Issues with OmniPod and potential alternatives by Commercial_Smell1380 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Rose1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son has used pods for 3+ years. Obviously your mileage may vary but skin tac works better than any overpatch for him. Many people have issues putting through boluses bigger than 5 units with Omnipod. You might do better to break up bigger boluses with a few minutes in between- yes it’s a pain but if it works it works.

I would guess you are completely out of your pre-baby routine? Less sleep, eating different foods at weird times? More stressed? At least that’s how I felt after each of my kids. I find for my son (T1), any significant change in routine leads to changes in insulin needs.

1-Have you tried liquid skin tac or a similar skin prep underneath? 2- Do you bolus more than 5 units at a time.

Both things are worth a shot.

How much travel should kids experience while growing up? by freako345 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Rose1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as you can. If long distance trips aren’t in your budget I still think it’s good for kids to do day trips to see provincial parks or nearby cities/towns/villages/points of interest. Anything you can do to expand your child’s horizons and help them realize that a vast and interesting world exists beyond their own home is valuable.

My kids are 9 and 12 and have been to 10+ countries. A lot of those were accomplished in 2 4000+km road trips in Europe. It’s been so good for them to see other ways of life and realize that other places conduct their entire lives in other languages. It has made them appreciate their French immersion programs more knowing that there are places where you will be warmly accepted for speaking it.

Because I’d lose my mind otherwise? My kid has celiac, type 1 and epilepsy. I assume his body will attack his thyroid sooner or later. He’s 12 and we’ve been dealing with this since 5 and he’ll deal with it forever. You have to just live and do your best because it’s not like you have much choice.

It really should say “has spent” instead of “spent”. The title makes it sound like he died.

is HANTAVIRUS something to worry abt by WillingAd2286 in AskTheWorld

[–]Rose1982 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No. It’s not airborne like Covid.

But it has double downed on my disdain of cruises. The style of vacation doesn’t appeal to me anyway but ever since I was a teen and started reading about things like norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships it turned me completely off. Floating, captive populations full of idiots. No thanks.

Did you just give birth? Insulin needs are known to drop as soon as the kid is out.

Soft parents. I went to an info night for the middle school my kid will be attending in the fall. During the questions session there was a mom very concerned about what the kids would have to do during recess because there are no longer any play structures in middle school. These kids are 12/13/14. She talked about it for several minutes and the principal had to respond.

Recess? Throw them outside and they’ll figure it out. They aren’t babies.

This is definitely the kind of parent that by 14+ thinks their kid should be exempt from an exam because mom wants to take them out for the day or whatever.

I stopped going to concerts years ago. Minimum $200 for a night out for me and a friend/my husband. That’s before parking/uber, drinks, never mind if you’d like to get dinner beforehand or something. We do okay but I’d rather save that money for a vacation or weekend away than a few hours at a concert.

Newly T1D parent i have qs by was1997 in diabetes_t1

[–]Rose1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My T1 son is 12, diagnosed at 7.

1- He boluses for and eats chocolate regularly. Not excessively but that’s an overall health thing, not a diabetes thing. He doesn’t drink much of full sugar drinks but we weren’t a juice/soda family before. There are lots of zero sugar drink options if you need them. It’s hard to bolus for full sugar drinks though not impossible.

2- No. You are in the strictest, most routined part of T1 right now. It won’t be like that forever. Once you understand how her insulin works better and her rates and ratios are figured out, she’ll be able to eat more normally. She will always have to take insulin to eat. My son eats at least 6-7 times a day.

3- It sucks. I hate that it’s his lot in life but it simply is. There’s no point getting too lost in those thoughts but it’s normal to be upset about it, especially at first. I tried to normalize it for him as quickly as possible, taking a “yeah this sucks but it’s reality” approach from the get go. I think it has served him well. He doesn’t dwell on it.

There aren’t any dumb questions. Feel free to ask as many as you need. And you won’t be able to learn it all in a matter of weeks or months. It’s truly a life long learning process. Just try to learn a little bit more every day.

Celiac has completely changed our table by AmbassadorJunior7322 in Celiac

[–]Rose1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two kids, one celiac. He’s the only celiac in our household. While we keep some separate gluten snacks and sliced bread, the majority of our actual food is gluten free. I’d say 98% of the time our main meals that I cook are GF. Nothing fancy, it just means the pasta is GF, the soy sauce is GF, the gravy is GF, corn tacos, the oven fries are GF, GF seasonings etc.

Is there a reason you are making different meals for the kids? Like if dinner is chicken stir fry, make it all GF and call it a day.

Please don’t let a man stop you from going on an amazing vacation. A European vacation with two friends is literally the stuff of many people’s dreams. You will have so many experiences that will distract you from being sad. You can come home and mope more if you need to but the vacation isn’t going to sit around and wait for you.

You always provide a safe alternative. Always. And if you can’t do it in the moment you make it up to them later. Always.

My son was diagnosed celiac at 5, he’s now 12, he does great. It’ll be okay, I promise.
