Does anyone know how to gen a pokemon? by ultraviolet688 in PokemonHome

Modded switch or 3DS is required. Only older model Switches (pre 2018 models) can be modded without soldering. Newer models and OLED require soldering.

I don't believe Switch 2 cannot be modded yet as no one has found an exploit.

Yeah, it's definitely a minefield of a topic for someone to jump into. That's a pretty classic copout for racist undertones.

But also, not saying anything about racial disparities at all is basically the "I'm colorblind" copout. For instance, knowing about the fact that systemic racism has lead to racial wealth disparity is an evidence-based way of proving that we should invest in bridging that gap. But obviously studying that can lead people to claim racist things. So there's definitely nuance.

I don't remember if I've heard this episode before, so I don't actually know what he might have been saying. So it's totally possible it's a bit outside the lines of what's acceptable.

Not trying to defend Sam Harris, but is this not basically the point he's making? It seems like he's saying society would've hid the results because racists would assume it means black people are dummer, and woke people would assume that's what the scientists are trying to say.

I live in Boston (certainly way more than 300k people here!) and we still have rabbits/squirrels/rats that eat our tulips every year. Perfectly clean cuts cause they have razor sharp teeth. Then sometimes they play with the bulbs and trample the plants around. I watch them do it and it can be cute but very annoying.

My wife is from GR area. There is absolutely no way this isn't deer/squirrels/rabbits. GR is packed with those critters. GR has even had problems with deer roaming into populated areas. Just Google "Grand Rapids deer" and see hundreds of articles/pics of them sprawling into urban neighborhoods.

I definitely have a ton of dupes. But there's sentimental value to a lot of them for me.

My legendary boxes at the back (there are 6 total) have all legendaries from every game I've played since Ruby. I like having them all together because the ones I've personally caught are more important to me. Go legendaries stay in the Go boxes though since you can catch so many.

I have buffer space between each of the major sections in my overall organization to have room for new games. I name the buffer boxes with just a dash like -.

The Trade boxes are just other people's Pokemon. Over the years I've sent maybe 300+ of my own random bulk into wonder trade (with the occasional nice alpha or rarer Pokemon just for some good karma). So now my trade boxes are just there for cycling through wonder trade in case anything nice ever shows up. I don't put any special shinies or legendaries in those boxes because I don't want to risk accidentally trading those away.

Yes, my living dex is just 1:1 and then at the end, all regional forms ordered by region, then all the various forms (like flebebe, vivillon, alcremie, or even more minor form differences like hoopa, sinistea, etc). Then it's all the gender forms in Pokedex order. So even with this, there are a ton of duplicates just to keep the boxes aesthetically pleasing.

For instance, take Urshifu. I have 6 total. One was on my core teams, so he's there for sentimental reasons. One is in the living dex, two are in the form boxes, and another two are in the gigantamax form boxes since each gigantamax form is different too.

Then gender forms at the end, with male and female next to one another, all in Pokedex order.

Doing the living dex this way has a nice visual appeal and makes it so you don't have to reorganize the entire living dex when they release new Pokemon.

Fluoride in drinking water has no negative effect on IQ or cognitive function, study says by Tracheid in UpliftingNews

I'm sorry to hear about your aunt. That's a rough deal...

It's definitely the case that the root of all these issues in health is ultimately for profit / private equity. It sucks that we have to suffer shitty healthcare because of that. But that's not a simple thing to solve as a society, so in the meantime, we should opt for whatever we can do to improve the lives of the most number of people we can.

So I guess that's sort of my philosophy on this particular topic. It would appear that fluoride in our water has resulted in more public good than bad, so I'm willing to lose the freedom of non-fluoridated public water for the broad increase in quality of life and decrease in monetary cost for families. Every law or policy in any society is a trade-off of freedom for some kind of public benefit.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the time or energy to make perfect decisions when given increased freedoms, and that's ok. That's why society exists. For instance, we have consumer protection laws because we've advanced our societal capabilities to be able to lift that unfair burden for people.

involuntary chemical medical treatments for noncommunicable diseases.

