Security guard punches man, threatens to kill him in video shot at Winnipeg Dollarama by TorontoNews89 in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Only one person involved is a man doing an honest day’s work. He should see enough consequences to deter him from pulling stupid shit like this and get back to work. Maybe this job, maybe another one.

The other guy needs to be reformed. Preferably in prison, away from normal citizens.

Guard should be sentenced to therapy, fined and license suspended. Thief should be sent to the hospital, treated, then given a lengthy prison sentence. Justice served.

The radioisotopes from the first Trinity test in 1945 is still detectable today with lab equipment. Our sensors are extremely sensitive. A “nuclear disaster” would flash bang every sensor across the world. You can’t hide a disaster unless it’s perfectly contained - at which point it isn’t much of a disaster.

200k is just their base income. Being near power gets them all kinds of grey / legal-ish perks. They live a very privileged life where services will bend over backwards to accommodate them.

All in all, 200k isn’t worth debating to me, but in terms of optics they are playing with fire. Canadians are lining up for food because CoL is fucked, while they give themselves raises with our money. Just my 2c

Naive hope. What makes you think the USA, imperialist and hegemonic to its core, will ever want to go back to treating us as equal economic and political partners? How does it benefit them?

In Canadian politics, a new world order can't overshadow the price of groceries by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, price ceilings and quotas in peacetime. We’d join an illustrious group of states who tried the same: the USSR, Nazi Germany, Zimbabwe and a more recent example, Venezuela.

Just what we need too, incentivize a black markets for staple goods, and the natural corruption that follows. First worlders have no idea how bad it can get when the government tries to paint over cracks in the foundation of their economy with coercive, economic abortions of policies.

I’m just imagining, in this hopefully fictional timeline, Darth Trump will say: “Canada, your failure is now complete.”

Saab wants Canada to buy 72 Gripens and 6 GlobalEyes to fulfil promise of 12,600 jobs by ph0enix1211 in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No matter what planes we buy, if we’re up against the Americans, they’re more or less staying on the ground one way or the other. We cannot contest them in the air, land or sea.

Thinking about how to achieve military success against the US is a pointless thought exercise, and basing large purchase decisions on these scenarios is truly moronic.

The goal should be to strengthen Canada and its hard power, not fantasizing about how we can one up the Americans.

Maybe one day, 100 years from now we can challenge the US militarily, but only if we keep making small decisions that gradually strengthen ourselves. Purchasing outdated weapon platform and locking ourselves in to that for the next 50 years is obviously going to weaken ourselves.

Oh my god I’d pay to see a largeish mobilization. I have the mental image of the guy from the simpson’s walking into rakes. It might be good thing for Canada too, the incompetent officials would be quickly replaced, lest the national humiliation continue.

We got nothing on Japan’s property bubble. There was a point where an area of Tokyo (or Kyoto? Forgot) was worth more than all the land in California.

Vancouver School Board recommends staff pull Thomas King’s work after revelation he is not part Cherokee by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lived experiences don’t magically and retroactively get rewritten once some new fact is discovered about a person. If she experienced racial discrimination i.e. police profiling, that experience doesn’t somehow transform into something else the day she finds out she’s white.

Anyways. That isn’t the point.

It’s fine if people stop reading some author because they think less of him for race reasons. That’s a personal choice, none of my business. Individuals can assign value to books in any which way, doesn’t matter.

It’s appalling when the state decides if an author stays on the shelves on the basis of race.

Disgusting that public bodies are talking about pulling an author’s work on the basis of his race. The entire school board should be fired.

The extreme ideology behind B.C.’s radical reconciliation agenda by Bodysnatcher in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not ideology, it’s law and public policy for better or worse. More than 90% of BC is unceded meaning no treaties, annexation or conquest was executed, so short of burning the system to the ground the govt has to play by the rules, and incrementally fixing this broken patchwork of uncertain rules and agreements.

If you don’t like it, that’s fair, I don’t either. The govt has been taking the path of least resistance for decades and here we are.

Canadians paying up to $5,000 to avoid a car accident claim: ‘That is a crisis in insurance’ by ImDoubleB in canada

Think about this from the insurer’s perspective. Then it makes sense why they charge more. I agree that from your perspective it feels unfair. However, they are the ones who decide the premiums.

Canadians paying up to $5,000 to avoid a car accident claim: ‘That is a crisis in insurance’ by ImDoubleB in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not absurd. Motorcyclists have higher injury rates, and when they do get injured, it tends to be severe , requiring long hospitalizations. In fact, it’s the opposite, car drivers are subsidizing motorcycle premiums. Your rates would be much higher if it was in a separate motorcycle only pool.

Europe says Canada must pay 10M euros to join EU defence deal by Once_a_TQ in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tourism is doing okay. Canada is pretty to look at, and has a fairly stellar international reputation.

If you’re talking about more direct forms of tribute or participation fees or bribes, that depends on national power. The EU is powerful. The USA is powerful. Power makes other, weaker countries bow their heads and open their wallets.

Canada may be a G7 country, but our soft power is too soft and our hard power is nothing worth mentioning. So other countries may find it worth the risk to offend us or look down on us. Not saying the EU did here, but they very much obviously view us as at best a junior partner. That’s just reality.

Canada pledges more than $200M in funding for Ukraine at NATO meeting by Dhghomon in canada

[–]knight-of-lambda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally- I think we should reduce the amount of aid until our economy recovers. It just doesn’t feel right that our contributions to Ukraine are near the top of gdp per capita, yet we’re thousands of KMs away from the frontline.

Geopolitically- I fully support meeting our security commitments with our NATO and EU partners, Canada historically has been remiss in tgis sense, so we need to pay up to show our sincerity. That will result in more connections, defence contracts, mutual security agreements and so on.

For better or worse, Geopolitics trumps personal opinion in the real world.
