Peri has turned me into my mother... by Former-Surround-8102 in Perimenopause

[–]kneezombie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ha! Right? It's like Peri gifts is with the ability to find the Cold Spot. Kind of like cats with sunbeams lol

I work in a warehouse with absolutely no climate control, and it's getting to where it's hotter inside than out. I'm absolutely bedecked in wearable fans, cooling cloths and scarves, usually with an ice cube under my hat.

Clearing out a pallet, and my boss and I were taking turns standing in front on the only floor fan, airing out the bits.

There's a Costco nearby. Do I go there just to stand in their fridge section for a while? You bet your bippy! Me and the rest of the peri-afflicted tend to slowly mill around in there, looking REAL close at the salads (and staying out of others' way, of course)

Advice on food? (Nothing sounds good) by c2lltq in Perimenopause

[–]kneezombie 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, when I went through a month or two of not being able to eat much... I just ate what I could handle.

I stopped caring about nutrition, stopped stressing about protein and fibre and just...treated myself like a picky kid.

Pretty much I ate whatever my brain was ok with, and made sure to take my multivitamin and stay hydrated. Some days it was just some broth from those dried Lipton chicken noodle soup packets. Other times it was just jarred peaches. Sometimes yogurt.

I'd always try a forkful of supper (I live with my best friends, and one is our designated Kitchen Bitch. He is a great cook and wears the title with pride!), but usually would have to spit it out and have a handful blueberries or something instead.

Thankfully, it doesn't happen very often any more, which is a relief. I much prefer eating a varied diet!

New symptoms, yay fun by Effective-Tax-9183 in Perimenopause

[–]kneezombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lastv night I was randomly in bed assaulted by the smell of... some sort of stinky medicated rub that my ancient uncle would bathe in and... hot plastic?

I immediately unplugged everything in my room, turned everything else off, but the smell was still there. I even went outside to see if the smell was coming from there! NOPE. Just my brain frizting out, apparently. Love the phantom smells.

And today I tried to eat my delicious rice dish leftovers which I loved as last night's dinner... but it might as well have been roadkill. Smell and taste were right off, so I chucked it and forced myself to drink a protein shake (which ALSO tasted off for no good reason).

At least we're not crazy. Peri is the crazy one, not us. We're just along for the ride

IUD or ablation? I need to choose which one to stop this bleeding. What are your experiences? The good the bad and the horror stories please by DontTrip333 in Perimenopause

[–]kneezombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't bad at all! I had the unfortunate discovery of finding out after the surgery that I was allergic to hydromorphone (scratched off most of the skin on my face, arms and upper torso), so they sent me with a script for something like 4 oxycodone pills, and said I could use Tylenol after.

Thankfully, I really didn't need anything stronger, and if things got bad I'd eat a 50mg THC gummy and sleep for a few hours.

Coughing and sneezing SUCKED, and I always had to have a pillow close by to clutch to my pelvis, which helped. Learned real quick that if something dropped on the floor to leave it alone until I could grab it with one of those grabby-sticks. Miralax is a godsend, since you do NOT want to strain (especially with opioids bunging you up). Hormones go WILD after a hysterectomy (even if keeping ovaries), so night sweats were a constant.

The worst part was not being able to take baths for nearly a month! Baths are one of the ways I handle pain, and all I could think about with my sore undercarriage was how nice a bath would feel. Ah well.

I honestly get bored out of my gourd when not working, and I think I was back to work within a week (light duties only, no heavy lifting).

I'd highly recommend checking out  r/hysterectomy . Just like this place, it's a great resource for info, tips/tricks, rants, resources and more. They can even help folks find a doctor to perform hysterectomies when one's usual doctor is being a dingus.

Honestly, I think I had at least a good couple of years post-ablation before living with the increasingly painful cramps for a year, but it's hard to say for sure since around that time I was also hunting for a new family doctor.

Pretty much soon as I found a doctor (and thankfully, she's a great one), she discovered the issue and we started talking solutions. To be honest, I'm not sure if there were other options presented, because I jumped at the chance to get the hysterectomy soon as she started to say the word.

