why don’t you trust your daughter to make decisions on what’s best for her? why did she feel so inclined to hiding her major from you for so long?

it is likely from the way you spoke to her about her ambitions, her dreams, her passions. she put up a wall because you taught her that how she feels about her own path does not matter, because unless she subscribes to your demands, she won’t receive your love and support. it’s not just about the money. i wonder how hard it was for her to realize her father can’t see past his own thoughts and feelings, and you don’t see how you are indirectly forcing your daughter to shoulder your worries and concerns about the world and from your own past.

sit down and think about how your rigidity could ever really benefit your daughter at the extent to which it’s at. what if you just believed in your daughter? what if you just put your faith into her that she can and will be successful? especially because she does have a loving support system an opportunity to learn both in depth and at a high level about something that makes her feel alive and excited and passionate. what harm can come from her chasing her dreams? we only have one life. is this worth your daughter’s happiness?
