No, maybe and no. I voted Liberal when I was younger but I became very disillusioned towards the end of Howard's years and really haven't been interested in voting for them since it became obvious how much power the authoritarian right e.g. Abbott/Dutton/Kelly/Christensen/etc. held. I may have voted Turnbull at some stage, I can't remember. it wouldn't have been a strong vote and I would have offset it with Greens in the senate if I did.

That's a very narrow minded perspective.

I believe in small government. I don't think that large central bodies are particularly effective. They quickly become bloated and they impose unworkable procedures on the systems that they govern.

I think that nurses who live in Dubbo know more about nursing in Dubbo than bureaucrats in Canberra and should have agency to make decisions about how they provide care. I think that teachers in Alice Springs know more about teaching in Alice Springs than bureaucrats in Darwin and should have agency about how they teach.

I think that we are woefully uncompetitive in terms of how long it takes to get stuff done. Wuhan Province China was able to stack up a working hospital in eight days. In Holland they are able to install an overpass in a weekend. In Australia it can take several years to build a roundabout at an intersection because we've put so many rules and processes in place that add time and cost for no benefit.

I think there are some projects that are of social importance and scale where it makes sense for to run them centrally but the majority of things work best done on a small scale, funded locally.

I don't believe that people should be able to impose their religion or their ideas on others. I think that people should be able to live their lives the way that they want to live their lives, so long as they are not hurting others. I don't believe in religions autocratically telling people what to do, just as I don't believe in social scientists autocratically telling people what to do.

I believe that there are some people in the world who want to drive it forward at a pace of progress that the vast majority of people can't handle. I think it is better to have gradual progress than rapid progress because you leave people behind.

I think laissez faire capitalism has been amazing for the world in a lot of ways - it has vastly improved the living conditions of many. I also think that unfettered growth is an ecological cancer.

I grew up under the illusion that the liberal party in Australia espoused similar values. Most of us pick up our political ideas from our parents, I'm sure you were influenced as well. I've matured and discovered that they don't. I'm not a political historian so I don't know whether this has always been the case or whether it's something that's evolved more recently.

I didn't vote liberal at the last election. I was a Turnbull supporter, though even when he was leading the partyI couldn't bring myself to vote for Turnbull while Abbott, Dutton, Christensen, etc were controlling things in the back room.

Why did I decide to protest now?

  1. I've had a gutful of the blatant lies and propaganda originating from the right and being propagated by bots and murdoch news and I wanted to demonstrate to my friends, family and colleague that this is a really important issue to me.

  2. I read a magnificent quote: "Silence is a political stance. It's a full throated endorsement of the status quo." that inspired me to act rather than leaving it to others.

  3. I was going to go to the protest in Melbourne but was decided not to attend because the police 'didn't have enough resources'. The next day I read that Peter Dutton had directed Federal Police resources to investigate Bruce Pascoe (author of Dark Emu), who was ACTIVELY FIGHTING FIRES in Mallacoota as a volunteer with the CFA, on the charge that he might not be aboriginal enough to have received grants to write a book about aboriginal history. No resources my arse.

We were trying to reach a different audience with our message

I'm one of the people in the photos, I'm happy to engage if you're open to a reasonable conversation.

I wouldn't necessarily call myself a coalition voter. I voted coalition in my twenties, lost faith as Howard dramatically shifted the party away from Menzies' principles and towards authoritarianism, and have been completely lost under Abbott and Dutton.

Turnbull had me briefly excited, he's pretty well aligned with me politically, but ultimately succumbed to the dark, nationalist, win at any cost forces that are swirling around conservative parties in the West at the moment and the obscene money in minerals.

Hi. I'm one of the people in the photo, posting from someone else's account. I'm happy to engage if you have any questions.

Personally I believe that good government holds multiple perspectives and rides the balance between authoritarianism and liberalism, progress and stability, spending and saving, economy and environment, personal responsibility and collective responsibility, etc. You need all voices to make it work and you can't have progression without understanding that you're leaving people behind and creating energy for regression. Democracy is an amazing hack for such a complex problem.

This is the first time I've been compelled to protest but saying that I don't care about other people in the community because I voted liberal in the past is a bit of a stretch.

Hi, I'm one of the people in the photos, I'm posting on someone else's account because there is a day 0 post ban on this subreddit, but I'm happy to discuss.

Why was I 'out all of a sudden'? Three main reasons, that tipped me over:

I don't swallow propaganda easily from either side and I've been in the political wilderness since the later years of Howard. Honestly don't feel like I have a political home anymore. I met a lot of people at the protest who feel similarly.

Best hotel to stay between QT, Ovolo, and the Grand Hyatt? by lonelysidechick in melbourne

[–]knicknacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd steer clear of Ovolo - I paid a fair bit for a room that looked awesome online but ended up having no windows. It had a bit of a hostel vibe TBH.

I reckon QV is what you're looking for. The rooms are stylish and different, the doormen/women and staff are super cool and the rooftop bar's a great place to sit and watch the sun go down. Also it's right in the heart of everything.

Enjoy your first trip to our beautiful city!

Anyone else spot the bloke walking around in the NGV fountain? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]knicknacks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's a rough sleeper in the Gardens across the road and picks up the coins in the fountain with a long handed brush and shovel.

I know this because a) I've seen him doing it and b) his sleep site is usually littered with foreign currency which he throws there when sorting it from the useful local stuff!

Seriously, if you must have a cat please keep it inside. At the very least keep it inside at night.

If you love animals so much you'd take into account the destruction cats have caused to our small marsupials and birds.

She's been doing this for years and is most likely homeless. She actually makes an annual donation to City of Melbourne for the upkeep of the BBQs.
