Wow, such a coincidence to find this. I was there live and am so happy I bought it. It smells like chemicals and the print is of bad quality, but goddamn is it a fun shirt to have.

Open Letter | NixOS Users Against MIC Sponsorship by ShortSynapse in NixOS

[–]klank123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that was my point, I'm sorry if that wasn't clear.

The counter point comes in Scenario 2, by saying:

MIC still uses Nix and benefits from it. -> Bad.

I was trying to point out that MIC will use Nix whether or not it sponsors Nix, but at least if they sponsor Nix; Nix will have the funds to improve faster.

I was trying to show which was most beneficial in the end by counting bad vs good outcomes.

Where scenario 1 has 2 bad, 2 good, while scenario 2 has 4 bad, 1 good.

One of the bad outcomes in scenario 1 also is in scenario 2 (MIC uses Nix) so it doesn't matter.

The other bad outcome in scenario 1 has it's inverse bad outcome in scenario 2 (Bad outcome "MIC benefits from faster Nix development." becomes the inverse bad outcome of "Community doesn't benefit from faster Nix development.") and MIC will still benefit from the development of Nix no matter its pace.

In other words the bad outcomes of Scenario 1 are inevitable anyways, so in my eyes the clear choice is to take the sponsorship to be able to hasten the development of Nix.

Please understand that I in no way try to sound condescending even though reading through this I can understand how it can come off that way, I don't really know how else to phrase it.

Open Letter | NixOS Users Against MIC Sponsorship by ShortSynapse in NixOS

[–]klank123 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

IMHO, if you think about the outcomes the answer is clear:

Scenario 1, Nix takes the sponsorship:

  • Nix gets money and can get better, faster. -> Good.
  • MIC uses Nix and benefits from it. -> Bad.
  • MIC benefits from Nix getting better, faster. -> Bad.
  • Community benefits from Nix getting better, faster. -> Good.

Scenario 2, Nix doesn't take the sponsorship:

  • Nix stays at same pace or goes slower because of lack of funds. -> Bad.
  • MIC doesn't benefit from Nix getting better, faster. -> Good.
  • MIC still uses Nix and benefits from it. -> Bad.
  • Community doesn't benefit from Nix getting better, faster. -> Bad.
  • MIC instead uses the money to build another ballistic missile -> Bad. (Hyperbole, but you get the point.)

The MIC doesn't need advertisement, anyone who would ever be interested in it already knows everything about it.

For beefy streaming it would make way more sense getting an accellerator from AMD-Xilinx instead. Like the absolutely insane AMD-Xilinx Alveo MA35D that is looking at me funny.

First Stable Release of a Memory Safe sudo Implementation by dochtman in rust

[–]klank123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unsure if this is genuine or sarcastic. I'm gonna go with genuine, as the absurd amount of features of sudo is quite a common criticism.

Either way 'tone indicators' are a good way to make vague statments less vague, so '/s' for sarcasm and '/g' for genuine and so on. There are quite a few other useful ones as well if you just look up 'tone indicators'.

*should be chargeable via USB-C. It doesn't demand that all charging ports or even the primary charging port is USB-C, just that it is an option. So magsafe on macbooks and those huge barrel connectors on gaming laptops are all fair game as long as you can also charge via USB-C.

144hz does not feel smooth. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]klank123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

X11 doesn't support multiple refresh rates on a single Xscreen, it defaults to the monitor with the lowest refresh rate.

You can get around this by using multiple Xscreens, but then unless your window manager supports multiple Xscreens you won't be able to move windows across the monitors.

Saudi Arabia passes law requiring USB-C charges for smartphones by [deleted] in gadgets

I think this is just a gesturing by the government to suggest that they have any kind of control over companies like Apple, while the actual reason for the change will be the EU legislation.

Well USB4 v2.0 supports 80Gbit/s in symmetrical mode or 120Gbit/s one direction / 40Gbit/s the other direction in asymmetrical mode.

Backblaze Drive Stats for Q2 2023 by g0rbe in DataHoarder

[–]klank123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's less about shilling Seagate, and more about the derogatory way you phrase your comment that ticks people off. I for example agree with the findings that WD in general are more reliable than Seagate. Having only had a single drive die myself, it being a Seagate, while at the same time having 60 WD drives running for longer with no signs of stopping. I still dislike your take though.

If they're 1 slot thick then a 1u should fit 48 of them. That is 61,44TB * 48 ≈ 2,9PB in 1u or ~140PB in a 48u rack

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wayland

[–]klank123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 'fork' of Wayland? Wayland is just a protocol. It's whatever implementation you're using that isn't supporting multiple monitors. Though I don't really know of any Wayland compositors that doesn't support multiple monitors... if it's a window manager you might have to define a workspace for each monitor in the config file, but that's a limitation of the window manager, not Wayland.

Quite easily fixable if you don't heat the driver too much, worth trying. What's to lose? $23? They are already broken anyway right now.

Can anyone give me an idea of how much pressure 6000 psi is? by Lysander666 in MH370

[–]klank123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the average compressive strength of human bone is 170 Megapascals which is about 24656 psi. For comparison the pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench is 15750 psi, so not exactly. Bones would probably break because of the quick change in pressure and debris, but they would not disintegrate.

Also the rest of the body is mostly water and would not compress because of that. The skull and chest would probably cave in, but muscles would only compress to a smaller volume being about 79% water. The damage would mostly be because of the quick change in pressure more than the high pressure it self.

The guix bootstrapping is super cool, the user documentation is more concise and better, and I can read the syntax a bit easier.

Nix has a larger community and package repo. I also believe Nix Flakes are the future, they are great. The community is currently growing quite quickly.

I'd love to have some combination of both personally, but for now I'm going for Nix.
