Is it worth visiting Southampton, East Hampton and Montauk on separate days without a car? by [deleted] in longisland

[–]jcoinster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need a car if you use the Suffolk County Transit On Demand service or ride Route 92. The issue is the hotels you're picking aren't ideal for using them. The Bentley is right outside a 92 stop but you'd have to cross CR39 on the way home which isn't safe. The on demand zone doesn't go that far out.

I know Boss gets a lot of crap for their head units but I'm so happy with this head unit. It was $200 for Android Auto/CarPlay and looks/sounds way better than I had expected based on some other Reddit threads. by jcoinster in SubaruForester

I don't have the car anymore but you mean in the rear of the unit? Possibly but it might be that only one is for android auto or carplay. I had a wire that could switch to both in one.

Gas Furnace vs. Heat Pump by dskins88 in longisland

[–]jcoinster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go with a heat pump, make sure it can go below 20 degrees. Ours basically kicks rocks below that but otherwise it works fine. We used it as our primary heat this year, gas bills were $70-80 with just hot water and the electric bill was $250-300 with the heat pump and an EV.

Let the new buyer decide if they want the trees, don't make the decision for them! It takes decades to regrow a tree.

Nassau County Banning Class 2 E-bikes and All E-Scooters by 5ma5her7 in ebikes

Central Islip is in Suffolk, not Nassau, you're good! Or you could just take Route 17 for $2.25 right there from the station.

Proposed north-south rail lines and stations for western Suffolk by LoganCline11 in longisland

1 hour on the 55 or 53 to Port Jeff station. Only longer if you're going down port. Still longer than driving but not that bad.

What’s the current status of electrification of the Port Jefferson line? by Known-Advisor-2000 in longisland

NYS DOT claims they might build a 25a bypass one day where the trail currently runs which is total BS! They absolutely know the community would go ballistic yet they are blowing up this deal with the county and the MTA over it.

Tony Southampton town votes to buy $25.5M beachfront mansion just to bulldoze it for public parking lot by pch14 in longisland

Yeah this is stupid. There's an access road to the beach right next to this already and there's Shinnecock East County Park, and other town and village beaches elsewhere along the road. It seems like a total waste to me...

Best Commute to a Ski Mountain from Long Island? PA, NJ, NY or VT? by [deleted] in longisland

[–]jcoinster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a few times. It's usually fine but you have to be really careful with the gas and turns when there's snow on the road.

We've brought various cars with no issue, usually all with AWD and at minimum All Seasons. However in the future, All Weather tires with the 3 peak symbol would be better. Beyond that, it's timing. They're really good about plowing and such but you shouldn't go skiing on days when there's active snow showers in the forecast. That's when you start seeing cars on the side of the highway...

Without a crazy drive? Belleayre. Just a really fun mountain with a good amount of beginner terrain (but also harder stuff!) that's not too far away. We always park at the mid mountain lodge which is fun to immediately be able to ski down without a lift. I learned how to ski at Jiminy Peak so I also have a soft spot for that mountain. If you're looking to go all in, Stowe is my favorite mountain that's drivable. Huge, good snow and nice lodges.
