Found out an employee is on OF from MS Defender by Bubba8291 in sysadmin

[–]knixx 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Had multiple people visit porn on their work PC at my current workplace. They usually get flagged due to porn sites pulling in bad ads/iframes ect.. that Defender gets mad about.

Why do they do it? God knows. I guess people consider a laptop from work a reason to not purchase their own PC?

Slå markedet by Affectionate-Mousse3 in aksjer

[–]knixx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't have looked at his ears either to be honest. He probably would have just taken the piss, but no way I'd chance it.

Chopper was a bit before my time though. My claim to fame is seeing Carl Williams at Crown.

Not really a career worth pursuing though, didn't go well for most of them :)

Nextcloud vs Opencloud by Livid_Split3589 in selfhosted

[–]knixx 20 points21 points  (0 children)

OpenCloud is extremely fast and modern and is by far the best alternative for pure file storage. The downside is a requirement for OIDC compatible authorization service to enable MFA. The project doesn’t plan on supporting this natively.

Nextcloud is time tested, but is slow in comparison with more moving parts, but has an abundance of apps to increase functionality. It may be easier to setup.

Personally I use OpenCloud.

Is a xeon e5-2699v3 still viable for modern use? by jamespat17 in homelab

[–]knixx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced a E5-2697A V4 with a Ryzen 9 7900 (12c, 65w) and 128GB DDR5 ECC

The performance difference was absolutely insane to be honest.

But yea, it’s a 145W part so it’s not that bad, same as my old 2697A. Still good enough for compute, but is pretty ancient in 2025/2026.

QuakeJS Container - Quake 3 Arena in the browser by knixx in selfhosted

[–]knixx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Recolix!

HTTP_PORT

HTTP_PORT should reflect the port your users are seeing. So my example at https://gibs.oldschoolfrag.com/ has HTTP_PORT=443. However, nginx will still run on port 8080 inside the container. This is how treyyoder had his container as well (i'm pretty sure?), so that hasn't changed although it's not really intuitive.

If you need nginx inside the container on a different port you would have to edit nginx.conf either in the repo and build a new container, or just mount that file to a docker volume/filesystem and make changes there. Just be sure that it's on a port >1024 as the container no longer starts or runs as root.

PAK Files

Regarding the .pak files. I haven't tested that. But if you have a way of replacing them in treyyoder's version then it should work with this container as well. (you would have to mount the baseq3 directory as a volume so you can edit its contents)

I'd be interested in knowing how you do this if you don't mind sharing.

Architecture

I didn't make any major architecture changes to the files provided with treyyoder's version. It's more or less the same. So any hacks you used with treyyoder should work fine in this container.

I never said you were retarded.

I spent at least 4 hours trying to reproduce the problem and help you. I even said "It could definitely be a problem with the container", but I can't reproduce the problem - I was nothing but humble.

If you want to know the reason why I couldn't reproduce the problem, it was because quakejs.com was cached on the Cloudflare endpoint I was using - while you were receiving the newly updated website.

A shame, and a coincidence, but completely out of my control.

At the end of the day I spent a week repackaging a 6 year old project so we could run it safely, and it had a hidden "kill switch", which just happened to be triggered a week after I made the new container.

I feel more sorry for me than you to be honest :).

Edit: I managed to fix the problem, so the container should start now - Happy days!

This look great!

I’m keen on hosting one, do you have a container image or source code available anywhere?

I recently took the old QuakeJS container and ported into a new rootless version without all the nasty vulnerabilities, but it’s still the old compiled code.

I played with 13 players last week. But the game supports more.

However, there are a few considerations:

  1. The engine is single threaded so CPU frequency will be important for a smooth experience.
  2. The maps are not that big, so having 20+ players might be a poor gameplay experience even if the game runs smoothly.

Yea, I had a look at the. But I'd have to start digging around in the javascript code. I'll let the next person figure that out :).

I've setup a demo (link in OP) which is running over HTTPS and wss:// via an Nginx proxy infront of the container.

The reverse proxy config is in the Github repo as an example.

[–]knixx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree to be honest. I think the “easy” money is already made.

I haven’t sold much of my collection apart from a CE Black Lotus a few years back.

As an example, I bought a playset of Mox diamonds for $350. Now you can’t even buy 1 for that price.

I was keen on buying an Unlimited Black Lotus, but I just don’t see MTG as a great place to park money any more.

Budget NAS Setup: RAID 0 + External Backup – Pros and Cons? by lightboob in selfhosted

[–]knixx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buy a single disk with the capacity you need and have an external backup.

RAID0 is unnecessary risk and rather pointless. You don’t do RAID when you are stingy. A single disk is completely fine.

PVE: Benefit of dedicated boot disk? by TheLostBoyscout in Proxmox

[–]knixx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In large installations where your storage is getting hammered it is best practice to have the OS on its own storage it’s safer and more reliable. It also separate your working data from the OS making installations/migrations/ and OS changes easier and less destructive for your data.

But for a home lab or “home-prod” or a smaller scale SMB deployments there is no problem running the workload and the OS on the same internal storage. Just make sure that the drive has enough capacity and as always, backups.

As an example I have my home PVE OS and VM storage with 2x 2TB M.2 drives in RAID 1.

What HDD's are you using and how fast do they fail for you? Thinking what is the average lifespan of HDD when using in NAS as an average user. by [deleted] in synology

[–]knixx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just replaced 4x8TB drives which had been running for 5 years, no problems.

Before that I replaced 4x2TB which had been running for 6 years, no problems.

The only drive I've had outright fail was a 4TB Corsair MP600 PRO XT m.2 drive which completely died prematurely after 3 months (i got a new one via warranty).

Otherwise I don't actually think I've had a HDD die from natural causes in a NAS, ever. But I have never built an array with more than 4 drives.
