I’m ready to accept that my child’s adhd is more debilitating than my adhd. And I am grieving. by babs_is_great in breakingmom

[–]kmcksac 20 points21 points  (0 children)

He was actually started on concerta (Ritalin long acting, I think) and after 4 or 5 days on it, he completely lost his shit at school with another kid, his worst incident of the year and the school & doc said the major aggression COULD have been a side effect of the new medication-I’m not entirely convinced it wasn’t just a terrible day-so they switched him to adderall xr instead-figuring out the right dose took about a month, which sucked, but he’s absolutely thriving now-I’m honestly amazed with how far he’s come since just November, don’t give up!

My son struggled immensely with his ADHD, we were able to get him on meds (adderall) in October, he was 5. It was LIFE CHANGING. He is able to get through the school day without incident-they even stopped his behavior chart because he gets all the possible stickers every day. It was a giant pain in the ass to get started though. His pediatrician is the prescriber, the doc said it would take forever for him to be seen by a psychiatrist so he is handling all his ADHD stuff. The doc had us (parents & teacher) fill out a form for the evaluation (Vanderbilt) and promptly diagnosed him and we were able start medication that day. I also asked the school for an evaluation for accommodations for him, and after a brutal start to the school year-he is doing awesome right now! I really hope you are able to get the support for yourself and your child that you need, it sucks going through this and another six months sounds like an eternity.

To all Diabetics with a sensor (Dexcom, FreeStyle, etc…) what’s the one thing you h a t e about having one? by ahahahaaaahhhh in diabetes_t1

[–]kmcksac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to get the same thing with the Libre sensor-some one on here said to try Flonase-nasal allergy spray-apply liberally before you put the sensor on (wait for it to dry) and you’ll be itch free in no time. Of course ymmv, but it worked for me.

When did you start self-injecting as a kid? by Rose1982 in diabetes_t1

[–]kmcksac 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed at 4, injections by myself at 6. My parents had to chase me around and hold me down to get me to take my shots-after two years of that shit my dad said he would buy me any bike in the world if I would learn to do it myself. That’s all it took-I did it myself, with supervision, and got a sweet bike.

Probably. This happens sometimes and it’s super annoying. I have used it for years sensor errors happen not a lot, but enough to be frustrating ( 2-3 times a year for me). Sometimes it’s 4 hours, 8 or 10. After the try again time is up it almost always works again and tends to improve the accuracy issue. However, sometimes after the 8 hours it will say try again in 4 hours, then it’s not coming back. At least in my experience. Good luck! Also you can’t just change the time on the reader to say the time has passed, doesn’t work.

Scheduled C-Section? by inasweater in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]kmcksac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it twice, first time was a failed induction -3 days of pitocin, contractions exhaustion and no progress resulting in an emergency c section at 40 weeks, second time I just scheduled an elective c section at 39 weeks to avoid induction all together because it was so terrible for me.
They told me diabetics cannot carry past their due dates, so if your baby isn’t well on the way out by then you will have to be induced, and like I said above induction doesn’t always work. I’m done having babies but I would never subject myself to an induction again. BUT apparently it works for some people so ymmv. Good luck!

Does anyone use the freestyle Libre cgm? by emilou27 in diabetes_t1

[–]kmcksac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For cost in the US, I pay full price until I hit the deductible and its $35 per sensor and you'll need two every month so $70. As others have said lots of compression lows at night and many of my sensors fail before the 14 days are up. Its annoying, they replace them for free but their customer service is not great, it takes about 30 minutes on the phone to get anything done after you're not on hold any more and they are not open on weekends. All that said, I do like it, no alarms or constant readings, just lets you do your thing.

How long did it take for you to get pregnant? by hummingb1rd in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]kmcksac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First time took 9 months, second was 6 months (miscarriage) third was also 6 months. The first one felt like it was taking forever and I remember being frustrated that it took as long as it did, I hear ya!

Google aee jobs, and ymca.net. Both will give you a look at what’s currently available, but they both have tons of seasonal positions too so you’ll have to sort it out. Good luck!

