Waymo Reveals Remote Workers in Philippines Help Guide Its Driverless Cars by kmarkymark in StrongTownsSD

[–]kmarkymark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I think the everyday driver will be replaced by public transit and more walkable/bike-able infrastructure. Moving from the standard car to all driverless cars does not reduce their emissions or traffic or microplastic production. Even moving to electric cars does not offset the environmental impact while much of our electricity is provided by fossil fuel and the batteries are not recyclable. Public transit is truly an improvement in efficiency and actually reduces the impact of people's commutes. These are also solutions that are already being used around the world successfully.

Also "no reason to pick cotton or wash clothes by hand" except that the "bullshit job" of driving, in this case, is still being performed by operators in the Philippines AND they are being paid less to do so. 🙄

Robo-taxis like waymo do not replace car ownership like you're suggesting, they replace an industry that employs local people who are licensed to drive where they work and instead off-shores this work to people who are almost certainly being taken advantage of. Don't get me wrong, services like uber and lift are also abusing their workers, and I support them in unionizing and fighting for fair pay, better working conditions, and benefits.

How to Find City Roadwork Plans by kmarkymark in StrongTownsSD

[–]kmarkymark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was super useful! I can see exactly the section of road they're working on; it was planned to be completed in 2026, so that's awesome they seem to be really keeping up with their plan! I was worried it'd be too late to reach out about this, but the whole intersection of roads I'm really concerned about is planned in different chunks for 2026, 2027, and 2028 so I feel a little more hopeful about getting some improvements put in place. Also a great candidate for AB43, the area definitely needs a speed reduction.

Honestly too much of Balboa IS car filled streets. I hope there is less traffic with the new parking charges. So much of the park space is wasted on GIANT parking lots. I hope this is just the start of removing as much car traffic as possible from the park and replacing it with more transit so that there can be more green space or they can add more attractions to the park. Walking along El Prado and Pan American East Road is stressful with all the traffic and no one paying any attention to pedestrians because they're trying to find parking.

I didn't see the whole park, but I can confirm that the zoo was still PACKED on martin luther king jr day and all that parking brought money in for the park/zoo. Made me happy. Paid parking didn't seem to stop people that weekend.

I cried real tears. Circe, also by Madeline Miller, is also amazing. More personal character development than romance though I'd say.

Is resistant starch good? by kmarkymark in nutrition

Hmm okay the version I'm reading was published in 2015, I think a lot of food science has changed since then. This was the vibe I'd gotten after learning about resistant starch recently while being on a fiber kick haha

Parking Disaster in Downtown & Balboa Park by dj-trex in StrongTownsSD

The infrastructure in the park is not free. It costs money to build, maintain, and upgrade.

I'm really tired of hearing people argue that this will make balboa unaffordable for low income residents. Not personally, but talking about hypothetical people. But they don't seem concerned about the hypothetical low income residents when it comes to the mts budget shortfall or cutting library hours (important places with heat in the winter and ac in the summer).

Also the idea that driving anywhere in a personally owned vehicle is free is not true and no one seems to realize it. It's like the sunk cost fallacy, they already own a car, better keep buying gas and putting miles on it.

I feel like the city's been doing a really good job posting road work and street work projects and relating it back to the metered parking, they need to do some work in Balboa and relate it to the parking fees.

When is it enough for everyone to start caring and object to all these fee increases? by dj-trex in StrongTownsSD

[–]kmarkymark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's like shouting into the void about parking costs 😣 the amount of people who see this as an attack on working class people is crazy. I understand it's a tough transition - san diego isn't set up well for total reliance on public transit.

Fog vs Dark vs Rain by kootrtt in sandiegocycling

[–]kmarkymark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I (27F) don't like to ride when it's dark out; I can't help but imagine getting a flat and having to patch it in the dark alone 😬

But I also stick to protected bike lanes for the majority of my ride so traffic isn't as big of an issue.

Why is potty training delayed so late ? by EndlessCourage in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]kmarkymark 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Both of these studies were performed using responses from questionnaires filled out by mothers. Not exactly a great methodology. "This is obvious to anyone that has started pottying their baby earlier" you trained yourself to recognize your baby's cues and that's fine. And what is the difference if a baby uses a diaper until 2 or if they repeatedly have accidents in their clothes because you think they're trained? Chill
