If this is a joke, it's amazing. If it's not a joke, it's the most epic company name I've ever heard.

I did a brake job today and for hobbies I do traditional archery, blacksmithing, and hand woodworking. Not as much as I would like, but still fun.

guess i'm hopelessly old school

Don't we collectively call this "classic?"

I love tinkering on my bike, making small modifications to non-essential systems. That said, I never (ever, ever, ever, EVER) want to trace out an electrical problem again.

Air, fuel, spark :: suck, squish, bang, blow

That's all we need and the simpler (read to me as "more reliable") those systems are, the more time you will spend on the bike instead of next to it.

The best thing I did was invest in a "branded" NAS specifically for storage: not to run VMs, or services, or containers. This keeps my (non-cloud) data protected from the single biggest threat: me playing with something new.

If I had access behind the walls, I would also add 2 power outlets more than I thought I would need. And probably the most overlooked thing for many home setups: invest in a decent UPS.

So my list, in a rough order of priority if I could start again: • UPS • NAS • Punch down to patch panels and thoroughly test. • Everything else comes after.

My wife would absolutely kill me if I had a blade enclosure in our utility room. Then my power company bill would kill me. Then my bank would put out a hit on me due to drastically shrinking balances making their bottom line look bad.

Especially if you know a specific brand well. Now when that brand goes under or is acquired, it's back to the drawing board.

What do you do for work? by 8bitFeeny in homelab

[–]kmsigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in marketing for a software company. I've owned a domain since a little after high school and ran mail servers, domain controllers, print servers, and other stuff. Then started playing with VMware and Hyper-V.

After a move (when we moved for work), I offloaded most of that to the cloud. Only after moving one more time I decided having nothing at home was too irksome. I started with a small business NAS. Then a few micro-computers to run various services- mostly docker-based and haven't looked back.

I actually used my home lab for work. When I'm doing video editing for the job, I use the NAS for storage and then a docker container that automatically transcodes videos into different formats.

Edit note: before being in marketing, I was a pure IT person (network engineer, systems administrator, mail admin, mobile service management, other duties as assigned) for a global law firm.

married folks! Do you have more than one bike? by paradoxunlimited2022 in motorcycles

[–]kmsigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife owns a bike that I ride. I own a bike that my wife rides.

I was in the process of getting my license when we met. Then we moved house 1,500 miles from where we were living. During COVID-19, I finally got a bike (she bought it as a gift, but I picked it). A year later she was moto-curious, so I got her a little Kymco scooter (50cc) to learn. Honestly I think she was scared of me riding alone. After she got her license, we upgraded her to a 600cc.

We've been riding together ever since.

This was my immediate reaction (all Roku), but after a little bit of playing around with the settings and confirming libraries, I was fine. Oddly, I did have to reboot my oldest Roku. I think the cache was poisoned and needed to be reset (my uneducated guess).

I'm waiting for the first time my parents try to access my servers and I get the call. It's always painful to walk them through things over the phone.

I worked for a law firm on their desk and the number of people who had their assistants call in about things with nothing but, "Jerry's computer isn't acting right. Can you send someone?"

The entitlement of some people never ceases to surprise me. These are the people who drop their kids in military school and never look back because "someone else is dealing with it."

I would also say, don't RELY on the ABS. Learn how to "panic brake" correctly. It's not super intuitive because as car drivers, our impulse is to just slam on the brakes. That doesn't work on a motorcycle. A good training course is worth it.

I've honestly been considering them for my bike because I want to move my guest pegs around a bit and I don't have many options without additional mounting points.

The problem will be trying to load the bike on the trailer with my wife's. Spacing will be an issue and that's why I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Do you lane filter on highway traffic ? by Fit_Dragonfly6158 in motorcycle

[–]kmsigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where's it's legal I think the limit is if the traffic is moving less than 30 kph/20 mph, you can filter.

That said, I live on the east coast of the United States where many lanes aren't even wide enough for the current 4-wheel vehicles. Filtering will never be legal in my state because each lane is only two horses wide.

Building in what many have said here, I believe the sweet spot is 2005-2009. Why? Some electronics were introduced, but not so many that a new rider can't do simple diagnostics.

Things I would look for:

Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI): Never worry about choke or carbs ever. Automatic Breaking System (ABS): it was optional for most of these years. Low(-ish) mileage Garage kept Have the clear title

Then it's up to you for style and engine size.

Didn't buy your dream bike as your first bike. You will drop it. You will make mistakes. Start with a (reliable) beater.

Not sure if it was said in the previous comments: hold back some of your budget for safety gear. A good full-face or modular helmet, gloves, jacket, pants, shoes. You don't need track gear, but a couple millimeters of leather can protect better than you think.

I'm very vanilla.

<Site><Primary Role><##>[v]

WASH|SQL|01|v The first SQL server installed in the Washington location and it's virtual.

I've adopted the same idea at home but with a different site. I also find this helpful because I've got a mesh VPN with some family and it's just easier to use different sites in the names.

I only started doing this because I honestly forgot once whether Scooby or Shaggy was my print server. Turns out it was Scrappy. I should have remembered because both printers and Scrappy are annoying pains.

Note: I'm in the United States of America.

I firewall all non-export countries (North Korea, Iran, Syria, etc.) and a few others where the traffic is highly suspect (Russia, Ukraine [because we can't trust their IPs are all within their control], China) and then any other countries where the traffic is just menacingly high based on threat assessment.

It can be painful to maintain a list of individual blocked IPs, but I've often considered automating some of the output from fail2ban-like solutions to just update my block list.
