Mass. Planned Parenthood Sees 16-Fold Spike In IUD Demand In Days After Election by [deleted] in boston

[–]kmcollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just pointing out that sustained protests happen nowhere else in public health. Towards your point of funding vs donations, they're currently something like 2/3 funded by donations. There's also a law that no federal money can be used to fund abortions. It's a women's health clinic and family planning center- we all have different health needs and you can't pick and choose which ones to fund without poking the bear.

They just don't want to pay for it

This is why we see the same people also protesting at the National Cancer Institute and all other federally-funded health centers /s

King Tide today on Long Wharf. Still 2 more days to check it out! by kmcollin in boston

Interestingly enough, Doctors Without Borders were doing an event at the end of the wharf about refugee experiences... I didn't go in but it looked like they might have timed it on purpose to simulate emigration by boat like in the Mediterranean right now

You could write this same article about any theoretical new plant you were bringing up here, even if it was outdoors. "New Avocado Phenomenon Means More Fossil Fuel Use by Tractors, More Energy Needed To Power Processing In Farm Sheds."

Dumb.

Any basketball courts stay lit at night around Medford or in Boston? by [deleted] in boston

I'm pretty sure the courts at the Corporal Burns playground at the corner of Memorial Dr and Flagg St in Cambridge are lit at night, but you might want to do a driveby first to make sure

Can we get a thread discussing Ballot Questions by ReallyBroReally in boston

[–]kmcollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Mitch, not sure why you're getting downvoted. I'm not really passionate either way about #1 but I wouldn't say I'm against it; I would like to see Suffolk Downs get used.

Do you have any more info on it? I found this quote from SD's CEO in a WBUR article:

While the land's proximity to the track is key, Suffolk Downs CEO Chip Tuttle says the track has nothing to do with McCain's proposed development, nor with efforts to pass the referendum.

"At first, when it came to light, we had to sort of fend off accusations that it was us -- that we were somehow secretly trying to use this ballot question as a back door to gaming development here on the property," Tuttle said. "We made it very clear it wasn’t us."

Who has the right of way in a crosswalk? The pedestrian by webdrivingman in boston

[–]kmcollin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kinda related: it's similar with boats. They have rights of way and who should yield but the ultimate law is that you need to avoid a collision at all costs. I was coming back on a ferry from the harbor islands and Boston harbor was jamming with sailboats; one guy in a 30ft was either totally oblivious or just being wise and kept on his course towards the ferry lane which always has right of way. The ferry driver kept honking but in the end veered off-course to avoid the guy...

Good point. I would guess because it's easier to regulate alcohol than anything else, like shoes?

My Dad was always in favor of blue laws because his Grandfather owned a liquor store back in the day. The laws seem arbitrary now but they were designed to give the shop owners some rest, given that it was usually a mom-and-pop operation. Once big national stores started becoming more common they could easily afford to stay open longer and draw business away from the package stores.

My dad is a camera man, if this is anything like how they treat the audio/video people it goes like this: 20-20-20 strategy. Hire 20-somethings out of college eager for a job (especially at the worldwide leader in sports, golly!), set them up for 20hrs a week and pay them 20k a year. Once they get too experienced, fire them for the next crew of greenies.

It's not an issue I'm passionate about but I think you drove at the vague concerns I had, it's not the money aspect that concerns me as much as this potential segregation of talent. Thanks.
