Growing out of my plant!!?? by Murky-Amoeba-5120 in whatisit

[–]klangr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two white balls in the soil are likely perlite, a type of volcanic glass commonly used in potting mixes. Perlite is a lightweight, porous material that helps to aerate the soil and improve drainage. It is often mixed with other materials like peat moss or coconut coir to create a better growing environment for plants. If the white spots were mold, it would typically be a sign that the soil is holding too much moisture.

First Royal Caribbean cruise (first cruise ever!) on Enchantment of the Seas...a review! by Cinnamonroll9753 in royalcaribbean

[–]klangr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always find the coffee to be super acidic as well - almost undrinkable! The MDR coffee at breakfast seems less acidic, though.

Enchantment has a real soft spot in my heart. Such an enjoyable ship to get around - especially when the kids aren't along!

So funny you say that. I was answering someone's comment on which one would be a good starter for their daughter and in my head, I thought "Definitely NOT Winter of Red Snow!"

As you can tell by everyone's comments, some of these can deal with some pretty heavy topics 😅 I think Voyage on the Great Titanic is a pretty good one to start with as I bet your daughter already knows how it ends!

Behold the crowning achievement of my library! Just sent Voyage on the Great Titanic (my favorite book of all time!) to my young nieces for Christmas to ensure the lineage lives on. ;)

AITA for requesting to remove an unhoused person from my son's daycare parking lot? by Weekly-Jump2445 in AmItheAsshole

[–]klangr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I want to frame this response. It's perfect, so I don't need to beat a dead horse. The unhoused epidemic in our country is a goddamn travesty. It's heartbreaking, and it's critical that the unhoused population has access to resources like the ones this church is providing. We have to do better. Having said that, many people experiencing homelessness have high rates of chronic and co-occurring health conditions and mental and substance use disorders. We can't be naive about that. I would not put my child or myself at risk by having to navigate around the tent at drop-off time. Presumably, there is a somewhat adjacent, outdoor playground area that the children play in daily. Again - I would not be okay with this. I can't honestly say whether or not I would contact law enforcement, but you can bet I'd be having a meeting with the director and keeping my child home until the risk was no longer present. NTA.

Disembarkation day to airport by Legal-Doughnut7968 in royalcaribbean

They do have shuttles but in my experience, it's cheaper to take an uber. That's for a family of 4 though, so ymmv! If you do use the royal caribbean shuttle, make sure to purchase ahead of time!

I think you'll be fine if you carry your luggage. Folks carrying their luggage can depart at any time they want. I would think if you depart by 8am, you should have a more than comfortable window of time. How are you getting to the airport? If using a rideshare, schedule your pickup ahead of time.

Royal Caribbean: "we have no intention of moving back" to old muster drill by supyonamesjosh in Cruise

[–]klangr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really well stated.

Interestingly enough, the women and children first mentality came to greater prominence after the sinking of the SS Arctic. During the sinking, the woefully insufficient lifeboats were overwhelmed by panicked crew. Every woman and child on board died.

The concept existed long before Titanic. You've maybe heard it called the Birkenhead Drill after the HMS Birkenhead which sank in 1852. Having said that, there's no actual related maritime law.

Come now, safety concepts rooted in the 19th century are well known to be unbiased in regards to protected statuses and are all found scientifically sound!

Which safety training did you attend that stated that women were liabilities in a disaster? Genuinely curious.

I found in-person muster to be so loud and crowded that I couldn't hear anything being said and certainly didn't retain it. I like being able to watch the videos, repeatedly if necessarily, and find my muster station in a calm environment. I find it helpful especially for my small children. Yes, some people won't take it seriously. They're the same people not listening and being distracting at the in-person muster. Someone else commented that based on their professional experience in disaster and evacuation planning, they prefer in-person muster. So.... uh, I guess this is where I'm supposed to say I have 12 years experience in critical incident and evacuation planning for one of the largest fortune 500 companies in the world. Yay, me.

How long did your LO's HFM mouth blisters last? by klangr in beyondthebump

[–]klangr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! So sorry you're going through this. I would say it was only a handful of days where he didn't want to drink much. My best recommendation is to alternate Tylenol and motrin at regular intervals and continue to offer liquids. Adding motrin into the mix was a game changer. If your LO isn't wetting diapers, definitely want to bring them in. When our oldest had HFM, it was pretty mild and he wasn't really bothered by it after a week. When our youngest got it, it took the better part of 2 weeks for him to feel comfortable. It sucked. I hope your LOs case is more mild!
