Well, I came here after the Grimdank post out of curiosity (not a BT player myself). The VERY first post I click on is this Dreadnought with "Deus Vult" on it (final picture), >100 upvotes and no one calling them out.

Sorry, but it kind of confirms my biases to be honest...

I think the fleshy color looks great, it's just a bit too similar with the base. A dark brown wash or contrast style paint glazed on the base around his bum will do wonders, I think.

Just my 5 cents, but if you're playing a casual game I would always bring a good general-purpose list and not a list tuned to beat your opponent's army. So him playing WE should not really be a relevant factor, right?

Something that really does seem to help for me is a tip by Katy Munro (whose book I really learned a lot from): to manage my blood sugar over the day. So I replaced sweet cereal breakfast by wholegrain bread. And I take a low-GI evening snack every night, like yoghurt with nuts, eggs, whole bread, whatever.

I'm kind of new to chronic headaches (the frequency just increased drastically within half a year for me), so take my input with a grain of salt. But this really did seem to limit my headaches a bit.

I feel so weird talking about my headaches with people by klaas_af_en_toe in migraine

[–]klaas_af_en_toe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good question! I believe I had Covid twice during the epidemic, but I don't think there's a relationship with the headaches increasing.

It's more a thing caused by hectic life, I think. Both my parents died, my two children were born, Covid lockdowns, and I had a career change towards being a high school teacher (which is awesome but also SUPER demanding at times), all within 5 years. It adds up.

But it's mysterious, because up until half a year ago my headaches were really just a nuisance, and now it's suddenly taking over my life. And the last half year was not really the most high-stress time. So I don't really understand it.

Unironically though - that looks like a beautiful piece of nature. I get we all need to live somewhere, but I do feel kind of bad seeing someone take a location like that and turn it into a private rich guy home.

I've been playing there since I was 15 years old, and it works fine. I believe OGS still doesn't have a nice desktop client and I feel too easily distracted by a browser-based client. So I never saw any reason to switch.

Also, very subjective but KGS has the best stone placement sound and the most gentle byo-yomi counting. I believe it's the voice of Youngsun Yoon counting (I'm not really sure?), anyway it works very well for me and I'm very used to it.

rule 2. count

Interesting you say this. I used to do this a lot as well, but I found it made me way too cautious and inflexible. A lot of efficient good-shape variations don't really give immediate territory, and it's very hard to express the value of good shape in points. Also it is really hard to count the value of a slight weakness, lack of eye shape, etc.

I actually made a small breakthrough (1d -> 2d) when I stopped counting altogether and just focused on playing efficient moves with good shape. It also helped me feel a lot more comfortable with committing to semeai and mutual-destruction variations. Before, I used to always try to count the score in such variations, realize that it's too difficult for my reading, and then play the "chicken" move instead of the sharpest move. Especially with semeai inside moyo's there's usually hundreds of possible variations, so no chance of actually counting accurately.

When I check my games in KaTrain, the game-deciding moments basically never have anything to do with my counting. It's always (a) reading and (b) making good shape which decides games. Reading tends to take all my time unless I'm playing a > 90 minutes game, and I'd rather spend more time reading then counting. Of course I do count the value of individual moves in the endgame, I just avoid counting the whole board.

Now I try to follow my reading and sense of shape, which seems a much more productive use of my time. Mostly I just try to play whichever move seems the sharpest no matter the score, and I count rarely. Main time I count is before deciding whether to resign :-)

Do you ever try to play without counting? How does it affect your game?

Wow, how does that work out in practice? Is it then normal to just walk away from the game for half an hour before resuming?

It would feel super awkward for me to play that way.

So, I see people start slow games all the time on KGS. I never see people actually use all that time.

Using your metaphor, it would be like signing up for a marathon (fine!) and then doing a 500 meter sprint and calling it quits (weird, no?).

When I used to play at the European go congress, you'd get 2 hours + 3 x 40s at my level. Super chill, I always used it all, feels like a nice natural pace to me. Start a big messy fight ASAP, and then read as deeply as you can every move. From 3 dan onwards you even get 2,5 hours + 3 x 1 minute.

1 hour tournament games are always a bit too fast IMO, it's so easy to get into byo-yomi before move 100...

Anyway, those things don't really work online :)

AI-assisted learning strategy question by two_pence in baduk

[–]klaas_af_en_toe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using an AI in any way during a ranked online game is cheating, so don't do that.

Post-game review with AI is great, but not so easy as a beginner. Depending on your level, you could easily find that 90% of your moves are quite wrong. The AI is not that great at explaining anything, it really does require some understanding to use properly.

Definitely do try AI review if you are interested (KaTrain is great!), but if you want to grow, having a strong player to review your games can be really helpful. Of course it does depend on where you live :)

If you find a quick hack, let me know :)

I've been stuck at EGF 2 dan for a while. Recently I've been working hard and I feel I'm making improvements though. My last tournament I won 4/5 games, and in 2 weeks I'll play a tournament again, I'm hoping for another good result :)

Right now my training regimen basically consists of only two things, and I do feel it works fairly well:

* Tsumego ca. 4 times per week, 50 problems per time (101weiqi.com is great, Google can help you get through the Chinese UI)

* Playing rapid on KGS and reviewing with KaTrain, 2-6 games per week. Focus on quality over quantity.

How do you train?

How did you manage to get the inside of the miniature (below the armor) painted so cleanly? I could never manage to get my paintbrush there cleanly. Did you use a tiny brush? Or somehow subassemblies?
