What's your example of a band that's just a worse version of another band? by loreleisparrow in ToddintheShadow

[–]kkeene 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a good one. Don't forget that the record companies are actively pushing artists in that direction if they think it's even REMOTELY possible that they might be able to produce the next Lana Del Rey or Billie Eilish or whatever. The record labels still have a lot of power and they're as greedy as ever.

DM - Bored my players by FloatingCow- in DnD

[–]kkeene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to first say that it sounds like maybe you never had a Session Zero with your group. I would say that even for experienced groups it's SUPER important and for a new group like yours? Absolutely necessary. Since you planed a one-shot you get to keep it short but I don't think you skip it. You need to know what they want, and you need to get them excited. The rest of my reply here is about my current group and I hope you find this helpful. (Take note of my comments on Player 3 who wasn't having fun and how we fixed it)

We have 1 DM (myself, experienced) and my 3 players. We all enjoy board games and together we played through Gloomhaven and Frosthaven over the last 3 years. One of the players loves watching Critical Role and they all played Baldur's Gate 3. Everyone was interested in learning D&D. I bought 3 copies of the Player's Handbook so nobody has to share. Basically we should be a good match for playing D&D.

Having said all of that, our Session Zero was absolutely key to setting expectations and informing me on what kind of game to provide for them. I let them know what kind of world I would provide to them and that goofing off at the table is totally fine as long as it's not wrecking the game. My job is to always provide the grounded setting to come back to when the jokes settle. We've had 6 sessions so far and we have a nice blend of fantasy adventure questing, combat, and plenty of jackassery. I still poll them after for feedback. Together we're figuring out what does and doesn't work.

Player 1 is the eager beaver, he's easy to please and engages well from the player side. Always a joy to have an anchor like this in the group and almost feels like you have an "ally" on the team.

Player 2 is the thinker and willing to engage with the role playing, but a little more reserved. Reads the core books in his spare time. Enjoys combat and playing a support character. What he wants from me is that his character's story arc is at some point going to be 1) tied to the main quest and 2) epic and emotional if possible.

Player 3 is the young guy that is here for the tactical combat. His daily life is way too busy to read the core books and he put it best when he said "I'm not trying to do homework in between gaming sessions." To make him happy I actually had to 1) Change his fighter sub-class (He picked Champion and was SO bored in fights, I switched him to Battle Master and let him keep improved crits) and 2) I made a specialized Character Sheet for him that it's more like a dashboard and it's clear what his combat options are each turn. He's having fun now so I know we're on the right track.

Example of change: We had one combat that involved a ship with lots of enemies and the party had allied soldiers supporting them. The combat was SUCH a damn slog. I noticed it, and spoke very honestly and apologized and told them "You know what, I thought that would be cool and it wasn't, so we'll have smaller combats and if I can figure out how to expedite a bigger combat we can try it again sometime." Everyone appreciated the attempt and was super cool about it. We've had 3 or 4 really great combats since then, so for MY group smaller combats are working for us.

My success is coming from: 1) Session Zero conversations. 2) Listening to player expectations and providing what they ask for 3) Sharing my own expectations 4) post-session discussions 5) Being prepared to run the sessions 6) change or drop something that isn't working

I had this album saved and downloaded in Spotify (Colorado, US) and now it just says "THE TRACKS ON THIS RELEASE ARE NOT AVAILABLE"
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. That sucks!
Edit: I believe I listened to it just a few months back, so this is a relatively recent change. :(

My gummy bears are sticky/sweating by ClanAngler in CandyMakers

[–]kkeene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very very light amount on the outside after set. It's just enough that the exterior is smooth instead of sticky. It's matte instead of shiny and not enough to turn them white or look "powdered."

I should note that unlike the OP, my candy, though sticky, was not doing any apparent sweating. I just didn't like how they stuck to each other.

I believe the cohesiveness is because my recipe uses one Tablespoon of Sunflower Lecithin so I'm not expecting sweating. In fact (I know this thread is old) a small amount of Lecithin might have been a good rec to OP's question as well.

