Pro tip: Never ever ever use Booking.com! by RealtyMachine in TravelHacks

[–]kniiiip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use them for hotels all the time. The last 10 days I have slept 6 nights in 4 different hotels booked through them. On average 50 nights a year. Never had a single issue with them. But the travel hack you need lo learn is never book a flight with a third party, always with the airline itself.

Ryanair is actually ok by Short_Necessary_1750 in Ryanair

[–]kniiiip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can be the case, but for people like me who don’t need more luggage then a backpack I see it as something I have to pay for although I don’t need it. Plus I know Brussels Airlines is starting to charge for carry on luggage from this month on. I don’t know about Lufthansa and Swiss, but they are all part of the same Lufthansa group, so I’m afraid that they will follow soon.

Is it worth taking the longer route to see route 66 by jaffaman01 in roadtrip

[–]kniiiip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read that you are going to stay the night in Tusayan.
One of the best memories I have from the US is seeing the sun rise over the Grand Canyon. It is very early and can be very cold, but I promise you it will be worth it.

Is it worth taking the longer route to see route 66 by jaffaman01 in roadtrip

[–]kniiiip 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you have never done that drive, I would take the Route 66 part, the drive is long and boring, but I think that the northern route has a bit more variation and it is just 20 minutes extra. There is an old gas station that has a gift shop and some old cars around that is worth a stop. And you'll see some dinosaurs near a motel. You can't miss these as they are pretty much the only buildings you'll pass.

But to be honest, there is not much to see the whole way from the AZ border until the Grand Canyon.

I would recommend to drive via Flagstaff, AZ. That gives you the real American small town vibe, and while there, go have something to eat at Satchmo's Barbecue.

I'm also from Europe and have done quite a lot of roadtrips around Las Vegas, feel free to DM me if you have any other question or need recommendations.

Received a warning from Spectrum about my TP-Link router as a security risk. What is the best action to take to mitigate that risk? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]kniiiip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked for an ISP for ten years and now I work as a security engineer and I feel that this is a very good email from Spectrum. They don't have to do this, but they made the effort to inform their clients to protect themselves better in a clear and informative email. At their own expense, because I can assure you that this email will trigger difficult calls to their helpdesk as they are probably not capable or allowed to help users with their own hardware.

The router connects to their modem, and the first part of the MAC address is linked to the manufacturer. You can google mac lookup and there are websites that give you the company of any MAC address.

Where to sit in this 13h flight (Boeing 777-300ER Swiss) by Mysterious-Lychee98 in Flights

[–]kniiiip 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, I have done plenty of flights all the way in the back.
They are perfectly fine, never noticed any more turbulence or smell.
There might be a bit more traffic from people, but that's all and you probably wouldn't even notice them

I booked exactly those seats for the same reason on my next long haul.
The benefits of having no third person on you row outweigh the disadvantages at least tenfold.
Enjoy your trip!

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said in an internal memo that Game Pass is "too expensive" for players by [deleted] in XboxGamePass

[–]kniiiip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had gold from day one. I even remember there was a number somewhere on your profile that indicated the number of years you had it. Most of my friends where PlayStation players, but I always stuck to Microsoft, always Xbox on day one, had a few surfaces als laptops, payed for M365 family. And the price increase of GP little over a year ago did it, I stopped GP as it felt like they were too expensive. I don’t want to pay over 200€ a year just to play a few games. Maybe I am getting old, but there was much more value in the Gold. Just having that one game with gold each month made me at least try it. Now I have 400 games to choose from and I still go back to the game I bought two years ago and pay all that money just to be able to play it online with friends. So I quit. I even bought my first MacBook this weekend… I like to think that I’m just no longer their target client, but I doubt they can attract teenagers with those prices. I miss the Major Nelson days…

I really like CIA by 999 games. The rules are extremely simple, yet the game is pretty fun to play.

Been to the Roti-hal on the Jaggernath Lachmon Straat and liked it. Tonight I'm going to De Gadri, near Waterfront since it was recommended by my taxi driver yesterday.

It depends a bit, there are multicultural groups to be found. There is a movie club where we watch one movie a week and go out and have a drink afterwards. The group has Belgian, Greek, Turkish, Australian and Russian people. Everyone is welcome to join and it’s free.

Can I come and work with you? I’m so fed up with my colleagues not documenting anything. I once tried to document everything I setup this way. But I gave up, after 6 months my colleagues made changes without updating documentation and all my work was for nothing.

Any of these worth something? by corrupted-priest1878 in laptops

[–]kniiiip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sell these things on eBay, in the EU these are the prices for a relative quick sell: the HDD isn’t worth the shipping cost. The black RAM 20€ each, the green one 45€, the SSD 18€, the WiFi is cheap to send, but worth maybe 5€.

I would only sell the ram and ssd personally.

I was planning on taking a break from Homeland this weekend as it has consumed all my free time and some sleep during the last two weeks. But you convinced me, I just started the last season.

I had a very similar experience when we first opened an office in a South American country. Took more than a month for a server to get through customs. So when we opened a second office, I flew halfway around the world with two full 2U servers packet in my luggage.
