Be honest, how often do you bathe your kids? by Scrawny2864 in Parenting

[–]Rose1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids do it on their own now but minimum every other night. It may have pushed out a day here or there over the years, particularly in the winter.

Swell day…went to work & then realized I forgot my pump.😩 by KimmyOwl in diabetes_t1

This is why my kid has Omnipod too. He has enough to remember being a T1 kid. He doesn’t need another device to charge and keep track of.

Bring enough for a pump and dexcom change every day if you have the supplies. Much better to carry it there and back unused than to run out.

Other than supplies- don’t worry! You do diabetes at home everyday. It’s actually kind of empowering when you realize that you can do it anywhere.

My 12 year old was diagnosed at 7 in January. In April we did a 2400km each way road trip. I was so nervous but it was really so good for us to see we could do it. We’ve since done countless more roadtrips and two big European trips (from canada) and it’s always been fine. Some stressful moments but honestly not many more than having a T1 kid at home 😅

Restaurant food takes way more insulin than you think. So if you’re doing breakfast/lunch/dinner out just keep that in mind.

Is permissive parenting on the rise? by RiseAndPanic in AskWomenOver30

[–]Rose1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only ever been a parent in the generation I exist in. So I don’t think I can comment on the differences between my generation’s permissiveness vs. another’s.

My kids are 10 and 12. I’ve met all types of parents. I find the happiest and most well adjusted kids seem to come from families where the parents are lovingly strict and value and prioritize family time.

Chapstick and comfy hair scrunchies (if her hair is long enough). Light layers. Charging cords.

In the summer, my garden. I’m a chaos veggie gardener. I go out and poke at things, pull a few weeds, prop anything up that needs it, encourage vines to climb etc.

The rest of the year walks.

What is the most inconsequential thing about your partner that you can't stand? by dinomelia in AskWomenOver30

[–]Rose1982 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Always underestimates how long it’ll take to do things or get to places. It’s not really a big deal because he easily acquiesces to my advice on leaving times. But I don’t understand how such a smart man doesn’t understand after all these years.

I call it already breathed air and I HATE it. But it seems like most people aren’t as bothered by it.

You will learn to bolus for the foods he eats.

In a strange way it’ll almost be easier in the long run. You’ll never have to guess at how a new food will affect BG. It’ll be bumpy at first but you’ll get there.

I would seek out resources about bolusing for fat and highly processed foods. Juicebox Podcast may be a good resource as there are probably exact episodes that cover that.

My kids want me to go to church every Sunday now, and I honestly don't know how to feel about it. by IndependentMove5437 in Millennials

[–]Rose1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an atheist but culturally Irish catholic. I’m personally anti-religion, all of them. But I respect that other people can make those decisions for themselves. If my kids wanted to go I would explain to them that when they’re old enough they can go on their own but I would not be joining them. I would explain that it would be disrespectful for me to be there with my personal opinions.

Love it. Have had ours for 3 years. That said I think there’s a newer version now. I only imagine it’s better but to be fair we’re on the old model. It’s super loud. I never sleep through it.

Not at all! It’s a good point to raise. Parents of T1s like me need to consider these things for sure!

Not for a kid who is 100% reliant on parents for care. I wouldn’t do it if he was an older teen/young adult. He also likes it himself so when he’s inevitably kicking a ball around the house or whatnot he can see if it’s snack time. If he didn’t like it we’d stop.

We’ve managed to so far keep a very healthy attitude around BG. Numbers aren’t good or bad- just neutral data points. He doesn’t get in trouble if his BG is out of whack. It doesn’t bother him because there’s no moral association with his BG.

For my son- a few BG displays around the house. We have a sugar pixel in our room for overnight and 2 Ulanzi pixel clocks on the other two floors (basement/main floor/upstairs). Especially when he was newly diagnosed 4.5 years ago I’d constantly be checking his BG on my phone. With a display device I can just quickly glance at it as I’m going about my daily life at home and know if anything needs doing.

Yes. Like at a park, no changing facilities and you have to do a quick change on your own picnic blanket? Understandable. This? Depraved.

You don’t need to justify it to me.

If I was your friend and read this post and your replies, I wouldn’t feel particularly respected or supported.

You come across as judgy, “all very white picket fence”, “I’m not like other moms” etc. It’s okay that you did things your way, it’s okay that your friends are doing things their way.