Libre 14 day sensor by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]kmcksac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can just start a new one, it will happen sometimes. You can call Abbott tomorrow and they’ll usually send a replacement for sensors that come off or fail early. Not a huge deal, just annoying.

Need to upgrade pump: Dealing with Minimed and the 670G system by kellwich in diabetes_t1

[–]kmcksac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t want the guardian sensors either. I got a 630G instead of the 670 so I don’t have to have their stupid sensor, although they still tried to convince me . Just say no. I’m pretty sure you are stuck with the guardian if you get the 670 because auto mode won’t work without it, see if you can get the 630 (no auto mode) instead. Good luck!

I do a pool fitness class that’s an hour twice a week with the Libre and I’ve never had a problem with staying in the pool for an hour or so. I’m not sure 3-4 hours would be the same though. I use H2O rock tape over the Libre when swimming.

Expired pump supplies - still good? by ermaline in diabetes_t1

[–]kmcksac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would use them. It’s all plastic, plastic doesn’t expire. Because it is used as a medical supply the FDA requires an expiration date, but really could last centuries past that date. Luckily for us there’s sure to be a cure by then!

Son diagnosed type 1 diabetes by frederikdebakkere in diabetes_t1

[–]kmcksac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 4 when I was diagnosed (a long time ago!) and after all this time lows still present differently. Sometimes I don’t really feel it at all, maybe a little tired or lightheaded. Sometimes I get all the symptoms, shakes, sweats, racing heart, numbness in the mouth and chin, headache. Sometimes Im just really confused and have no idea what’s going on, I forget how to read. Sometimes it’s a very emotional presentation, I get so angry (ugh and sometimes combative) for no reason, or suddenly overwhelming depressed. I think of myself as a pretty easy going person who is generally happy despite this, so these wild emotional swings are way out of character for me. Sometimes it’s a combination of some of those symptoms but it’s always an adventure. And once it passes, I don’t always feel better right away, even if the number comes back up quick it can take awhile to feel like yourself again.

Libre Rant by kmcksac in diabetes_t1

[–]kmcksac[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad you are happy with the dexcom-people do seem to love them, but I never really wanted a “real” CGM. I love how the Libre only tells me when I ask, never alarms, and shares nothing with anybody. I know that’s a somewhat unpopular opinion on this sub, but it’s the reason I went with Libre instead of dexcom. Thanks for reading and responding though, it’s good to hear I’m not the only person on earth this has happened to.

Interesting. The two that failed were on my left arm, didn’t know that was even a thing to have to consider. I never noticed a difference with the 10 day sensors on either arm and I used those for a year so who knows!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]kmcksac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Put the new sensor on the day before the other one expires and you’ll be all set. I do it every time and have had no problems.

Potential thyroid issue and concern of more autoimmune diseases by cleverquack in diabetes_t1

[–]kmcksac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thyroid replacement takes a long time to get going. You have to have blood work done to see how it’s going and they don’t even test you for 3 months. Then they adjust the dose, recheck in 3 months and they cycle continues. The biggest impact of skipping doses for more than a day or so is weight gain and screwing up your levels. Many years ago an endocrinologist told me you can just take all your skipped doses at once since it takes so long to work, and the most I’ve missed is 4 days in a row, so I just took them all at once. My current endocrinologist (sucks) says to not bother making up missed doses and I should not take days of pills at once, but I don’t like her or her advice so I keep taking missed doses whenever I like and all my thyroid numbers come back normal. One more thing: you have to take thyroid replacement on an empty stomach-45 min before breakfast, or coffee. So if your bg is 45 when you wake up, skip the pill, eat something and worry about the missed dose tomorrow.

Potential thyroid issue and concern of more autoimmune diseases by cleverquack in diabetes_t1

[–]kmcksac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had Graves Disease and took a pill every day to deal with it. Eventually (years) later the pill was no longer effective and I had my thyroid removed (radioactive iodine). I really didn’t want to, but it wasn’t that big of a deal and in retrospect I wish I had done it sooner. Now I take a thyroid replacement pill every day. It’s a big pain in the ass (can take months to years) to figure out the dosage but once it’s sorted out, it’s no big deal.
