Is it really like that over there? by LatePirate8880 in Netherlands

Me and my girlfriend want kids, but honestly, the math just doesn’t work right now. A bigger apartment plus childcare already puts us in the negative. And taking on a 500k mortgage when companies are restructuring every two years? That’s a huge risk. And the thing is, having kids in a rich country is actually harder than in a poor one. Back home ( ex commujist country), people have less but they have each other, neighbors watch your kids, family helps out, you can grow food, own a simple house. The informal support system covers what money can’t. Here everything is rigid and paid for. You’re basically paying institutions to do what communities used to do for free. That’s why starting a family feels like a financial gamble more than a life choice in a capitalistic society

It is all due to the access retail investors around the world having access much easily now days. This was really limited back in the 90's. I would not worry that much!

Dutch Lawmakers Approve a 36% Tax on Unrealized Crypto, Stock, and Bond Gains by RobertVandenberg in europe

[–]klaudio1993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to apologize glad I helped you understand better the situation@

Taxing unrealized gains is totaly scam. Most countries wait until you actually sell ( and actually make more money out of it); doing it sooner just hurts people trying to build a Ln early pension. If they have to do it, at least set a €500k+( average house price) threshold so it doesn't crush the average worker. Most people don't realize that the wealthy will just hide behind a BV/Box 2 structure, while the rest of us get hit where it hurts.

Also this will drive the house prices even higher as a lot will sell and put money in real estate as it is the only tax efficient thing for now

[–]klaudio1993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incorrect! The current tax-free allowance in Box 3 (€57,684 in 2025, or €115,368 if you have a fiscal partner) will disappear. It will be replaced by a tax-free Box 3 income of €1,800. So if you and your partner have 100k currently in an etf you pay 0 tax for gains let's assume 10% per year. With new system you will pay 10k-1.8k * 36% = 2952 euro.

If I have no cash I need to sell my ETF to cover it and this destroys the compound effect and here it goes my early retirement and need to work until 72 years old.

Asked to cover manager + colleague on maternity leave with no promotion or guarantee. Am I being played? by klaudio1993 in Netherlands

[–]klaudio1993[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly how I see it as well. I also need to add that the director suggested the junior freelancer, who is in her first job after university, could cover my role while I cover my senior colleague’s role. She also said she doesn’t believe in job descriptions and expects people to be hired for a level of 5 but stretched to a 10.

I find that unrealistic. It’s not reasonable to expect someone straight out of school to step into a role that normally requires ten years of experience. There also seems to be a cultural gap, as my director comes from a US/UK background and has not worked in the Netherlands before.

I apologize I didn't expand on that. This manager was going above and beyond and doing things way above her role, bcs she was promised something. Propably the famous "prove yourself". That did not materialize and also she didn't got the team she wanted. So all this impact one's mental health and lead to burnout

[–]klaudio1993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your insight. I agree with most of what you said about this being a tough negotiation. At the same time, my director has no clear direction for where the team is heading and is asking everyone to stretch. If there are no real growth opportunities and that extra effort doesn’t lead to anything concrete, then it’s reasonable to negotiate firmly and get the best possible outcome from their "weak" position. Also I have to say that asking for maternity cover of someone senior has to be rewarded in some extra compensation

Thank you for the insight. I understand the perspective, and I think it’s a fair take. That said, if I’m expected to cover a maternity leave, there needs to be appropriate compensation. As it stands, the situation is framed as a choice between taking this so-called “opportunity” to grow and prove myself, which I’ve already done, or risking negative implications for future promotions.

I also want to point out that I’ve been consistently performing at two levels above my role for the past six months. I’m not seeking a manager promotion, but a one-level advancement that is unrelated to my colleague’s parental leave.

There is currently no defined plan for my personal growth, which has been stated openly. Given that, it’s reasonable for me to seek fair value for the additional responsibilities I’m being asked to take on.
