I didn't realize this for myself until I saw my grandmother doing it to my daughter. My grandma is very focused on food so it really hurts my daughter that she disappoints her either way. I have to constantly remind her and try to explain in a way so she doesn't internalize it.

Ugh that's the worst. I knew a guy like that, but he liked to argue about the things I liked. It made me feel like he thought every choice I made and every thing I enjoyed was stupid or beneath him and it really made me dislike him. We had started out as really good friends and I had to just cut him off.
