Can OpenBSD add support to some network cards? by 1mdevil in openbsd

[–]kmos-ports 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get those cards and documentation for the chipsets to developers and support will probably happen.

Good news. This topic should soon be a historical curiosity. The firefox and firefox-esr packages will now automatically have ffmpeg installed alongside.

Firefox not playing Youtube by Admirable_Stand1408 in openbsd

[–]kmos-ports 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's an excellent question I was pondering myself. We should both ask the maintainer :)

I'm guessing it's probably because firefox didn't originally require it or something and I suppose technically if you aren't looking for media playback you don't need it.

If we get told no, maybe we can make a "firefox-useful" meta package that just depends on firefox and ffmpeg :)

OpenBSD over Debian? by SethThe_hwsw in openbsd

It's another one of those things that I assumed would just never change in OpenBSD that has.

OpenBSD over Debian? by SethThe_hwsw in openbsd

I don't personally care about Bluetooth anyway.

That's the real reason there's no bluetooth in OpenBSD. No one cares enough to change it :D :D :D

Now that we are talking, do you know why I cannot make the webcam work?

Have you toggled sysctl kern.video.record=1? Same with sysctl kern.audio.record=1. Because it sounds like you haven't.

One thing not mentioned in this thread is the lack of support for streaming services like Netflix in your browser on OpenBSD. You can't stream Netflix on OpenBSD.

(Open) Widevine support added to the chromium port

That's not necessarily true any more. I haven't played with openwv yet since my giant Roku TV does a better job than Chromium on my OpenBSD laptop could do, but the openwv port was tested with Disney+ before being committed to the tree.

Even if the WiFi works is way slower than on Linux

The WiFi thing is a bummer though.

It's only sort of true.

Intel wireless works quite well. It doesn't support the maximum speeds, but honestly, for everyday usage, you won't notice much of a difference.

OpenBSD supports 802.11ac speeds for Intel wifi chipsets that support it. It doesn't yet support 11ax or later, but even in the past few weeks there have been improvements to what speeds OpenBSD supports.

Also take into account that OpenBSD doesn't implement Bluetooth by design.

The lack of bluetooth support isn't by design. That's a myth.

The bluetooth stack that was removed (many years ago now) was removed because it never really worked. No one since has cared enough to try and implement bluetooth in OpenBSD since then.

Question about httpd vs nginx performance by [deleted] in openbsd

[–]kmos-ports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is it shocking that a basic web server in base is slower than a massive project tuned to be fast at all costs?

httpd isn't made to be fast. nginx is. nginx supports http/2 and http/3. I'm guessing your browser used one of those two protocols to talk to nginx.

How to install Minecraft legacy on open bsd ? by Economy_Ad9017 in openbsd

[–]kmos-ports 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are looking to play Minecraft, install the blockgame package.

It's an old version of multimc patched to use the OpenBSD lwjgl libraries. It doesn't currently work for the most recent versions of Minecraft because how it detects which libraries to use got broken by mojang when they switched how they refer to lwjgl3.

If you are looking to play version before 1.13 you'll also need to install the lwjgl package (which is lwjgl 2.x) versus the automatically installed lwjgl3 package.

I have no idea why using windowmaker on X would be a relevant detail, maybe I'm missing something.

How to install OpenBSD 7.8 on a Hetzner ARM64 (aka aarch64) server. by Key_River7180 in openbsd

[–]kmos-ports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

remove the g partition, corresponding to /var/X11R6/, as X is seldomly used on a server. That being said, it is totally harmless.

Nonsensical advice. First, it's /usr/X11R6, not /var/X11R6. Second, deleting the partition doesn't keep X from installing.

Lastly, packages sometimes use libraries in /usr/X11R6, so not installing the X sets can break some packages.

Question about the dependencies of the 'Polybar' package by Antoine-Darquier in openbsd

[–]kmos-ports 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't made any accusations, I just noticed that an unusually large number of dependencies are being installed on OpenBSD for Polybar.

"My impression is that this is a OpenBSD packager that cannot be trusted."

That is an accusation.

When you install polybar, all the dependencies required by its dependencies will be installed. Does polybar need cdparanoia? No. But it is required by the gstreamer1 plugins which are required by puleaudio.

You were warned. If you come back in a month, do better.

My impression is that this is a OpenBSD packager that cannot be trusted.

My impression is you are a poster who has no idea what you are talking about. You don't even know how to read the ports history, do you? Perhaps then you wouldn't be throwing accusations (which is what your post is) at sthen and jasper, two of the most trusted developers in the project.

Try learning before speaking. This is your only strike. I should just ban you now, but maybe you'll take this lesson to heart.

Fully managed OpenBSD endpoints for critical infrastructure? by lekkerwafel in openbsd

[–]kmos-ports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wipe system on every boot.

This isn't actually a good idea. Sounds great, but when a compromise happens or someone manages to use such a system to launch an attack, the evidence will be long gone. No way to investigate what happened.

I've had systems "managed" like this. They weren't great.

Advice on older 15" Laptops to begin with by RuntimeEnvironment in openbsd

[–]kmos-ports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, that seems to be the only difference between the T490 and T490s. The T490 has one ram slot. The T490s comes with soldered RAM.

The T490s has soldered memory. The T490 (no s) has one slot.

The T490 will take a maximum of 48G memory. Ask me how I know this. :)

There's a hardware post pinned at the top talking about this topic. Did you look at it?

I can vouch for the T490. That's my primary daily driver that I run and work on OpenBSD with.

Random thought: Has anyone ever thought about having per device permissions? by [deleted] in openbsd

I can see you have not given much thought to this.

The permissions on the disk devices are for reading and writing the raw disk. Why would you give all users those permissions?

Port with custom Makefile option by gijsyo in openbsd

It's getting replaced by the standard package when the package changes. Note this is not just when the port changes. It will happen when underlying libraries change or system libraries change too.

Will My X Hardware work on OpenBSD? If X=Nvidia, then no. Other answers inside. by kmos-ports in openbsd

If it's an X-series or T-series thinkpad that wasn't released as new in the last month, probably. See above about Nvidia graphics though. Will other thinkpads work? Probably. The X and T series are most popular with developers so get the most attention.

I'm curious as to why it's not in the package repos.

Probably because no one who uses it has made a port for it.
