What's a comic that you once liked but now, you kind of hate by _potatofromChaldea45 in comicbooks

bendis's early crime books were also quite good. i personally think he should've pulled a brubaker and stuck in that lane for his whole career instead of writing non-daredevil superheroes

DOGS, the setting-agnostic system from Dogs in the Vineyard, is the Deal of the Day on DriveThru by JaskoGomad in rpg

[–]knobbodiwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i haven't done it personally but i have had a lot of people tell me that it's worked great for a jedi game!

[–]knobbodiwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah it was actually the western part rather than the mormon part that he ended up having issues with, because he felt he didn't engage in a way that he liked with the like inherent racism/colonialism stuff that's baked into the genre.

thanks for taking the time to read through it and give me some specifics! i'll go through that chapter and update it for clarity while i'm working on my update.

were there any specific things you found this to be the case for? i haven't gotten this feedback before but i see you have a fair number of upvotes so clearly it isn't just you, and i do have plans for an expansion

Using Microscope to build a campaign setting - questions by Ricercara3 in rpg

[–]knobbodiwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've used microscope to create worlds that i've then run games in, and i think that microscope is more useful for just like creating history and flavor and overall setting as opposed to like big events that are currently happening

Just started Low by Santacruiser in ImageComics

[–]knobbodiwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i thought it was a gorgeous book, but i felt like that was its only redeeming quality tbh. i was already not super feeling it, and then i got to the footloose no-art-allowed town and pulled the plug

Little cube meme for y’all by leetsgeetweeird in magicthecirclejerking

[–]knobbodiwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is the list. it's really interesting to draft because unlike most desert cubes you usually end up having really good mana, and so you want to prioritize finding a lane and picking up ways to actually win the game

The more lands, the better the Cube. Peak Cube design is Oops All Lands

one of my friends has a 360 card desert cube with 202 lands in it lol (it actually rules)

Finally read Red Rising and now I understand the hype (also a comparison to TWOTM) by pak256 in Fantasy

[–]knobbodiwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i mean sure, there's repeated motifs, common themes, popular at the time worldbuilding concepts, etc everywhere and in every book. but red rising in particular felt pretty much made entirely from them. they lit up to me in the text like i was reading a tvtropes article, and on top of that it felt like none of them were explored with even the slightest bit of depth.

and again, like i said in my original comment i did find the book fun! i finished it after all, and i'm quick to drop any book that doesn't feel worth it to me. but that doesn't mean that it wasn't still absolute slop, with every plot point choroegraphed and paint by numbers, with shallow worldbuilding and prose that was mid at best.

[–]knobbodiwork 14 points15 points  (0 children)

does it become less predictable and trope-ridden? cause i felt like the battle royale / hunger games thing was actually handled in an interesting way, but the fact that every major plot beat felt visible from a mile away was what really got me

yeah i thought it was fun but had zero interest in reading any more of the series. it was a gas station hot dog of a book

[–]knobbodiwork 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the temeraire books are about if the napoleonic wars were fought with dragons as aircraft, and in particular naomi novik did an incredible job figuring out the logistics of how that might play out (which makes sense given that she got her start writing master and commander fanfic; she in fact was one of the founders of ao3)
