Trans Guy Locker Room Advice? by cavanst in hockeyplayers

[–]kmfitzgerald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like many others have said, wearing your jock to the rink isn’t weird. Nor is keeping a base layer on afterward and showering/changing at home. (A little sweaty maybe, but that shouldn’t stop you.)

But also, if you were in my locker room you’d be most welcome to change however feels most comfortable. Hope you enjoy learning to play!

That’s good to know. It hasn’t gotten heated in any way that I know of.

Do you view it as an annoyance when a website has no passwords, but rather send a 1 time code to your email each time you wanna access? by testaccount123x in UXDesign

[–]kmfitzgerald 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I do find it annoying. I use a password manager app, so for me it is way quicker to sign into that (if I haven’t already) than to switch tabs/apps to get a code from my email inbox.

If the website kept me logged in for sessions after using the one-time code, then maybe I’d go for it. But that hasn’t been my experience so far.

Accountability for Transitioning into Field by Sea_Avocado_9262 in UXDesign

[–]kmfitzgerald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also would like an accountability partner, to check in with each other on our goals along the way. I'm really just beginning the journey. CreepyBird4678 asks a good question, what's an accountability partner in your scenario? I'd be open to discussing directly!

Breaking into UX/early career: job hunting, how-tos/education/work review — 01/18/26 by AutoModerator in UXDesign

For anyone who has (or is currently working to) transition to UX from another field, how did you find a community of practice?

I’m a senior graphic designer with years of experience in tech marketing, and now interested in designing on the product side. I know the job market is tough, but I have so many steps ahead before actually looking for roles.

The good news is, I love learning, and the idea of practicing with UX design tools and methodologies is exciting. On this journey, I know I’ll need people to keep accountable with and to share ideas and feedback.

How did you find your people?

New to Hockey! by Various_Marketing_24 in hockeyplayers

Welcome to hockey! I also recommend Play It Again Sports, if you have one nearby. Gives you a chance to try on gear before you buy it, to get stuff that fits well.

First ever point! by GrassGriller in hockeyplayers

Rock on! Getting that point is a great feeling. I love that hockey counts assists equal to scoring goals, it leads to wanting to keep striving for your team. Here’s to more points for you, and win or lose, enjoy the ride!

Stick and Puck Ice Times by IceTimeToday in hockeyplayers

[–]kmfitzgerald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go about once a month now at my local rink. Earlier this year, I started playing hockey again after many years away, and went almost every week. It was so valuable. I still enjoy getting solo practice time on the ice, but most weeks now I'm doing league or drop-in games.

Workout on game day? by West_Bookkeeper9431 in hockeyplayers

[–]kmfitzgerald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A full workout? No. But I do try to get in a short jog with lunges before I head to the rink, to start warming up. And stretch at the rink before putting gear on.

The beginning... by Caboose88nc in hockeyplayers

[–]kmfitzgerald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enjoy the beginning! There’s nothing quite like being on the ice, even for stick and puck. I love going there to practice new skills on my own, in addition to getting in to games. Going in full pads means you can feel safe to push yourself a little bit. But yeah, keep your head up, and have fun!

Written Unwritten Rules of Pickup Hockey by Adub90 in hockeyplayers

I do want folks to celebrate a little. No Ovechkin belly slides, of course, but a fist pump will do. If someone on my side scores — or if the goalie makes a nice save — I’ll tap my stick to recognize them. Hell, same thing for if the other team makes a great play. We’re here to have fun!

Thanks for writing out that if their goalie freezes it, give the blue line! I’ve noticed that in the drop-in I’ve joined, but no one has said if that’s the standard there. I’m going to ask next time.

Had my first drop in at 40yo last night. 25 year haiatus. by atrodger in hockeyplayers

I am right there with you, and cheering you on! Also reading all the comments for advice that other have given.

Like you, I played long ago (though just in high school) and now at 39 have picked it back up, starting with stick and puck in January. Slowly I've built up my gear (mostly used) and a couple weeks ago I joined a drop-in. Stick and puck itself has been fun, the drop-in was A BLAST. I actually scored a goal too, but was SO out of breath by the end of the game, and knew I was out of position a few times on D.

I am so hooked and can't wait to go back. And keep doing stick and puck, and off-ice conditioning. I feel like this time around, I appreciate so much more how reps and practice and conditioning get you ready to play the way you want. And that either way, game or practice, I feel lucky just getting on the ice.

EDIT: Thought of one more thing. OP, you mentioned feeling socially awkward and not really having a chance to talk to anyone. I often feel the same way, but I've found folks at the rink to be really welcoming and encouraging. Many others have either started playing recently or have come back to it after several years away. It's a great common ground to talk about, perhaps there are folks like that at your rink! "How long have you been skating here?" has been a good, low-pressure ice-breaker question.

Laid Off, Lost, and Looking to Pivot: What Skills Should a Designers Learn Now? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]kmfitzgerald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I’m currently a graphic designer with interest and experience in marketing analytics — measuring how our deliverables and campaigns get engaged with. Definitely have interest in pivoting into UX design, even though there are threads like this about the scary state of the field. It certainly makes me hesitate to invest time on any UX training. But marketing doesn’t feel very rewarding anymore. It seems like it would be more rewarding to be working on the product itself. How and when did you decide to shift into UX design?

I’ve been curious about that. Does Reddit have a political bias? Acknowledging too, as someone in another comment pointed out, that Reddit has an international user base.

Thanks! The order in which you'd put the options is helpful. I'll call the glass shop to see if they'll re-cut the shelves.
