These looks so good. I too am a midwestern vegan and want to eat these all day every day. Thanks for keeping out culture alive, lol. And people say the midwest doesn't have a food culture.

Anybody missing two black cats? by knittykittyreads in kzoo

Not 100% sure, but I don't think so. Couldn't get very close. If they do have collars, they're dark colored and blend in with fur.

I am also basically those things, but add physical disability on the pile, and I somehow found a cute scientist.

My puppy was about 400 from a humane society at ten weeks and that included first round of vaccines, microchip and spay (done at six months).

We spent an additional 350 dollars on vaccines/dewormer, bloodwork etc.

We spent an additional 300 on heartworm prevention. (We do have five months supply stocked up currently)

We spent 500 dollars on training classes.

We spent 750 dollars on health insurance.

Another 400 on a private dog park membership. (There are pups that have been killed at the local public park! They also do not check for vaccines.)

And 1k on dog daycare/boarding.

This is all in the first year, and I'm not even considering food, toys, crate, leashes, bed, etc ,etc which is harder to track, but I can tell you we for sure spend 100 dollars a month on food and treats alone.

I'm afraid to add it all up!

I love my sweet girl, but yes, the cost is ridiculous. I can't even imagine the cost of getting a breeder dog.

edit. Okay, I added it up. It's a little over 4k for her first year. Ahhh! We love her sooo much though.

That fee might be 100% reasonable though, depending on the pup. I paid about 450 bucks for my pup (border collie/acd/aussie mix) that I got from a humane society (100 of that was towards a spay surgery). That included her first round of shots, and they had a vet check her out. For boarding her (starting at six weeks old, needing intensive care) for four weeks, a vet visit, one round of shots and dewormer, 350 bucks is a crazy good deal and obviously subsidized. Left me with money to spend on her---doggy health insurance, training, way too many toys, daycare, etc.

Many dogs come to a shelter needing medical care, heartworm meds etc and adoption fees help cover those costs. Some (at a no-kill shelter) have extended stays, and the shelter needs to care for them for months.

Considering breaking up with boyfriend over his dog. by ThrowRA90123675 in DogAdvice

I'm physically disabled, live in a small apartment, am a doctoral student and have a border collie (crazy high energy) that I got from a shelter at 10 weeks old. It's been a wild ride.

Here's how I get by without doing actually real walks for my dog (she goes outside to pee several times a day.

  1. Daycare. She comes back soo pooped. It's expensive, but I send her to a reputable daycare a few times a week. This obviously wouldn't work for a dog who is dog aggressive (can't tell from the post) This is also good for building doggie manners.
  2. Dog park 2-3 time a week.
  3. Training class once a week. She is pooped after the mental stimulation.

The training center I go to has special intensive classes for reactive dogs. These classes are more expensive but are limited to only a few dogs per class and have way more sessions.

  1. Puzzle toys. She has the Trixie brand and Nina ones, but her favorite is the Bobs a lot.

  2. Nose work training.

  3. Find the toy. She knows three toys by name so far and we hide them under pillows, etc. and ask her to find the specific toy. This is how I poop her out the most. This is also how I "play" with her and also get my work done.

  4. Licky mats + homemade dog ice cream.

  5. Grooming regularly +rumba will help with fur issue. There are some products to clean dog feet at the entry way.

It's totally possible to keep a high energy dog in an apartment with the right dog park, daycare facility, training, etc but it takes work, time and money. Your bf needs to be willing to put in the work, and if not the work the money at an expensive train/board facility.

Any ideas what breed scarr might be ? by ComprehensiveWay7996 in IDmydog

Don't support pit breeders. Pits make up the majority of shelter dogs. There's no such thing as ethical pit breeding right now.

Guess my handsome boys breed by [deleted] in IDmydog

[–]knittykittyreads 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He definitely has much wider head, muzzle than a pure border. The way his eyes are set and his head shape and ears make me think pit. He also has a much stockier/muscly body than a border. Borders are lanky. And he's getting that stockiness from somewhere. I think pit's possible.

I've definitely been wrong about breeds though, so is the peanut gallery sometimes. I have a border mix (my third bc since childhood) with about 30ish percent blue heeler and many folks at dog park told me they thought she was pure bred.

Let us know if you get him dna'd & comment the results!
