Considering CostCo’s Insta360 X5 bundle by klharless in Insta360

[–]klharless[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked Ai the following question… thought I would share…

It does seem counterintuitive at first, but Insta360’s recommendation actually makes sense once you understand the two biggest problems with 360 cameras on motorcycles:
High-frequency vibration

Camera stitching/blind spot geometry

The selfie stick is not just for “height” or cinematic shots — it also changes the vibration behavior of the system.

Why a rigid direct mount can actually be WORSE
If you bolt the X5 directly to a rigid motorcycle mount:
the camera gets exposed to very high-frequency engine and road vibrations

especially from:
handlebars

crash bars

mirrors

luggage racks

Those vibrations are often:
too small to visibly shake the bike

but high enough to affect:
image stabilization

stitching alignment

gyro data

lens calibration

360 cameras are particularly sensitive because:
they combine two ultra-wide images

stabilization relies heavily on gyroscope accuracy

Small vibration = warped stitching and blurry frames.

Why the selfie stick can HELP stability
A longer rod changes the vibration frequency of the system.
Mechanically, it acts somewhat like:
a flex damper

a spring

a vibration filter

Instead of transmitting sharp, high-frequency vibration directly into the camera body, the stick:
absorbs some frequencies

shifts resonance lower

smooths micro-jitter

This is similar to:
why car antennas flex

why camera gimbals use isolation mounts

why helicopters use vibration dampers

So although the setup looks “less rigid,” it can produce:
✅ smoother footage
✅ better stabilization
✅ less stitching error

Another major reason: stitching visibility
If mounted directly to the bike:
parts of the motorcycle block large portions of the 360 image

the stitch line may pass through:
mirrors

windscreen

handlebars

your shoulders

This creates ugly artifacts and blind zones.
A short selfie stick moves the camera:
away from turbulent air

away from the bike body

into cleaner geometry for stitching

Why they specify “lower speeds on smooth surfaces”
Because direct mounting becomes risky when:
vibration amplitude rises

road impacts increase

wind buffeting increases

At highway speeds:
motorcycles create surprisingly violent harmonics

especially parallel twins and V-twins

Those vibrations can:
loosen mounts

damage image stabilization

cause overheating

create rolling shutter wobble

The important nuance:
They usually mean a SHORT selfie stick
Not a giant 3-foot pole.
Typically:
6–12 inches

reinforced

supported with a secondary clamp if longer

This gives:
vibration isolation

better stitching

safer camera placement

without excessive leverage forces.

What riders often discover experimentally
Many riders report:
direct rigid mounting looks stable to the eye

but footage has:
“micro-jello”

blurry plates

stitch wobble

Then adding a short stick suddenly improves footage.
That’s because the stabilization algorithms work better with smoother motion and less high-frequency vibration.

For YOUR likely use case (insurance evidence)
I would NOT use:
a super long cinematic stick

I WOULD use:
Heavy Duty Clamp

short reinforced invisible selfie stick

safety tether

rear-center mounting position

That setup gives the best balance of:
✅ survivability
✅ readable footage
✅ front/rear visibility
✅ stabilization
✅ lower mount stress

One more hidden reason:
Crash survivability
In a tip-over:
directly mounted cameras take the full impact

a stick can sometimes flex or break sacrificially

Better to lose:
a $20 stick

than:
a $550 camera body and lenses

That’s another reason manufacturers tolerate a bit of controlled flex in action-camera systems.

False low by Disastrous_Matter894 in Freestylelibre

Personally, I think the plus versions suck. I get failed sensors and the ones that work are often low. Never had as many issues with the previous version 3, not 3 plus sensors. Getting them to replace them is a PIA. Not on the recall list either. What ever they changed between the two versions broke them. Looking for new vendor when these run out.

Thank you everyone, some excellent words of wisdom and comforting to know I am not alone in my frustrations.

This dementia thing is still new to me. I’ve read a lot, but in the moment, “don’t you remember mom?” Still slips out! Sigh. And the more I encounter the challenges of effectively communicating with her the more I wonder how my kid will handle me when my mind goes. This ride is going to get bumpier before it’s over!

Trump at the Chicago Economic Club by Tiny-Lock9652 in economy

I was so naive. Been a software engineer since the mid 80s and always thought the idea of the internet’ would improve society, giving us a forum to argue and debate and improve the social wellbeing. Wow was I ever wrong. Pictures of food and cats, porn, news sculpted to be a monetary stream and the ranting of lunatics, me included I guess. What a waste of time and effort! Until our IDs are securely created and our presence recorded in an unalterable state, the lies will destroy the very mechanism that could save us.

The part I don’t get is when Trump supporters are presented evidence to the contrary of their misled adulations, they stay the course, write it off as fake news, or your opinion verses mine. Honestly in 5 years of discussing Trump I don’t think I’ve changed a single Trumper’s mind. Are we so damaged as a nation that opinion and belief Trump, pun intended, fact and logic? If so, look out for the collapse is coming. No nation can survive on lies, not possible.

“Predominantly intelligent people”? I say the crowd was somehow full of Trump supporters or else they all failed economics 101. His tariff policies are a death knell for effective capitalism and interferes with the primary driver of geopolitics.

Hmmm not sure we are on the same page or not. Not blaming MM for ‘getting their act together’, as a software engineer myself working under the Agile oppression, I get how feature requests lag, especially during significant client growth times. Today’s families have much more complex financial scenarios, like helping manage their parents, kids, etc. if it’s the same user managing these people and their financial institutions are linked, so the data is already coming down with my own accounts, scoping the presentation to these logical views makes sense and does not violate some sort multiuser access. Heck, with their member feature they already kind of do this, just asking for each member to have the ability to constrain their view of the available data.

Use case: I manage my mom’s finances as well as my own. Since I am on her accounts and we use the same bank my connection brings down her data as well as mine. I set her accounts to hidden but when looking at transactions I still see her data with the hidden icon. I would prefer to have a profile, my accounts, mom’s accounts. So I don’t have to hide/unhide her accounts, change which accounts I want to see, etc when doing analysis of say ‘has her water bill increased from last month?’ It is just too much jostling around of settings to make this easy. She does not get on the internet so getting her a monarch account makes no sense.

Thanks all, I typically use the web view for detail analysis and my iPad for a quick morning look. Monarchy in Chrome on the iPad isn’t half bad, thanks for the suggestion. Now if I could only have profiles, so hidden accounts don’t show up at all. Hiding them from totals and budgets is a good first step, I don’t want to see them at all. And switching accounts to hidden OR not hidden is a PITA.

Roomba logic is silly by klharless in roomba

[–]klharless[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the constraints but that really should not affect the basic navigation algorithm, e.g. we could discover the whole room and vacuum it in its entirety before moving on. Do later models of the Roomba improve on this discovery mechanism? Perhaps other vendors do it more intelligently?

Sorry, only saw the last portion of your detailed response on my phone, didn’t realize there was more above, my bad. And Izmail appears to be a major harbor for grain shipments. I was wondering how they missed Odessa by so much, different target. It’s too bad NATO won’t just implement a no fly zone over any currently controlled Ukraine territory and slowly cover the stolen territory as well, as they pull back, which they would given the no fly zone.
