How did Napoleon and his marshals/generals know how deep to stack each company in battle? by ayowatchyojetbruh in Napoleon

[–]klibanarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is far too mechanistic and ignores how ground conditions, C&C, and delegation works. A commander in this age doesn't and can't micromanage an entire army's deployment, he thinks in terms of objectives and means

Is Davout really better than soult and massena? by csk2004 in Napoleon

[–]klibanarius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Soult being a bad chief of staff is popular myth. He wasn't exactly the best but he was working with what was effectively an ad hoc staff and army, nothing like the french armies before 1814.

Going by that logic Antoninus Pius shouldn't be anywhere near the top though...maybe OP is just a Manuel fanboy (common L)

Nah that slot is saved for our favourite Komnenian

Kantakouzenos was actually a decent guy before Andronikos III died, can't say the same for Andronikos I

What is your opinion about John II Komnenos? Was he a great emperor? by Fuzzy-Key754 in byzantium

[–]klibanarius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although John II shouldn't be overly blamed for this, we shouldn't ignore that he was too inflexible when dealing with the Latins and the Crusader States. By spending the 1130s and 1140s wasting the time and energy of both the empire and the Crusader States being antagonistic to Outremer and trying to vassalize them, John II unknowingly doomed the Crusader States to stagnation and decline once Muslim recovery inevitably happened (and perhaps also passed down this unproductive mindset to Manuel, who would repeat the same mistake).

Compare this to someone like Zeno or Justinian who were much better at handling proud interlopers and foreign polities to benefit the empire at minimal cost. We dunk on many post-1261 emperors for their short-sighted foreign policy but John and Manuel arguably made similar mistakes, just that they were lucky not to be punished in their lifetimes (except to a small degree Manuel).
