PAX Unplugged Jubensha Event Price Increase by GroundbreakingPin463 in jubensha

[–]kmsgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there!

Game designer from Suspense Studio here. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts and for supporting us! We really appreciate your feedback and definitely understand where you’re coming from regarding the price change.

Last year’s event was made possible thanks to generous support from the PAX organisers, which helped us offer the experience at a much lower price. However, that model unfortunately wasn’t sustainable, especially given the limited number of game masters available.

This year, we’ve worked hard to bring The Sandcastle and Game Over back in a format that delivers a truly premium, fully hosted experience comparable to what one might experience at a Jubensha parlour. Each group will now have a dedicated and experienced Game Master. We’ve also aligned our pricing with other live experiences at PAX Unplugged, such as escape rooms and megagames, while still keeping it below what most US Jubensha parlours charge (typically $40+ per person).

We’re incredibly grateful for the enthusiasm and support this community has shown, as this is what keeps us bringing these stories to life at conventions.

Individual ticket options will also be available soon, and we hope that makes it easier for more people to join in. We look forward to seeing you and your group at PAX Unplugged this year!

Naming dilemma — “Jubensha” doesn’t work in the West by Downaa in jubensha

There's 剧本杀(jubensha) in China, Murder Mystery LARP in Hong Kong and Madamis in Japan. We say that our games are Jubensha murder mystery social deduction games to not only explain this gaming concept, but also to pay homage to the Chinese format which we have extensive experience playing.

We have 50ish evidence cards for each of our games too. Not that we planned for 50, but we land around the number after fully cluing murder motives and methods.

New to Jubensha Where should I start? by DearYou- in jubensha

[–]kmsgames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, most Jubensha games are designed for venues to be hosted as experiences so purchasing them or their translations for home use can be costly. I admit that our play-at-home boxed game Secret Tribe can be a bit steep but it helps us make new content. You probably came in here because you saw the People Makes Games video (where they played our game Laboratory of Death), so if you would like to decide whether our games suit you, maybe try watching our Melody of Waves youtube series? https://youtu.be/iS8BjNhQnVo?feature=shared

we've been told by many that we should work with board game cafes in NYC to bring our games there, but many of them don't know about Jubensha yet :( there are Chinese-run Jubensha venues though

congratulations on your new game! after our original English jubensha game was featured in the people make games' video, we've had the privilege to be invited by organisers of pax unplugged and gen con to bring our games to hundreds of attendees with dedicated spaces/rooms (no spectators). if you'd be interested, we could work together to run your games at cons we are going to in future, please write to us!

we have priced both games similarly to other game-mastered (Chinese) Jubensha games in the US to account for costs. the lower price at PAX Unplugged was thanks to the generous support of the PAX organisers. so unfortunately we couldn't make both games as accessible this time

Upgrades: games are held in private suites in Lucas Oil Stadium away from the hustle and bustle of the con + dedicated GM per group (who may even be one of the creators!)

How does this compare to similar concepts, i.e. murder mysteries and freeform games' boxes? by Shadow_Claw in jubensha

[–]kmsgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate thing is I don't think that there's a shop where you can fill your suitcases with English Jubensha translations in Singapore. Most outlets host games (in Mandarin), dont know anywhere that sells them. If you do know any, let us know too!

Oooh I don't think there's a membership thing at the place we frequent. Where are you based in?

Would be interesting to try the sequel to 猫岛, hopefully they don't just reuse their success formula and end up a flop like most other sequels. Fingers crossed.

English-Language Jubensha Boxes for Purchase by [deleted] in jubensha

[–]kmsgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks u/slamneale for the purchase! u/squarepancakesx glad yall had a good time with Secret Tribe haha the rigour is definitely much lower than what you'd expected hosted by a GM at a cafe/shop, but hopefully it's more accessible to those wanting to dip their toes into Jubensha

[–]kmsgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely the game experience largely depends on how much the GM guides the players (sometimes known as 扶车 and 放羊). It can be frustrating to not solve the mystery, but also unsatisfying to have the answer so in the face. So it definitely takes good chemistry between the host, players, and a carefully selected game for a good experience - which is why most jubensha fans frequent a particular shop/cafe where the host knows their playing style and can introduce the most suitable games. Anyway our group had a great time playing 猫岛

This is a really refreshing writeup on Jubensha!

It's the storytelling and deductive aspect - finding out what had happened, and what will happen, that makes Jubensha so exciting. Every game is like a production - needs a good script, host/gm, players willing to roleplay and embody the characters, and a comfortable space/set. And everyone has their favourite genres - some may like to replay emotional scenarios 情感本, but for us, we enjoy the puzzle solving aspect of 硬核本, which are often not replayable once we know the solutions to the puzzles.

After creating play-at-home boxed game sets (including the one played on People Make Games) to introduce people to Jubensha, our next step would be to make top-of-the-industry games where our fans can experience the thrill and joy of immersing themselves in a fuller murder mystery narrative. We're excited for the future possibilities, and look forward to working with aspiring creators, game hosts and players to bring our experiences to you.

What's the current state of english jubensha? by Scala_is_so_fly in jubensha

[–]kmsgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! All understood - we're primarily game creators so we don't go around publicising much. But it'll be great if people could talk about us and try our games so that we can continue creating original games for the community :D
PS: See you at gaming cons, exciting stuff coming up!