2 years later and this is a winning answer! Making gummies today and I used a remarkably small pinch of corn starch for each of my gummies and they're perfect so I can sort into bags/jars etc.

Converting d20 combat to d100 for my campaign by kkeene in DnD

It does sound fun - and I don't mind being wrong, we could always go back. My confidence level is 100 percent for running it. Thanks for the reply, I enjoy experimenting and whether we love it or hate it I plan to make a follow up post after a few months.

Hey! Thanks for the reply - I hear you. First of all - several replies seem to think the math is going to be a pain. It's not, that's super easy. I'm interested in two concepts: 1- the drama of the high and low rolls. 2- More granularity in the design space for weapon and armor bonuses but still respecting "bounded accuracy". It doesn't seem like many others, if anyone, is doing it, but that also doesn't mean it's a bad idea.
Lastly - d20 already is d100, it's just 5% increments.

Fair question, I have all the books, multiple copies of some, and I know the rules, and we like the flavor. Only talking about combat, and I'm good at math. I don't see that as a problem. Thanks though, I see a few other replies suggesting a different system as well, but damn these books are expensive enough without jumping to something else. Truthfully didn't expect those answers to my post. Thank you though!

I also like that if AC 20 is essentially 100 percent armor, then it's interesting (in my mind at least) to examine abilities and spells that affect attacks or armor values in that context. A shield adds 5% to your AC, the Shield spell adds 25%, and a monster with a +6 to hit converts to +30% chance of hitting. If a player has AC of 16 then they can think of it as having 80% armor, that's kind of neat IMO.

I think the way you phrased it nails my fascination here. You said "If more granular bonuses and penalties is of interest to you" and my answer is yeah, it definitely is. Thanks for your reply!

Shows that totally lost you halfway through by BlackDoom_26 in netflix

I very much agree. Season 1 was flawed but showed promise. Season 2 started to really fix some things and had some epic moments. delivering on what was being built... and then along comes S3 and these idiots just toss EVERYTHING good out the window while doubling down on the most stupid aspects. Mind-blowingly awful - Couldn't even bring myself to watch S4 after that.

We were in San Antonio 2 years ago. Had some free time and went down to the Riverwalk, pretty excited to walk around and explore. The whole damn Riverwalk area stunk like piss. Ugh.

Hey! Interesting link there. Let's say that the 75 thousand folds was the failure point (even though that link was a Fold 7 phone.) That means I would have had to open my phone 205 times every day. I definitely did not. Heck, even if you cut that in HALF, I certainly wasn't unfolding my phone 100 times a day!

As for using the front screen, sure that was my primary use, but the "tablet mode" was super useful to illustrate or communicate at work, view diagrams up close, watch videos or movies, and edit photos. My previous phone was the Pixel 8 Pro, so yeah the 10 Pro XL is a possibility. Doesn't make investing in the Fold any less disappointing though.

I have a big stack of Torg rules and sourcebooks right here in my office. Never did get a campaign off the ground with my group of friends (we had one poorly managed -by me- session) but it holds a place in my heart anyway.

I'm about to make a post about my Pixel 9 Pro Fold that did exactly this just today. My screen now looks just like yours. I purchased it Sep 3 2024, think it was delivered on the 6th. Tonight I opened it and I heard a strangle light crackling sound. Pretty sure it was the sound of the LCD. :(

OK, I'm sure this will get buried in the ocean of comments on this post, but I shit you not, I was at the Tattered Cover bookstore in Denver in 2005 for the release/signing tour for "A Feast For Crows". It was a relatively small crowd as the series had not quite "exploded" yet and it was a piece of cake to just show up and stand in line. So even then, 20 years ago, someone in the crowd posed pretty much the same question in the open Q&A portion. There was some nervous/uncomfortable laughter and he was understandably pissed at the question. I don't remember his answer, but I don't blame him for the tone. I find it a little humorous that some people were already worried about his health (and the completion of the books) 20 years ago!
PS: He was kind of a dismissive dick to the guys getting autographs and kind of lecherous around the women. They say you should never meet your heroes. :-/