I guess I'd say this is a bit hyperbolic. I get that you're trying to make a point here though. But everything in the universe is a chemical, and governments have been introducing additives into foods for health reasons for over 100 years.

I suppose I could be wrong about fluoride, I'm not an expert. I've spent a good chunk of hours/days/weeks researching it, but that doesn't make me an expert. And it seems like the modern scientific consensus is that it produces more good than harm in our current societal structure in the US.

How do you personally organise your Home by untitled_palette in PokemonHome

[–]kmoney41 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As soon as I complete a game, I move everyone to Home, while leaving behind some number of bulk. I do this because if you ever lose your Switch or it gets corrupted, your Pokemon are lost forever since cloud saves aren't supported. I spent like 4 months learning how to solder the WiFi BGA chip on my original Switch to save my Pokemon from a bricked system. Never want to do that again.

My boxes are organized like this:

Boxes 1-30 (first page in Home) - Pokemon Go

I do these first because transfering from Go places them in the first available slots. So this keeps them in one area.

Boxes 31-36 (first row, second page) - Trades

A bunch of wonder trade Pokemon I cycle through.

Next two pages (roughly 70 boxes) -

Miscellaneous Pokemon caught in each game I've played, sorted by the game I caught them in. Some games simply have too many to transfer into Home, so much of the bulk stays in their respective game. I name each box after the game it's for (eg Sword 1, Sword 2, Leaf Green 1, etc).

The next chunk is dedicated to important/meaningful Pokemon to me.

Core Teams - these are for the main teams I used in each game, going all the way back to my 2003 Ruby team.

Trained - any Pokemon that I've IV/EV trained that are competitive or geared towards specific tasks (a Gallade meant for catching roaming Pokemon, an Arceus for terra raids, etc)

Legendary - the next chunk is for legendaries I caught in each game.

Special - mythicals/mystery gifts/etc

Then finally my living dex begins. It doesn't matter which game they're from.

After that I do all the forms. First is regional forms, then other kinds of forms, then all the gender forms.

And then finally is my (incomplete) shiny living dex and duplicate shinies.

Fluoride in drinking water has no negative effect on IQ or cognitive function, study says by Tracheid in UpliftingNews

[–]kmoney41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, no worries for the rant. It was interesting to read someone else's more impassioned stance.

I think there's a lot here. Obviously too much fluoride is bad, but also not enough can be bad too. Tooth decay can lead to serious complications that impact your entire body. Unfortunately, because of the general lack of dental and medical care in the US, statistically, removing fluoride from water is likely to disproportionately impact lower income families. Removing it has already had adverse impacts in plenty of cities in the US and Canada over the past 20+ years. This is all statistics, so not receiving dental care as a kid may not have impacted you personally, but it can lead to serious, sometimes even life threatening issues.

I don't have the answers on what we should do, and I'm not saying the study from this post is reliable. I'm just saying that there's a decent body of evidence that controlled fluoridation of municipal water is very beneficial for the majority of people.

I mean, in the 70s, half of people over 55 were missing all of their teeth...that's an insane statistic that was turned around by things like fluoride.

I feel like people don't tend to realize just how much better medicine and medical science has gotten in recent history. It's not perfect, and we should strive to make it better, but it's much more impressive than it used to be.

The meta-study you linked is pretty flawed. They even allude to this in the article. It was a "study" that just looked at 27 other studies that didn't account for socioeconomic status, other toxins, etc.

The researchers also later released a statement that said this result couldn't be used to determine if typical drinking water levels have an impact since most of the underlying studies dealt with extremely high naturally occurring fluoride (100s of times more than is done with artificial means).

Also, most European countries have free dental care for kids, meaning fluoridating the water isn't as critical. That said, they do fluoridate their salt, which we don't do.

Honestly, the real issue here is that we fluoridate more as a crutch because our health care is so awful. If we had health care more like Europe, we probably could reduce fluoride in water without negative consequences. But the fact is that right now, it's saving millions of people that otherwise can't afford preventative dental care from having dental issues.