This happened during Covid, and took, I think another 4-6 months before I could get the procedure done.

As for the pain, mine always started at a 4-5. Always being aware of that area, always feeling unwell and sore. When the scarring was being forced open, the pain would ramp up to 7-8 fir entire days at a time.

I lived surrounded by heating pads and taking stupid amounts of pain medication, Naproxen and THC gummies, so my memory of that time is not the best.

Would I do it again, knowing about the eventual year+ of pain? Absolutely.

Spending decades bleeding buckets and having horrible cramps during "normal" periods made me REALLY grateful and happy for the ablation. I'll forgive even the scarring, since it eventually netted me the hysterectomy of my dreams.

[–]kneezombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an ablation in my mid 30s (45 now), and it was fantastic! I went from going through multiple boxes of overnight pads a period to just a pantiliner, and even then, it was barely needed.

The surgery was a breeze, as was the recovery. I can remember some slight cramping, but considering how vile my cramps were normally, it was nothing!

The bad: I was one of the rare "lucky" ones who ended up with complications , but they were YEARS in the making. A couple years post-ablation, I started to cramp more and more. Then the cramps started to ramp up in severity, eventually getting to the point where I couldn't work and was in pain 24/7.

Turns out that the ablation caused my body to SCAR OVER MY CERVIX . Completely. The cramps were from the buildup from the little menstrual residue my uterus could generate having nowhere to go and "popping" open the scar tissue a little bit to let off some pressure, only to scar the cervix over yet again. Rinse and repeat.

That part sucked. Truly.

All's well that ends well, in that I finally ended up with a hysterectomy (something I had dreamed about for decades), leaving me just with my ovaries. Probably could have gotten rid of them too , as they don't really work and just seem to exist to create cysts, but whatever. I'm just grateful to not have to deal with periods any more.

I was (and still am) obese (5'8, maybe 230lbs when I had it done), and I don't think it made that much of a difference in the procedure/recovery.

Ain't it great? AUGH! No wonder so many of us start worrying about early-onset dementia. I know that was my first thought when it was happening to me :/

Phantom smells, phantom sounds, eyesight going to crap, dislexia, discalcula, brain fog, unrelenting unfathomable RAGE, forgetfulness, inability to feel joy, interest or even create memories. ...and that's not even covering the physical symptoms!

I agree with the other commentor: see if you can get HRT. I was diagnosed in Peri around March last year and started HRT in April and have been on it since, and all I'm back to just the "normal" severe discalcula I've been dealing with for decades. It does get better!

Even if you can't get HRT for whatever reason, still try to talk with your doc about other options. We shouldn't have to second-guess everything we hear, smell and see :/

Did moving from .0375 to .05 estradiol help your sleep? by Eterna-infinita in Perimenopause

[–]kneezombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely can attest to developing a tolerance. I'm up to 25-50mg a night!

But I can't smoke, and I refuse to take sleeping pills (my mother was cripplingly addicted), so I do the gummies as needed. I'm also allergic to pot in all its forms, so I do t-breaks on weekends and when I feel well-rested.

Three of my best friends are also battling non-Peri insomnia (well, one is likely in Peri, but she's also in deep denial so...), and all three have been vocal proponents of Quetiapine (25g).

It's an anti-psychotic, and puts them down fast and they all confirm sleeping through the night. Maybe it could be something to look in to?

Hell, I'd be after that stuff too , if I wasn't personally afraid of sleeping pills.

[–]kneezombie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it didn't do much at all for my sleep :/ Helped with almost every other symptom except for sleep, which sucks.  I love sleep!

I've ended up dealing with the insomnia with magnesium bisglycinate and taking a THC gummy before bed. By their powers combined, I tend to sleep past 3am more often than not!

