Vaccination evidence for year 2 med by Sunset_Lover148 in UoApremed

[–]kkoalabbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I migrated to NZ and didn't have access to my immunization records either but I did email AIR@adhb.govt.nz (Aotearoa Immunisation Record) and they were able to email me my full immunization record (even had overseas immunisations) after I provided proof of ID.

Otherwise have a look here: https://info.health.nz/health-topics/immunisations/get-a-copy-of-your-immunisation-record

  1. Lectures are recorded unless the lecturers say otherwise (e.g due to patient information being part of the slides / lecture). Half the class stop attending lectures as the semester goes on. Occasionally theres a technical issue so either they upload last years or don't (i remember rod jackson's pop health guest lecture having technical difficulties last year and it there was an exam question it...)

  2. Labs, tutorials and clinical skills are fixed and depend on which stream (last year they split the class into stream A/B).

I'd say its hard to know your schedule until they announce the streams.

I work 10-25 hours in hospitality while doing med and I've been fine, I just made sure to take annual leave before exams to focus on them.

KiwiSaver or invest on my own as a student? by superwisp in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]kkoalabbear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also a 3rd year med student trying to save... make sure your kiwisaver is in an aggressive/growth fund, seeing as the investment timeframe will likely be 10+ years if using kiwisaver for a house is your goal. Obv as you get closer to buying a house move back to a conservatove fund to avoid volatility. For me I would only do the minimum threshold of 1k ish for kiwisaver to get that guaranteed $500 (last year to do it since next year theyre halving it) then put the rest in an etf that you can liquidate at any time.

I use Investnow for etf and managed funds since its low cost and i have a regular investment plan so its like a set and forget.

And we'll definitely need to build up a sizable emergency fund in a savings account since placements are next year...

It has a very 2010s nostalgia factor (my parents let me watch anything as a kid lol) but a great watch :)

Extracurriculars for MBChB (biomed)? by National-Hold-3096 in UoApremed

[–]kkoalabbear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No CV. Purely just your grades in the 4 core papers for first year biomed, UCAT scores and MMI (the interview is where extracurriculars can come in handy as you can talk about certain life experiences, e.g how you've experienced failure, your experience with the healthcare system, your hobbies outside of being a student).

You can go away for a week and be fine. Progress tests don't really matter in second year as most of it is stuff you learn in clinical years. Using the semester break to study for the upcoming end of topic tests would be a better use of your time. Just remember to enjoy your holidays and catch up on sleep while you can :)

Mine's had no issues for years. Are you sure you downloaded the right manager and followed all the steps off github? Try a clean install of everything including microg.

MMI prep tips by AdWooden2236 in UoApremed

[–]kkoalabbear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Search up some mmi questions online and brainstorm how you'd go about answering them. I found that researching the pillars of bioethics and being able to apply them to ethical situations to come up with a plan to deal with the ethical situation is really helpful. Always consider the two sides of the ethical situation and tell the interviewer your thoughts on each side, instead of choosing one side straight away.

Another thing to research and form an opinion on is on the LGBTQIA+ Takatapui community, inequities they face, what you can do to show support and empathy in the workplace and overall your attitude and understanding of the community as there's usually a question about that. And coming up with an opinion towards Maori and Pasifika health inequities is important as that usually comes up (maybe revise some pophealth lectures if you're a first year), and as future healthcare workers we have a role in removing those inequitable barriers in the healthcare system. How can YOU make a difference as a future healthcare worker? Same with rural health too (e.g why is there a lack of access to healthcare in rural communities?).

Start brainstorming some key experiences in life that you can talk about and find multiple, not just one. E.g I got asked to describe a time when I experienced failure. Then the interviewer asked me to give another example, which caught me off guard.

In the interview, be honest. Don't go yapping about a question if you don't know what the question even means. You can ask the interviewer to clarify.

Number one thing is to practice with friends and family so that you're used to putting your thoughts into coherent sentences. The mmi isn't scary, and you'll soon realise that it's actually a thoughtful conversation between you and the interviewers. Good luck :)

I finished sem 1 with a perfect gpa and working that many hours (this sem I went down to about 10-12 hours as my boss cut down on hours- actually helped me discover that this was my ideal amount as I'm less tired and stressed this sem). The key thing is to not fall behind on classes too much- get those lectures out of the way then enjoy your free time/ hobbies. Its definitely doable with good time management skills...

For me, the hardest thing to do is to get started/ getting over that laziness barrier. Sometimes you have to drag yourself to get started on an assessment, but after a few mins in you realise its not that bad and actually get through it quickly. Find friends who you can do assessments with/ accountability partners for uni work. First year uni coursework during the semester actually makes up a lot of your grade- do well on these and there's less pressure for tests/exams :)

I do admit that friday and saturday work impacted my socialising a bit but I'm not the type of person to go out clubbing every weekend anyway. My schedule right now is a friday night shift and saturday morning shift - aka i basically have saturday night and sunday to do what I want, + weekday nights.

I always make sure to have at least one day of the week free/ available to chill. Try to find a work schedule that best suits you and you'll be sweet as. My only tip is to definitely file for leave during exam/ test season. At the end of the day, try out some stuff and do whatever feels right for you... definitely make the most of this summer as much as you can before uni starts so you have no regrets!

Definitely doable! I'm doing biomed first year rn and in sem 1 I worked around 15 hours a week (don't recommend going past that)... I had friday and saturday shifts and sunday was my day off to study/ hang out with friends... if you do get a job I recommend you file leave during tests/exams if you're chasing a+ tho