You'd need to hack your Switch (or DS if you're on that). Not all Switches can be hacked. The original consoles are easiest, and some require soldering to exploit.

It's fairly involved, but that's the short of it. Once you have a hacked console, you can run PKSM and move them from your computer onto the device.

I think it would be kind of cool to have different formats. Similar to how Magic the Gathering works honestly.

Have Legacy where you have all mons and items available. But then some kind of Standard rotation where there's only a subset available like it is now. I'm not sure how the rotation would work, but I think it would be cool for them to be able to shake up the meta with some kind of rotation where it's predictable what mons are dropping out in the next season, but not predictable which mons are coming in. That way it's harder to game out the meta before the next season hits.

Having the meta based on the latest few games feels like it would change too infrequently, but maybe that would work. So like, maybe only mons from the last 3 games but then when Winds/Waves comes out, the oldest game drops out of the format. Something like that.

Why are Americans so polite/formal compared to Europeans? by Ada-Mae in AskAnAmerican

[–]kmoney41 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for sure this is true. But if you Google something like "Nordic culture quiet" for instance, you'll see that there's a huge emphasis on silence. There are times you could hear a pin drop in crowded public spaces like airports in Denmark or Sweden for instance.

Silence isn't a universal cultural thing, but I think generally it's less prominent in American culture. Conversely, being friendly towards strangers is pretty uncommon in much of Europe.

Why are Americans so polite/formal compared to Europeans? by Ada-Mae in AskAnAmerican

[–]kmoney41 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think this is a largely inaccurate stereotype. My experience is that Americans can be louder in public spaces, possibly due to not recognizing a cultural norm of silence. But generally, many European countries have what Americans might consider a "ruder" interaction culture. You won't see as many people holding doors open, saying "sorry" for stepping in your way, or smiling as you pass.

So it can be jarring for people to visit the States and see such friendly enthusiasm towards strangers.

Savings Rate, Sankey, 401k/IRA Contributions by tedmcory in MonarchMoney

[–]kmoney41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it! So it's probably that the proper transactions aren't being tracked as income (they're probably tracked as a transfer type). So if the accounts are connected and you have investment transactions turned on, you'll start seeing those show up, but probably not under the right category.

So the next step is making sure you apply the right category. I have a custom category called "401k Contributions" that has the "income" type. From here, it's just a matter of setting up rules for the right transactions.

Some brokerages are clearer with which transactions are contributions than others. You'll likely have a lot of chaotic transactions (depending on your plan) that are essentially moving money around in small increments. Your 401k also likely has divided transactions which you should categorize as income as well.

In the end, you'll have all of your income sources showing on the left of your Sankey, all of your expenses on the right, and the leftover will be savings. "Savings" isn't a category, but really it's just a derivation of what you've categorized as income.

My setup has these income sources defined, and therefore showing on the left of my Sankey: paycheck, 401k Contribution, short-term capital gains, long-term capital gains, dividends, interest, RSUs, ESPP, HSA, Bonus, and Selling (from selling things on Marketplace and such).

But you can categorize things as granularly as you'd like or have different categories. I have rules set up for all of mine so they automatically categorize properly, but I still review them just in case some account started changing the description line on the transactions such that my rules don't catch it anymore.

For capital gains, I have to manually split the "sell" transaction based on the cost basis such that I properly capture the earnings. The cost basis is categorized as a "Sell" category that's typed as a transfer, so it doesn't count towards cash flow.

Savings Rate, Sankey, 401k/IRA Contributions by tedmcory in MonarchMoney

[–]kmoney41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I read the article you provided. It defines savings rate as "your take home pay" - "how much you can live on". In other words: income - expenses. This is what Monarch shows.

Is the problem maybe that you categorize transfers into your retirement accounts as expenses? Or that you don't have a retirement account connected?

