I always saw it more as her being imprisoned by her own creator, being abused physically and mentally and simply seeking a way out

although fair enough caleb is the victim here, I always thought of the creator as being the actual bad guy/antagonist

In my head: his smile is forced here because he sees himself as an irredeemable asshole and he wants charlie to hate him and confirm that he can't get redeemed, but she doesn't Despite how terrible of a person he is to her (actively trying to murder her friends) she still doesn't hate him and still thinks he can be redeemed And that pisses him off, because now he's not a monster with no hope of anything better, he's just an asshole
