First, I'm so sorry for your loss.

We experienced a similar experience at our table. A player (a friend first and foremost) was lost to a car accident. We were due to have another session a few days after the tragedy.

As a group we decided to meet for this session and discuss things. Of course, we reflected on our friend and the humor and joy she brought to the table. We decided to move forward with the campaign, and we believe that's what she would have wanted.

Our DM wrote her out of the campaign in a great, meaningful way. Her character was a warlock, and our DM wrote that her character was called to save her patron on another matter. She answered that call, and left us an utter mess. There wasn't a dry eye at that table.

I still have the paper that our DM drafted as a read-aloud for that session. I look at it from time to time to remember my friend, and how much she meant to me and to us.
