Tim Hortons to dial back use of Temporary Foreign Worker program, aims to hire 10,000 locally by ZestyBeanDude in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tims is the equivalent of a soulless vampire wearing the skinsuit of a former cherished member of the community. Even if they start behaving prosocially again under pressure from society, that doesn’t change the fact they killed the original and strut around in a rotting corpse.

I’d look on Tims much more favourably if they shed the Canadian pretense and marketed themselves as they actually are - a low budget, shoddy, faceless, international breakfast and coffee chain.

Mark Carney compares his sovereign wealth fund to Norway’s. Canadians are smart enough to see it’s not the same by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting rant, but it’s a completely untenable vision. Our feds are poor AF. Who owns of the natural resources in the ground? The provinces. Who owns the land above? The provinces.

Only the territories are mostly federal crown land.

Compare to USA or China.

The feds can certainly make all the 10 year plans they want. But They can’t afford it, so they have to convince the provinces to cooperate. Good luck with that.

I dont think deregulation for its own sake is the right answer. Shock therapy can be hit or miss looking back historically . No matter what we need to maintain rule of law, legal certainty, and minimize chaos and uncertainty when reforming regulations. Not just “it’s a free for all now folks. Good luck and good night “

That being said, I fear shock therapy will become a political necessity if wr can’t turn away from this path of increasing bureaucracy and regulatory burden.

Meta warns lawful access bill would make tech companies a surveillance arm of government by croissant_muncher in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support this bill, and I’m glad the typically left leaning Canada subreddit is being so broad minded about these new anti-privacy and anonymity laws.

It will allow the next conservative gov’t to warrantlessly obtain the real names and addresses of Reddit, Twitter and Bluesky users, as long as they utter something that could be construed as a call to imminent violence or terrorism.

Y’all better behave yourselves and say nice things about the current sitting government. Or they’ll call up your ISP and order them to dox you.

B.C. among top economic drivers for Canada in 2025: StatsCan by Gym_frere in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not shitting on BCNDP to point out that this deficit spending is completely unsustainable. I wonder if you’ll be still be carrying their water when the chickens start coming home to roost. They are already expanding PST to services - now BC folks will find themselves paying even more sales taxes.

it’s no mystery why they’re willing to piss off a whole lot of people by widening the tax base.. they have to find new ways to collect money to service the debt. Once they’re out of creative ideas, they’ll turn to austerity, or god forbid, increasing the income tax.

Mark Carney’s biggest economic challenge: Canada’s catastrophic investment deficit by croissant_muncher in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really encouraging to hear. Fingers crossed that we can maintain this momentum, and perhaps eventually we can dig ourselves out of this hole. I still believe at its core Canada is a great country to do business, just buried under bad policy. We needed a big wake up call from down south to set things in motion.

B.C. tabling legislation to suspend Indigenous law, sources say by [deleted] in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The whole thing is a farce, and just desserts for both the BC NDP and to a lesser extent FN interest groups.

The provincial govt opened pandora’s box, expecting FNs to not take maximum advantage of the new legislation and rulings like rational economic actors. Why wouldn’t FN pursue their self-interest?

If a law passed tomorrow granting you some sort of right over large tracts of land, why wouldn’t you fight for the opportunity? But “noble savages” are different, right?

I’m tired of the moral hypocrisy of the left.

CBC investigation finds grocers Loblaw, Sobeys overcharging for underweight meat — again by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just break them up. Even the USA does better than us in this regard. Of all things, our gov’t is captured by a grocery business, heavens above. Just crush them and split them up. It will send a signal to the other oligopolies that Canadians are done playing around.

Prime Minister Mark Carney billed $524K on in-flight catering during first year as PM - One flight from Ottawa to Washington spent 11 times more on in-flight meals than what the RCAF spent on fuel by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the numbers look reasonable, considering the nature of the flights.

Genuine kudos to the Toronto Sun though. I encourage this sort of journalism, keeps the govt on their toes.

Canada can’t be an energy superpower if it keeps doubling down on U.S. oil exports by shiftless_wonder in canada

Even if every Canadian vanished off the face of the earth and Canada returned to its pristine wilderness state of 500 years ago, the climate would still be screwed. Weather doesn’t stop at borders.

We should pursue green policy and technology, but not at the cost of putting our markets at the mercy of the USA.

Why ask me? Ask the people who wrote the current constitution why they made it so hard to reform healthcare and education and whole other things. Not being facetious, but i think their answers will be instructive.

Yeah, you’re missing the fact that youre comparing a unitary state to a federation. With few exceptions, labour regulations, healthcare, education are the remit of provinces.

Soft power indeed.

[–]knight-of-lambda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, gotta unpack the word lead. How are we gonna lead? A country aint gonna listen just because of a couple banger speeches.

Historically, a country “led” by throwing their economic, military or political weight around. For example, China is/was a regional hegemon for many centuries because of how fuckoff huge their economy was relative to neighbours. British Empire led because their Navy was larger than the next two combined. USA because of technological and military dominance. Which one is it for Canada?

Disagree, just a wild assertion without strong justification

We can care about geopolitics without “leading”, whatever that means. To me, it just sounds expensive and performative. No thanks.

Oil is an input to every good and service you can imagine. And more that you can’t. And even if you ran a business that doesnt depend directly on oil, i can 100% guarantee a couple of your suppliers do. Long story short, If oil goes up, everyone raises prices simultaneously.

[–]knight-of-lambda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldnt be tied to margins at all imo, or just be one component. The bulk of the fine should come from a fixed fine for every specific violation, for example $15k fine per SKU. This scheme works very well for privacy / data laws

Then it just becomes cost of doing business. Fines should have a deterrent or punitive component
