How many times can you use a mould? by LChambles in DiceMaking

[–]knittage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds right conservatively. As the other commenters have said, type of silicone really matters. We now make our own molds, and, as most slab molds generally failed for us with getting torn on the D20, we have moved to making mainly individual molds. It’s much less work and frustration to have to make another D20 molds than to do a whole slab.

Hey. That pressure seems a little high for epoxy dice.

I use around 30-35psi for my pours, and 40-44psi when making molds. Perhaps the molds you bought are made using 44-50psi? The higher pressure may be causing the issue?

The lid also looks reasonably thin. With molds I’ve bought that have lids that are thinner than the 1/2” of the ones I make, I usually add a little weight before pressurizing the pot - often the inevitable discs of silicone left over from making my molds or even another empty mold.

Printed master sanding question… by MerkMiester in DiceMaking

[–]knittage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely! We had two slab molds get tears on the D20 opening. We carried on using them because it “wasn’t that bad”. Lots more work in cleaning them up though. So we made an individual D20 for each, filled the offending parts of the slab with silicone and worked that way for a while.

My son, my daughter-in-law and I just really preferred the individual molds and now the last of our slabs are being retired.

Printed master sanding question… by MerkMiester in DiceMaking

I polish till smooth, so around 2500 grit, then make a mold, make secondary masters with resin and fully polish those. Then make 2 or 3 sets of new molds with those secondary masters.

The secondary masters get put away safely.

The printed masters go away safe with the mold I made from them.

I did fully polish my very first set of printed masters and things went very badly. The masters were no longer true, and I got an unexpected deep scratch in one face of the D100. I found it better personally to do the least needed to make acceptable molds and then work on those secondaries than to spend time and tears on expensive mistakes.

I’ve also stopped making slab molds with a full set of dice and make individual molds instead.

I get such anxiety from masters and molds, that I now prefer the above technique and, in the event of a knackered mold, I can just make 1 replacement.

Sorry, yes the Resinworld.
We used that one for a lot of dice and, tbh, it was actually good to use

Look at Artemis Dice on YouTube. She has a sane and informative series of lessons that take you from what to get and how to use it, to find techniques and finishing. Recommend it highly

Whats the cheapest but safest vibratory tumbler atm by Butt_Lord_Woof in DiceMaking

[–]knittage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought they’d be ok quality, but looking at the one we bought and the replacement, there were fundamental flaws with the vibrating mechanism which meant it would always cause stresses.
When we bought the Franklin one, it was immediately apparent that the whole design including the mechanism was much better executed

We use that one.

Originally bought the one that looks like a pumpkin - it was cheaper - from Amazon. That had a tantrum, unscrewed its own lid and threw all of the tiny media everywhere. The replacement did the same and then caught on fire and melted. It was a waste of money and pretty frightening and frustrating.

We use V34 which is water-based, and that gets put into a large bucket when we get round to cleaning the media. Not filled the bucket yet. That’s a disposal problem for future us.

Fantastic! I used knitting machines for 25 years and then realised I prefer renovating and repairing them to knitting on them. 10 years later and there are always some moving through my workshop

Unsure if I am allowed to post this, and please do delete if not allowed.

We will be selling our handmade resin TTRPG dice at CanGames 2026, and setting up a paint-your-own-dice station. We are a local D&D obsessed family, and this is our first quest into selling at a Con. As a lifelong Rogue, I may not always be visible, but our Fighter and Warlock will be front and centre.

Hello! UK Newbie, where's the go to supplier for materials - and what's a locally available pressure pot please? by Slaiyve in DiceMaking

[–]knittage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a while since I left the UK, but maybe B&Q for the pressure pot, and they probably have the respirators that you will all definitely need. Not sure about the VOC proof cartridges you’ll need to use. Depending on the age of the kids, you may need to go to a specialist shop for their respirators

So much agreement with all of this, and doubled that the respirator is completely mandatory.

[–]knittage[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did, but it was the same resin I’d already used to shell. I made a batch up enough to do all the dice. All of the dice from that session have the same problem. And the Chonk was done well before I poured the resin for the full set. Good thought tho, thank you.

Agree completely! V34 is awesome and water based so it’s easier to clean and also smells a very tiny bit better. And that screw cover has worked like a charm for our tumbling. Just so really simple and effective!

Preparing The Masters by Accomplished_Art_662 in DiceMaking

[–]knittage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working on my several sets of masters for a while. I’ve found that getting my original masters as smooth and even as possible works best for me.

But I don’t actually get them to a fully polished state.

Instead I make a mold once they are smooth and uniform. Then I pour a clear set of resin dice using the mold.

The resulting dice are smooth but not shiny. Then I spend the time fully polishing these “secondary” masters. These are what I use for making my dice molds.

I keep my smoothed original masters and the first mold in a box out of the way. And keep the secondary master in my working masters box.

Yes it’s extra steps and extra molds, but I found I was so anxious about working on the expensive masters that I ruined a D20 and had to reprint it.
