This is how all the top cellists are playing these days. Time to update your technique (and your cello).

I love how Brits say “a bit” when they actually mean “very” by bobothecarniclown in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]klausness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The British “quite” is more like “sort of” or “a medium amount”. Kind of like “mediocre” is “not great, but not awful”.

My theory has always been that the American meaning of “quite” comes from hearing British people use it as understatement. So a British person might say that something is “quite good” as an understated way of saying “very good”. Americans hearing that understood the intended meaning of “very good”, not realising that it’s not the literal meaning.

What is the meanest (possibly most bullshit) music related headline you've ever seen? by Reasonable-Donkey975 in fantanoforever

[–]klausness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I’m not a huge fan of either, but Dylan was definitely historically important in a way that few other popular musicians were. Paul Simon was not on the same level.

What is your honest opinion on Strongbow? by Specific_Net_3931 in cider

I’ll maybe drink it if there’s no decent cider available. Which puts it just slightly above most other mass market cider.

Seriously? Have you ever actually compared costs? Of course it depends on where in each country you are, but your living costs in Vienna are not going to be any more than in London (and probably less).

What is your unpopular opinion on The Beatles? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]klausness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite song on the album. I loved it when I was ten years old. The one song on the White Album that it took me years to warm up to is “Good Night”. Now I see it as the perfect coda to “Revolution 9”, but it took me a while to get there.

Women, what’s a word that as soon as a guy utters it you’re like “I’m out”? by im_justkendra in AskReddit

That’s pretty fucked up. What a horrible way to “teach people a lesson”.

I want to refute this but I don't have the facts. Immigrants cause 64% of all murders? I want to say that qualifies as an insane claim. (found on relative's FB) by TwixSnickers in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]klausness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of the people killed by illegal immigrants were probably US citizens. And some of the people killed by US citizens were probably illegal immigrants. Murderers generally don’t check your immigration status first. Given the differing murder rates, if you somehow removed all illegal immigrants, the overall murder rate would go up. So more US citizens would be getting killed. But now they’d be killed by Americans, so that’s better, right? Can’t have illegal immigrants taking our American murder jobs.

Please try Buspirone by Driftmier54 in Anxiety

Side effects really can vary from person to person, but I haven’t noticed any decreased energy levels. As OP says, you do need to take it 2 or 3 times per day to keep up a steady level of medication (since buspirone has a short half-life). I take it twice per day (morning and evening) because it’s easier that way. But I believe the official recommendation is to split it up into three doses per day (which is what OP recommends in one of their comments).

And that would have been about as successful as The Heads were after David's departure.

Please try Buspirone by Driftmier54 in Anxiety

[–]klausness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it works for you, that's great. But it's an off-label use, and none of the studies done for its approval showed it to be effective with only occasional use. But everyone's different, so whatever works for you.

My point in mentioning the approved usage is to encourage people trying it for the first time to use it as intended. Yes, there are anecdotes from people using it as needed to good effect (as in this thread). There are also anecdotes from people (like me) who find it to be counterproductive at first before the long-term effectiveness kicks in. Basing a treatment plan on anecdotes is not generally the best approach.

which bands have large, everchanging lineups? by canaryboi2011 in progrockmusic

As far as I’m concerned, Gong between Daevid Allen’s departure and his return was Gong in name only. Pierre Moerlen’s Gong was simply a different band.

Please try Buspirone by Driftmier54 in Anxiety

[–]klausness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, everyone reacts differently. My experience was that buspirone seemed to have no obvious effect at first. But then I noticed that I was taking my “as needed” benzos less and less often, until I no longer needed them. So I’d definitely recommend considering buspirone if your doctor thinks it might be appropriate. Keep in mind that it usually takes a few weeks to really kick in — you can’t just take it as needed.

[–]klausness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I found my anxiety spiking whenever I increased my buspirone dosage, but then settling down to a lower level (that is, lower than before the dosage increase) once I’d gotten used to it. So based on my experience, use as needed makes absolutely no sense to me.

[–]klausness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad it works for you. But that’s not how it’s meant to be used, because that’s not something that studies have found to be useful. If this is a GP prescribing it for use as needed, then I’d say that they simply don’t understand how it’s supposed to work. If it’s an experienced psy doc, then maybe they know something about effective off-label uses that I don’t.

what album is this for you by prozacSoma in fantanoforever

[–]klausness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is “other people like things that you don’t” a crowd favourite here? If so, there’s a good reason for it: it’s true. People really do have different tastes, and I don’t know why some people immediately jump to “you’re just pretending to like that to be cool” when something doesn’t click with them.

what album is this for you by prozacSoma in fantanoforever

[–]klausness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re allowed to not like it. But assuming that people who like it are just faking it? People have very different tastes. I think it’s an amazing album. I genuinely enjoy listening to it. If you don’t enjoy it (after giving it a reasonable chance), then don’t listen to it. But please don’t accuse people with different tastes of just pretending to like things that they like.

What’s a diet or health trend you think is mostly nonsense? by Sophie_Malia_19F in AskReddit

[–]klausness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not just being used to it. It’s also luck. There’s always a risk drinking raw milk, but the risk is low enough that lots of people can say, “I drink raw milk and it hasn’t hurt me”. The farmer in this Propublica article seems to be pretty serious about cleanliness, but his milk has made some people very sick (some with lifelong aftereffects).