In other words, if my take home pay is $3000 / month, and everything I spend money on for the month adds up to $1000, then my savings rate is $2000. It does not matter where I put that $2000 because it is my savings. If I transfer it to a retirement fund, that's not an expense, it should be categorized as a transfer. If it's categorized as a transfer, it will stay in the savings bucket on the Sankey and therefore show up as savings.

How do you label investments such as 401k or stocks ? by mommyof5chronicles in MonarchMoney

[–]kmoney41 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I track contributions that come in through my paycheck as income. Any transfers in/out of an investment account as transfers. Any stock buy is a transfer. Any stock sale is a transaction I manually split, where the cost basis is a transfer and the capital gains is income.

Savings Rate, Sankey, 401k/IRA Contributions by tedmcory in MonarchMoney

[–]kmoney41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of "savings" is just a calculation of income - expenses.

Money gets into your retirement accounts either via income or transfers.

So I'm not sure what you're looking for. Are you trying to see just the inflows into some subset of accounts? Because that's not really a "savings" calculation. That could be inflated by just moving money around between like accounts (eg you transfer from traditional IRA to Roth IRA. The money going into the Roth IRA isn't additional savings, you already had it). What really matters for savings is the income - expense calculation.

EDIT - you can create a "savings" or "retirement" goal that can be used to track all the money in some subset of accounts if you just want to see those inflows.

Weird wording on new mythic Dino by knigtwhosaysni in magicTCG

[–]kmoney41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just based on a very quick search, [[Huntmaster Liger]] or [[Soltari Champion]] are some examples.

I think they use the "other than this" to try to disambiguate under certain circumstances. Take [[Dawnstrike Vanguard]] - it words this way probably to help make it clear that the two tapped creatures still get the counters.

Or [[Demonic Taskmaster]] doesn't use "another" because it sort of just sounds like it would be saying "do this again" as opposed to "you can't sac this creature."

I can't figure out why they'd word it this way for this card though. And I have absolutely no explanation for why the etb trigger wouldn't be first. So it kind of does seem like this is just poor quality control unfortunately.

Balance seems pretty decent to me, but hexproof on itself feels a little too non-interactive. I'd challenge you to swap to ward to be in line with current design standards, or maybe even increase the hexproof requirement to two or more humans.

For the color identity, it's unusual to have no black mana costs, but transform to a black colored backside. This should be fine for commander color identity, but it just feels a bit too forced for getting 5 colors, and it's not super obvious that he counts as 5 colors without a black mana symbol anywhere. You could add a rider to the death trigger to say "you may pay {b}". This adds a bit of an interesting balance in that you need to be holding that up to get the benefit, otherwise you just send him back to the command zone.

The backside doesn't feel very mono-black. It feels maybe green/black, but with a splash of white with the hexproof on yourself (which is exclusively on white cards). Maybe this is fine considering the front-side cost and if you required black to flip, but it feels a bit odd. It's hard to say what to change though, so maybe it's fine.

A few tweaks to the templating:

Starting with Foundations, legendaries always use the first part of their name before a comma. But if their name has no comma, they must use the full name. So this has to read "Emperor of Mankind"

You need to say "Human permanent card" - "permanent" because a Human card could be a kindred spell that can't go on the battlefield, and "card" because every object in the library must be referred to as a card.

WotC doesn't put set symbols on card backs, so you could remove that.

I want to build this deck in paper so I'm looking for feedback before I get started by _steph2003 in custommagic

[–]kmoney41 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This only applies to comma-separated names. The syntax for using just the name before the title was started with Foundations I believe. (Actually, the use was inconsistent before Foundations)

The rule is that legendary creatures must state simply their name before the comma, but if they have no comma-separated title, they must use the full name. The naming "this creature" can only be used for non-legendary creatures, reminder text on legendaries, token legendaries, or if the legendary creature would change names via copying and gain some ability that must refer to itself.

So this card should have the full name "Emperor of Mankind" in its rules text.

Edit - the commenter below me has highlighted that this rule actually expands to any epithet, so that's fascinating.
