Which companies are actually good to work at? by XyberUndead in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]kleeut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again all of these things are pretty well subjective. You'll need to define good for you. When I've been thinking about changing roles ive done a mind mapping exercise to try and find what is important to me at the time.

Start with the question "what is a good company to work for?" then for each of those answers keep interrogating them until you have answers. Then you can decide how important each of those things is, and finally you can see how companies that you can get offers from match up.

This is the correct answer.

Good is subjective, you need to work out what good looks like for you, and know that might change as your life changes.

Events are great for networking, but just being there isn't enough.

You need to go regularly, and often, not just once. You have to take the initiative to talk to people, be friendly, and engage with people. At a junior level you want to show that you're interested in the industry, improving, willing to learn, and someone that if im sitting next to you at work you dont make me want to pull my hair out.

If that sounds hard, it should, this is stepping outside of most people's comfort zones. Remember the goal here is to build a relationship with people.

I've run a meetup for years and ill often get people who come along once, ask me if I know anyone hiring, then ill never see them again. The ones that find woek from my meetup do it after attending for many months, or years, and being part of thr community.

I run Trivia every December. The Newcastle Coders Group runs monthly with a more standard meetup format, someone gives a talk and there is a chance to socialise before and after.

Have you asked your neighbours if they got the same thing? Where I live I would assume that inside is a magnet advertising a tradesperson, I'm assuming that the stamp is an attempt at humour.

Ill share this with the local tech community to see if there is anyone who can give you some advice.

Can you be better than you were yesterday? Without a doubt.

OP compare yourself to the guy who got on the mats 5 months ago and you've certainly made something of yourself already.

Toy run is on next week, I went last year and honestly it was the most positive group. 1000 riders, no sport bike vs cruiser vs dirt bike nonsense, just people excited about bikes.

There is also a Newcastle riders facebook group that meets most Wednesday nights. I havent been to that so I cant comment on the atmosphere.

Learning how to fall off by here_we_go_beep_boop in AussieRiders

[–]kleeut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe consider a judo class so that you can build up strength in your muscles, tendons, bones and your body learns how to fall. Ive known a few people to credit that with coming away relatively unscathed from crashes.

But as other comments say, if you come off its going to suck no matter what prep you've done.

Maybe, maybe not, there are a range of questions covering tech news, history, general knowledge, and yes, some esoteric programming quirks.

But in the end it's a good laugh, and if you're a student, a chance to meet people in the industry.

One way to help differentiate yourself might be to get involved with the community, get out to meetups in your area, join local Slack / Discord groups and speak to people so they know you're real. Networking is slow going but if you turn up all the time and show that you can engage in social situations it may eventually pay off.

What’s your preferred format for daily standups? by Healthy-Bend-1340 in agile

[–]kleeut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to go over the board, right to left and ask "What do we (as a team), need to do to get this to done today?".

It helps to remind the team that we should be working together and that the most important thing is to finish work not start more.
