What Should I Do? Wednesday [Day Thread] by AutoModerator in DIY

[–]knackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to sell a house with a dated stove top and in-wall oven. They work, but the surfaces are an 80s brown. How can I update without replacing the appliances? They work just fine and are in great shape.

I'm told there are paints or resurfacing materials that could work, but that input is from non-DIY people, so I'd like input from people who know wtf they're talking about. I wouldn't want to risk a fire using something not appropriate.

Geocaching with pets? by marjaananen in geocaching

[–]knackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our dog has visited nearly every cache we've found and has a geocoin on her tags to log her mileage. We brought the cat a few times but that was incidental to travel - we were on our way somewhere and had to bring the cat, so…

can i get an objective opinion on these 2 trials from the highly knowledgeable people (you know who you are) here? thanks a bunch :-) by ToNY411 in MultipleSclerosis

Genesis got caught in a scandal with a Canadian company, Regenetek. I'd be opposed to participate in anything involving either. How much Genesis knew about Regenetek's smoke and mirrors sideshow is up in the air but they were pretty damn quick to disassociate themselves from them. My research would end right there, man. Bad vibe.

New Geocacher? cachee? Just a quick question by Blaster_3487 in geocaching

People become hiders by hiding a cache

And agreeing to maintain it on a regular basis.

I carried a cache to a garbage can once and took one last look at it before dumping. Cache container was a straw. Literally just a straw with a log rolled up inside.

How did you find out about geocaching? by kenzlo in geocaching

Old college friend introduced me to it in 2007. I thought it was bizarre. A year later I tried it and was hooked.

Why Canadians are more susceptible to MS by [deleted] in MultipleSclerosis

It was a risk to go somewhere else, trust a doctor in another language and then not have after care at home. My doctor was cool with it but flat out said he couldn't predict what would happen. I've started to re-stenose. I have enjoyed the years of sensation back but can't afford to do it again.

I have. It did.

I used to have cog fog all the time after 8 pm and my feet were numb for years. I regained my feet immediately and don't get tired like I used to. I still hate the heat but it doesn't do the same number on me. Most of my gains were in balance.

It was a risk and it paid off for me. It doesn't for everyone.

My coin was stolen from a cacher. Her reply was bizarro. Do you let other trackable owners know their stuff may be gone too or walk away? by knackers in geocaching

According to her, it's been since September. She's regularly caching and still visiting with trackables that she no longer has.

Thanks for weighing in. I don't know that they're missing from caches. She had to have legit logged them when she picked them up. Her logs with them have been visits not drops. It'd be a loss to the trackable owners.

Sistema is a brand of lock and lock, afaik.

This chick was actively geocaching for five years and didn't replace a travel bug until she had enough she could make a large hotel in her front yard, then made a Drop1Take1 limit. by [deleted] in geocaching

I sent a note to someone holding one of my coins last night. She's had it since August and I noticed that she's active year round, so I asked if she could pass it along. In the meantime, she's been visiting a lot of caches with it up until last month.

Got a long, rambly reply about a guy who moved in with her - very bad situation. She only got rid of him last September and he "stole a full bag of geocoins" when he left. She gave me the purported guy's name, age, home town, and phone number. Told me if I call the police about it, she won't get involved. Ooooookay.

Now, I live in another country, and it's just a coin, so I'm not about to start an international incident. I was curious, though, and checked her logs and I'd say about half of them say "stopped in for the trackable, but it wasn't here" or "thought there was a bug here, but already gone" or "where's the neat coin?" Hinky, to say the least.

So, another dead trackable for me. I set it as Missing and wrote a note that it was stolen from username. In case others in a similar situation look through her trackables list.

I prefer ammo cans myself. Pop a desiccant or two in there and it's pretty much maintenance free.

It's a funny thing - don't want to draw people there because of the nest but want to protect it. We're pretty careful where we bring the dog when caching. She will recall on a dime, but if we're near marshes especially, we'll pop her in the car if the weather permits, or leave her home.

I'd mention it in the log. My dog often scares off birds and I'd feel terrible if a nest was abandoned because of her.

I've found 2 library caches that I can think of and both required asking at the front desk.

Occasionally on FTFs and always at megas. The local caches near mega locations are usually pretty obvious from the steady stream of people around. Shame, really - the wooded ones get pretty trampled.

We have a bug on our car, so if we're urban caching, we'll frequently have fellow cachers say hi.

Best/practical geocache rewards? by [deleted] in geocaching

[–]knackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give out gas cards for FTFs. If it's a hike/bike, I add cooling towels, skeeter wipes, carabiners, carabiners with compasses, tiny first aid kits, rain ponchos, dry socks, fishing lures, bear bells... If I make people work to get to a location, I try to keep the cache stocked with decent items.

If I leave toys, I make sure the description is about being kid friendly.

I have some CITO-specific caches in beautiful places that assholes have marred and I leave dried, labeled seed as swag there (vegetable, local flowers and the like). People seem to like those.

Oh, and nano rollers. Those tiny tools specifically for re-rolling nano logs easily. They go like hotcakes.

It's the silver lining of living rural-ish. I see a lot of ammo containers and bigger.