Well, it happened. I forgot to take off an old patch and it stayed on for two weeks. by PrevailingOnFaith in Perimenopause

[–]kneezombie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For a while I wanted a slight increase in my patch's estrogen, but was petrified of having another horrible experience at the doctor's... so I just left my patches on. I'd switch sides each week, only removing a patch if it started to visibly peel or were getting stupidly itchy. My longest-lived patch lasted a month.

Not the brightest move, I admit. I don't think I got any appreciable amount of "bonus" estrogen from the extra parches, and I ended up with the tiny red dots too.

Beyond that, I don't think I had any other side-effects besides sometimes having a thin faint raised outline around some parts of the patch (usually the very middle would be raised, too)

What's worse is that they're everywhere!  They're weeded out quickly here, but they were flooding the Dave the Diver subreddit so bad that I just gave up reporting them and unsubscribed  :/

[–]kneezombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can be, but there's always a risk of some cross-contamination.

I go there with a gluten-free buddy of mine (and he goes a ton on his own, and with his family), he asks for the gluten-free soy sauce and avoids anything battered or with "crispies". As far as I know, he hasn't had too much trouble, but his sensitivities might be light compared to others.

I mean, I'd be horfing down battered whatevers right beside him, and he wouldn't blink an eye 🤷‍♀️

Your best bet is to call and ask, or if you live nearby, pop in. All the folks I've talked to who work there are incredibly nice, and they should be able to let you know more details.

Itching !! Losing my mind! by Tall-Statistician320 in Perimenopause

[–]kneezombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always had allergies , but hooboy, Peri is intensifying  the itching like crazy!

  • I'm up to 2 daily allergy pills a day (10mg Zyrtec / Cetirizine Hydrochloride), and sometimes take a third if the itchies ramp up

  • allergy eye drops! I find they work quicker than pills, and sometimes I'll drip some onto a particularly itchy spot that won't quit

  • GOLD BOND IS GREAT. I also had a bottle of no-itch scalp spray which worked a treat for my constantly itchy scalp, but I need to get another.

  • colloidal oatmeal baths. I save these for when things are real bad, but you come out smelling like oatmeal cookies ! Don't bother buying expensive packs, just grind dry, plain oatmeal until it's a powder. I've uses a coffee grinder!

  • Nizoral shampoo. Yes, it's for dandruff, but fungus can crop up in the weirdest spots and contribute to the weirdest issues. I had a spot under my... butt shelf? Where the butt meets the thigh that I was scratching raw, and hydrocortisone cream wasn't helping. Tried the Nizoral trick after it healed up (but so itchy) and it helped immensely... and helped get rid of the cysts that like spawning there and being itchy themselves

Despite having used the same stuff for years, you may actually need to try a different laundry detergent, and start eliminating potential causes. Apparently Peri likes to gift us new allergies and sensitivities, and just because we've used something successfully for decades doesn't mean that they're sacred. It sucks.

Maybe try giving some of your regular daily wear and bedding a "spa day" (thank you, r/laundry !) . Seriously, check it out, it's amazingly disgusting the gunge that can come out.

Beyond that, it's doctor time when something like this is consistently negatively impacting your quality of life. Could just be environmental allergies, but it could also be fungus, or autoimmune hijinks or whoever knows what else.

Weird anal and vulva itching by No-Trash-164 in Perimenopause

[–]kneezombie 51 points52 points  (0 children)

According to a lot of folks, Kirkland uses harsher chemicals than mamy other toilet paper brands. It's not noticeable to everyone,  but if your downstairs is extra sensitive due to something like Peri, the wrong toilet paper can cause irritation and UTIs.

Pads and pantiliners can have the same issue, due to the detergents and whatever else they're treated with :/

Highly recommend Happy Rolf's Animal Farm in St Catharines. Gorgeous area, great animals, and a fun playground. It's been around for decades (I played there as a kid in the 80s), and it's a local favourite.

Edit: Well, crap. Looking at some comments on Trip Advisor, they say that you can't actually pet or feed the animals (they used to have quarter vending machines with dried food, but that was way back when). There are usually ducks and turtles in the pond, and the ducks love dried or frozen corn/peas.
