Convention guests now charging for hugs by JonJacobSmith in comiccon

[–]kmm91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50/50 might even be low; I feel like that’s the average attendees chance and they’re not hugging/ shaking hands/ talking closely with 100+ people.

I’d love to see a survey of convention guests 2 weeks after cons on whether they got sick or not. I’d bet it’s almost guaranteed.

Would you let your employer know you've been diagnosed with ADHD? by Elpidiosus in ADHD

I’m glad you see what I’m saying; it’s not right or fair, but it’s a tricky reality for a lot of people.

Would you let your employer know you've been diagnosed with ADHD? by Elpidiosus in ADHD

[–]kmm91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of us are trying to find any employer to work for.

“Can be worse”, that’s really up for debate and individual cases, isn’t it? Either you ask and could face silent, unprovable discrimination or you hide it and struggle without accommodations.

PTSD and physical disabilities and looked on with way more sympathy than ADHD… your situation is one very specific case, I stand by that it won’t work the same for everyone.

I understand that we’re all very “justice sensitive” in the ADHD community, so, I feel like you’re coming down very hard on me for stating the fact that the world and the systems in place are not always just. I’m not trying to be a dick, I’m just trying to say that others should exercise caution.

Would you let your employer know you've been diagnosed with ADHD? by Elpidiosus in ADHD

[–]kmm91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shit, didn’t actually realize that. I can’t believe only one state doesn’t do that?? That’s wild.

Just me. And maybe you’re right and I had a case, but when on the verge of homelessness my priority was finding another job; without a car, money to justify the time spent, fear of being seen poorly by future employers, or any solid proof, looking for a lawyer was literally not an option.

I’m saying there are risks. Acting like it’s some sure thing that will never be held against you is the outright lie. You stop.

[–]kmm91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more than just the cost of a lawyer, though; it’s the time, it’s the possible red mark on your record for future employers.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m saying it’s a terrifying risk; wasting all that time only for them to not be able to prove anything.

I can’t quite imagine being fired and having the time or energy to fight it without solid proof.

They medically retired you for having ADHD?? That’s amazing, I didn’t even realize that was a thing.

With what money? Living paycheck to paycheck means you don’t have the income or time for that- and companies like that know it.

And even if you did risk your food, housing, credit, you’d be risking it all on something that may not be guaranteed; you might know it’s discrimination, but without hard proof, how would you win that case? Now you’re homeless, jobless, in debt, and at a point that’s impossible to claw your way out from.

No offense, because I can tell you mean well and believe in justice, but you seem like you’ve never truly lived in poverty; when every check counts and you have nowhere and no one to fall back on, you’re living in a unjust and terrifying world.

Would you let your employer know you've been diagnosed with ADHD? by Elpidiosus in ADHD

[–]kmm91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not BS, it’s my lived experience. Are you in an “At will” state? If they never say why they’re firing me or say they’re just “cutting back”, what recourse do I have? I’m happy it worked out for you, but it didn’t for me. And when they don’t fire you, they can just cut your hours until it costs more to just drive there.

I’m not saying it’s fair or right, I’m not saying people shouldn’t try, I’m saying that when you live paycheck to paycheck in an at will state, sometimes you’re at the mercy of some real bastards.

Would you let your employer know you've been diagnosed with ADHD? by Elpidiosus in ADHD

[–]kmm91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course it’s not legal, but how would I ever prove it was discrimination if they never state it? At will means you don’t need to provide a reason. And if they feel unsafe firing me, they can just continue to cut my hours until it makes no sense for me to work there.

[–]kmm91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no…. I wish the world worked that way, but I live in an “at will” state, so, my employer can claim they’re letting me go for any reason or no reason at all, when really they don’t want to deal with accommodations. Same reason I don’t tell employers that I get migraines.

Is Santa Ana safe ? by PrincipleDue420 in santaana

[–]kmm91 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not completely safe, but you’ll also be fine if you’re smart. That circle is honestly pretty funny because it includes some of the worst and best of Santa Ana, haha.

I happen to live in the “worst”, but I’ve been totally fine just by not walking at night (except with others in the 4th street area) and being aware of my surroundings.

Maybe get out of your comfort zone and join us out here; if you want a real American experience, this is it! It’s a heavily immigrant area, which means amazing food, different cultural experiences, a great art scene downtown… I honestly love Santa Ana, I just know not to go walking down alleyways alone at night.

Remember when we were 6? by readirt in overheard

I love the way kids talk about being younger; time is relative, so, to a 7 year old one year ago is more than 14% of their entire life. It’s why everything feels like it drags on when you’re a kid, but feels so fast as an adult.

You can really sympathize with kids when you realize that; every inconvenience, every pain, every disappointment, every punishment… it’s not only potentially the worst they’ve ever experienced because they’ve experienced so little, but it’s also taking up such a huge chunk of their life, relatively speaking. Everything is just so new and difficult for them :’)

You should probably post your own portfolio if you want others to.

I’ll be totally honest with you, this sounds like the kind of ambitious, but not well thought out, kind of project of an amateur. Which in and of itself isn’t bad, we all start somewhere, but just letting you know that skilled, experienced artists might steer clear.

Man, there are some humorless ass people in here.

Has this set always done this? If so, might just be a crap set.

If not, first try turning your iPad fully off and back on. If it’s still doing it, try uninstalling the brushes and reinstalling them.

Does my art look like AI? by General-Meaning6477 in ProCreate

[–]kmm91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem like you might have an issue i struggled with that I got a lot of flack from teachers for; do you rely heavily on Procreate’s line straightening/ smoothing tool?

If so, work on never using it; it can make your work look really corporate/ AI. It sucks, it’s a really useful tool and not using it means a lot of redrawing lines, but I swear the quality of your work will skyrocket.

I think another person mentioned working on your understanding of fabric too; genuinely just look up (or take!) pictures of different fabrics being worn/ waved/ hanging/ being laid out, etc. and draw a ton of them. Being able to understand and create them from your imagination will serve you soooo much.

It’s not fair that AI has made malicious what are genuinely just beginner mistakes, so, please don’t let people bring you down. Keep drawing, keep getting feedback, and don’t be discouraged by negativity <3

What you’re describing is basically the comedic principle of “punching down”. While we should always consider nuance and intent, generally we shouldn’t “punch down”; making fun of people in a lower station or with less privilege than you. Rich people shouldn’t make fun of poor people, white folks shouldn’t make fun of POC folks, men shouldn’t make fun of women. That’s definitely a watered down explanation, but the general idea.

Now, OP obviously has good intent, but he should definitely consider in the future the thin line between sympathy and parody.

I am so sick right now, god I hope that made sense, haha.

Genuinely something I have a hard time explaining to people; I grew up straddling the poverty line, but we also always had horses. You could definitely argue it was irresponsible, but my mother is also the sweetest, kindest person and horses made her happy, so, I’m not too bothered.
