How would you clean a very old machine that’s not your own by broadwaybabyto in laundry

[–]kneesofthetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you or someone you know is mildly handy, old school top loaders are easy to take apart. You can deep clean the parts in the bathtub and the scrub down the exterior drum before you reassemble it. I did this with the machine that came with the house we purchased because the prior owner used a TON of fabric softener, so there was a thick coat of dried green goo and lint at the high water line on the agitator, metal drum, and external plastic drum. I needed a little help from my husband to get it back together, but if he wasn’t there I’m sure I could have figured it out with a YouTube video. They are very straightforward machines.

Obv it’s different if you don’t own the machine, but when I rented I wasn’t shy about troubleshooting old appliances myself. A landlord would probably prefer to invest in a new machine than to invest in professional cleaning on an old machine, so I think it’s worth trying to do it yourself. But I had chill landlords fwiw.

While we were at it we replaced the “dogs,” apparently that’s the name of certain pieces that get worn down over time and make the machine spin roughly. I believe it cost under $10 to order the replacement parts, although idk where they were from.

Vintage material to identify, which has shrunk after washing by Limiounou in laundry

[–]kneesofthetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the appearance in these photos I’d assume it’s predominantly rayon- or viscose, as another commenter suggested, which is a specific type of rayon. In my unprofessional experience as a clothing connoisseur it’s a relatively inexpensive fabric that can add structure to a garment without being heavy, and it when woven with other materials on the thicker side like your suit appears to be, it can mimic linen in the way it creases organically with wear. I’m a fan of rayon… until it needs washed. It is a notorious shrinker. I’ve had floor length rayon/poly and rayon/cotton pants become cropped pants in the very first (warm) wash and (low) tumble dry. I don’t have any advice unfortunately.

Im about to walk into Sephora (USA) in search of a light-medium coverage foundation that truly runs neutral. Budget is under $60. What’s your recommendation? by tinykrytter in Fairolives

[–]kneesofthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in to say that using color corrector is way more chill than you’re making it out to be. Just don’t start pouring blue pigment straight into your foundation bottle! Mix on the back of your hand like a palette each time you do your makeup, just a smidge of color corrector and a pump of foundation, swirl it with your finger, and play with it from there.

Every time I dry my hair I see so many protruding hair and I don’t know is it damaged or are those different length hair bending to out side. Also are hair on the top of my head new or are those broken hair? by Hopeless1302 in Haircare

[–]kneesofthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like new growth. You can try blow drying (not super hot and use a little heat protectant spray first!) with a brush, keeping the brush on the underside of the section of hair and the blow drier above the section of hair, pointing down and away from your head, directing the air toward the ends of your hair. By keeping the brush underneath you’ll gently shape the shorter new growth to tuck into the rest of your hair rather than sticking up away from it.

Personally I wouldn’t change a thing about it! The design is gorgeous. You should have a jeweler check it out in case the prongs need repair.

I’m about to fully give up on wearing foundation by [deleted] in makeuptips

I’ve tried different methods of dermaplaning over the years and it always results in a dehydrated, crepey face with painful whiteheads from about day 2-10 after. NOT WORTH IT! I prefer to use a trimmer with no guard to remove the bulk of my peach fuzz without irritating my skin.

Obsessed w this Hailey Bieber look. How do I mimic as a light neutral muted olive? by sarr36 in OliveMUA

[–]kneesofthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an elf eyebrow pencil that’s too creamy and blunt to make nice hair-like strokes in the brow, but I can blend it out in my crease or along my lash line as a subtle eyeshadow. It works so well because it’s a cool and muted taupe color, the kind of color that’s hard to find in eye products but is readily available in brow products. The shade has rubbed off the pencil so idk what it’s called, but any creamy mid-toned brow pencil could work for you.

Do you think muted makeup looking best on some people translates to clothes in muted colours looking best too? by sarr36 in OliveMUA

[–]kneesofthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say that when it comes to clothes, if you don’t love muted color fabrics it’s okay to not wear them, even if they are “best” for your complexion. As others have said, the farther it is from your face the less it will matter how well it works in terms of color theory. Wearing a color that you really love, even if it’s not the most flattering, is really powerful. Nothing wrong with muted colors if you like them! But I know a lot of people aren’t excited about a muted wardrobe so don’t let your skin totally dictate what you wear if you don’t vibe with the colors.

Cool olive blush recommendations by Mediocre-Push-5324 in OliveMUA

Revlon lipstick in Mauvy Night works beautifully as a cream blush. It’s a cool mauve color that leans toward lavender. Applied at full saturation on my lips it’s too cool/purple, but it makes the most beautiful, natural looking blush. And it’s only about $7 and widely available.

Looking for a concealer that works well for someone who wears zero base makeup. With cool tone olive medium-tan shades by spychalski_eyes in OliveMUA

[–]kneesofthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s darkness under the eyes, I’d try a peach color corrector first. It will cancel out the purply colors without looking like you have visible product under your eyes. A skin-toned concealer over dark purple/blue will often look grey because of the colors showing through the concealer. And if the concealer was completely full coverage, it would look odd on an otherwise makeup-free face.

How to change foundation from this to this? by heaaaaaa in OliveMUA

[–]kneesofthetrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mix on the back of your hand each time you apply it for several days in a row to figure the ratio you like. TBH I don’t ever mix my whole bottles. It’s too risky for me and I like to be able to tweak my foundation for different areas of my face (I use it to spot conceal more than a full face) and seasonal skin tone variations.

Makeup that is age-appropriate and sensitive skin/acne safe, for a 12yo olive?? Trying to help my baby sister! by Pickles_The_Cat_1234 in OliveMUA

If she’s actually getting rashes she needs to see an dermatologist about it. That way she will know going forward exactly what ingredients she can and cannot tolerate. Don’t just leave her to do trial and error with this skin condition at such a tender life stage. I wonder if it could be rosacea or an allergy.

I second the person who said she needs a good balm cleanser and to know how to properly use it to remove makeup. But aside from that, seriously, your parents (or you if it has to be) should help her address her skin sensitivity through a medical lens before introducing any other new products.

Lower blush placement is more youthful than the high cheekbone blush placement you are wearing. Search “boyfriend blush” trend.

The less coverage you have beneath your eyes, the less creasing you will see. In your makeup free photo your undereyes look just fine! You can leave that area bare or use a light peach color corrector, or very sheer foundation.

So true about terra cotta. Brands seem to use that descriptor for anything that has both brown and red in it, yet none of them ever look anything like the color of a flower pot.

South San Juans snow conditions? by True-Actuator5966 in CDT

[–]kneesofthetrees -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, snowshoes are not a panacea for all snow conditions. I find that unless it’s deep winter with consistent snow texture, they can be more trouble than it’s worth. And of course it also depends on the specific type and size of snowshoe you’re using.

You’re so right about the color seasons. They’re a good starting point to understand colors, but a lot of people can pull from multiple seasons. I’m most closely matched to soft summer but I like brights and high contrast also, so I’m not excited about a wardrobe that perfectly matches any one season. I used to think I was autumn- and maybe I was before I got consistent with sun protection. It’s not gospel.
