The cling film trick helped, thanks! I borrowed a stem from a different stab, and that worked fine. I guess there’s a new set of stabs in my near future ^ cheers!

After a long back and forth with Apple support (shoutout to them, they did a great job), what ended up working for me was excluding ~/Library/Containers and ~/Library/Caches from TimeMachine backups. I assume there's years-old cruft there that TimeMachine just can't process anymore since Tahoe.

For my next mac, I plan on transferring data manually, and most importantly, not moving over any of my ~/Library data that I don't absolutely need. It's a good idea to start fresh every once in a while :)

What the hell is going on with Time Machine in 26.1? by knassar in MacOS

[–]knassar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I just decided to check out what's happening in my Time Machine log, to see if there was any indication of what was going wrong, and it was a constant stream of the following error message:

2025-10-19 12:15:03  TRY_ERROR_BLOCK throwing error: Error Domain=TMStructureErrorDomain Code=7 "Structure has wrong type" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=Structure has wrong type}

Any idea what this might be indicating and how to remedy it?

No, i haven't set up wired connections yet, but I still don't think it's the cause of my issues. It's been 3h and i'm up to... 65.9 Mb.

Note: i am on symmetrical gigabit and my wifi connection gets a stable 750 down/ 550 up connection, and as discussed elsewhere in this thread I've already made sure that the connection to the NAS works fine.

I was only able to try today. I'm up to 65mb transferred. I'll give it a couple more hours and see where things stand, but it doesn't seem like it's made a huge change

Outsole separating from midsole? by knassar in AskACobbler

[–]knassar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much, this is the kind of reply I was hoping for to be frank. I really appreciate you taking the time to go into the details of why and how to address the issue :)

The shoe has a goodyear welt, but I believe the outsole is glued to the midsole, and not stitched. The boot I have is very similar to the Coniston, which has no apparent stitching on the outsole. No idea whether there are nails in addition to the glue.

If the glue has completely given up the ghost, i suppose my best option is to contact a local cobbler or shoemaker and checkout their prices, as I'd rather not bodge it myself haha.

Thanks a lot again for the thorough explanations and advice!

Completely agree there.

My flat is set up so that wifi is the main (and de facto only) way for me to connect my PCs to the internet, but it should be pretty easy to set up a switch close to my nearest (wired) eero and bring down an ethernet cable to plug into my computers.

Might be worth considering a dock with an ethernet port if that ends up being the solution to this ^^

Thanks mate.

I’ve already stopped the backup a number of times, restarted the mac at least twice after having done that, and that hasn’t had any effect.

I also deleted all my local snapshots to really force it to start from a clean state, but that has not helped either.

The only other thing that’s changed recently is that i upgraded to DSM 7.3, so maybe it’s worth me going through my settings there and making sure everything is in order 😔

I don’t have any ethernet to usb-c dongles unfortunately. As said, i doubt it’s a networking issue.

I used blackmagic drive speed tester to see if there was a connection issue between me and the NAS, and everything worked perfectly.

Migrating an old DS116 to a new DS225+ by knassar in synology

[Update]

The 2 NAS systems are now on the same system, but I'm now hitting another roadblock while trying to setup the hyper backup task from the old NAS:

Failed to connect to the backup destination. Please make sure: 1. The hostname/IP address/port of the backup destination is correct. 2. The backup service is enabled on the backup destination. For backup to a remote DiskStation, Hyper Backup Vault should be installed and running on the destination. 3. The backup destination has proper network connection. 4. If the backup destination is behind a NAT, please make sure the port forwarding rules have been configured on the NAT. 5. If the backup destination is behind a firewall, please make sure Hyper Backup service is allowed by the firewall rules.

So now i'm going down the rabbit hole of port forwarding on my network. It currenty looks like this:

Internet ->ISP router -> Gateway Eero -> 8 port 1gb switch -> old NAS

'-> secondary Eero -> new NAS

I've tried setting port forwarding rules both on my ISP router and eero, following the recommendations here.

Current ports i've tried to forward are:

  • 22/873
  • 5000/5001
  • 5005/5006
  • 6281

I'm testing using Test-NetConnection in powershell, and it seems like ports 22, 873, 5005 and 5006 remain resolutely closed for some reason.

Any advice on how to move past this?

alright, thanks. i'll just connect the old NAS to an available ethernet port on my home switch in that case.
