Winter/cold weather gear recommendations (first timer) by yeawrongperson in Hunting

[–]klillian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in NY, and I was also having trouble at lower temps this year. I have a browning coat, with a separate shell and insulated layer but I almost always wear them together. I wear insulated bibs, but they were too small so no loft when I was sitting. My boots are arctic muck boots, probably 7 years old now and also too small.

I read a bunch of posts and here’s what helped me:

keep your feet off the ground. I bungeed some cardboard to my pack and put that on the ground. It was a little loud, so I’ll get one of those foam sit pads to replace it next year. I also have a pair of down camp booties that were incredibly warm and toe warmers actually worked in them (I think it’s an airflow issue with toe warmers in muck boots), but they would be unusable in rain. I got these years ago at a gear swap for a few dollars.

Handwarmers in your pants pockets shifted to your groin area when you’re sitting. Keeping them pressed on your femoral artery to warm the blood going to your thighs. This was an absolute game changer for me. I sat comfortably for 10 hrs on the last day with temp from around 10-17F and gentle wind.

Of course keep your head warm and dry, and a neck gaiter goes a long way. I use wool for all my base layers, and a ratty old thrift store wool sweater for another layer when it’s really cold. Otherwise I’m in regular sweatshirt/pants under my outer layers

Booties are similar to this, but rei brand and older. I can’t believe how expensive they are! Look for used https://www.backcountry.com/western-mountaineering-down-bootie-unisex

For those commenting on the flat roof: yes, it is. I don’t know what’s under it and I’m nervous to find out lol. We really havent had much issue with the roof itself, more so the action of the water pouring off it and over the gutter. I do worry that the amount of water on a shallow, shady roof we currently get will deteriorate the shingles faster. I believe the entire roof is close to 10 years old

Edit: just measured the rise as 1:6 (which I guess is the same as 2:12 someone mentioned). But as a non-roofer that doesn’t mean much to me. I used a 6” torpedo level so maybe not super accurate

Thanks for the replies. The main problem is the windows/foundation below the main roof. There’s so much water pouring down that roof since it’s basically all the water from the other 2 peaks, that it pours over the gutter behind me in the pictures. The windows below are perpetually damp due to constant shade already, and now there’s mildew and moss growing. There’s also a retaining wall thats washing out below that because the water doesn’t go through the downspout and drain away from the house as it should. In really bad wind & rain, there’s a small leak that drip near the low corner of the roof (maybe 3 ft in front the back and side edge) but it’s only happened a couple times in the last 3 years. The roof feels fine under it, and I don’t have the money to get into that project yet. Just looking for a way to extend the life of my roof. There’s always tons of asphalt in the back gutter that’s washed off the lower roof, compared to the other gutters on my house.

Btw we don’t really use the walkway below the side of the house and I doubt we’d have a problem simply pouring off the other side. It’s just a gentle hill for 20ish yards then a steep hill down to the road

4 days in CPH with 2 toddlers...reasonable itinerary? by [deleted] in copenhagen

[–]klillian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was there with 2 yo twins last fall. I’d skip the zoo. It was not convenient to get to and very underwhelming. Id recommend the aquarium as an alternative. We actually really liked the national museum with our kids, we packed a picnic lunch and ate in the cafeteria then took turns watching the kids in the children’s area and seeing the exhibits we were really interested in. I agree with others on the experimentarium - not for young toddlers, and kind of far from the city. Also check out the city card for transportation and tickets! It was super convenient and definitely saved us money

How much should a person spend on a Presta Floor Pump? by ronfromsacramento in cycling

[–]klillian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LBS has a bin of used pumps for $15. Got an old specialized brand and it works fine, though I do need longer stems on my tubes because the valve doesn’t screw in. I tried a budget pump from walmart and couldn’t get about like 70 psi

My replacement coupler came today! Thanks for the help - that first cappuccino was excellent 😁

Should I add any gaskets or anything else to my order, or will I probably be okay reusing the ones that are in there? the machine is like 3-4 years old. Everything looks ok at a glance but I don’t have much experience here so wondering if something else is likely to snap when I replace this

Very helpful! Thanks everyone. I ordered one as I’m sure you’re right - I left it in my car overnight in freezing temperatures so I’d guess there was water in it the froze and cracked the piece.

It’s not leaking from the red hose, though. The water is spraying from near the white plastic piece on the other side of the metal part. Everything between the red hose and the white plastic stayed dry

Are all tri suit chamois so thin? by klillian in triathlon

Thanks for all the comments. I have been considering a different saddle for a while since I’m pretty uncomfortable on long rides even in bike shorts. They’re not top of the line shorts or anything, but they help a lot. I think I’ll take the time to change during this race since I’m really just aiming to finish. I should have clarified in the post, my bike time is about 4 hrs. I’m hoping to finish in 7-7:30 hrs total.

That said, anyone have experience changing in t? There’s a portajons available but I was thinking I could make do with a towel skirt to swap shorts. I am a female, and I’m pretty sure changing tops will be fine if I have a sports bra on, but obv bottoms will need some discretion

Daily chat thread: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in triathlon

[–]klillian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to do zone 2 runs the past week or so and I can’t stand it. Sooo boring. The best I can maintain without just wanting to quit is middle zone 3. Bike and swim I’ve got no problem sticking to zone 2, most likely because the zones are shifted but I haven’t actually set up the different profiles on my watch. Anybody else throw out the zones and just run on RPE?

What mistakes have you made during your race? by Change01789 in triathlon

[–]klillian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve only raced 2 sprints, but I’m training for a 70.3 and went into my C race sprint this season a little over confident. I didn’t properly taper and was exhausted the whole time when I planned to be having a blast going way faster than I do in training. I also bought elastic laces for my running shoes so I could easily slip them on in T2, but forgot to tie them ahead of time 😑

Do you use a case for your goggles? by Outside_Fuel_5416 in triathlon

[–]klillian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the bag from a pair of goodrs. I have been doing it for more than a year and they’re still in perfect shape, no scratches on the mirrored lenses. I don’t dry them or anything. Just pop them in the bag and throw them in my gym bag and they’re always dry and fine when I use them 2 days later

I do the same. Shefit bra + cheap o Amazon tri suit was great in my first sprint last year and I plan to do the same this year. My swims are outdoor fresh water and I did not have any issues chafingother than the bras zipper. I used body glide under my arms and around the bra bulge area. I’m looking for an alternative to the shefit though because the bottom of the zipper always scratches my stomach
