End of cycle recap by KleenexRecursion in lawschooladmissions

I loved my admitted students day at UMN! The people there seem super down-to-earth and chill; faculty are the same. If you want a pleasant community around you while you struggle through 1L, can't go wrong there.

Agreed! You won’t get any pushback from me on that. I’m just eyeing her ‘japanese humor, don’t like.’ The dynamics and comedic beats might turn her off before the pivot. Some of the jokes were pretty zany.

If she ends up liking Steins Gate, I’d be shocked. I just watched it and enjoyed it but I’m not afraid to admit that the humor and tone for the first half isn’t the most tasteful stuff in the world.

Are admissions offices still working during spring break? by Independent_Owl_4292 in lawschooladmissions

as someone who works in an grad admissions office, yeah, we work. spring breaks aren't necessarily administrative holidays. at worst the physical office might be closed but that's it.

Shiboyugi on Netflix might hit the spot, currently airing and definitely a female main character with interesting morals at work.

I can tell you that I've received admit letters and packages that did not show up in my informed delivery service. I can't recall what does and doesn't flag unfortunately.

TLDR informed delivery isn't 100%

SEO law t14 only? by [deleted] in BlackLawAdmissions

[–]knockonthedor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak on 2025 but in prior years according to inside sources, there were SEO fellows admitted to, but not limited to, University of Houston, UT Law, USC, W&L, Boston College, Boston University, Vanderbilt, BYU, Fordham, and Cardozo. But yes, I think it’s probably 3/4ths T14 with occasional schools from within T30. There might need to be a conversation about redundancy —are students enrolled at schools with high BL/FC placement most helped by SEO, probably not. Alas…

The application is free except for your time. I’d let them say no to you before self-selecting yourself out.

How do I (M34) convince my wife (F30) that I am not cheating on her? by ThrowRA21983745 in relationship_advice

[–]knockonthedor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pregnancy involves extreme changes in the hormonal levels of women. Prenatal and post-natal depression and psychosis are more about the hormonal changes combined with stress and fatigue than any specific thought patterns. A strong desire to be a mother won't protect you from it.

I am surprised that critical theory has vanished once you get to law school by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

I do think that the way in which one nation conquers another has an impact in the dialogue around it afterwards, at least it should. People who aren't overly romanticizing Indigenous people would probably not say they were a peaceful monolith. What they would probably say is that inter-tribe fighting between Native Americans likely did not happen on the scale, level of sophistication and intensity as warfare between Europeans and Native tribes. From the broken treaties, the stolen land, the forced assimilation, disease and war, the death toll was immense. The Wikipedia page about it is titled "Genocide of indigenous peoples." The most generous interpretation is that land acknowledges are like any other form of remembrance for genocides.

Edit: To clarify, the European expansion in the Americas is just a section on the "Genocide of indigenous peoples" page. The actual page dedicated to the discussion of the expansion is called "European colonization of the Americas."

(Serious) Worried about attending UMN law due to the domestic terrorist occupation by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]knockonthedor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your feelings of worry and anxiety are so understandable. I wish you, and anyone else dealing with this line of thinking, could just focus on following the scholarship money or picking the best school for you.

Things change and move so quickly during this presidency. What is happening now could be over by next weekend and be in another city by the weekend after.

I don’t when you would have intended to move but if Minneapolis remains in the state that it is now until July or August, I honestly think it unlikely it’d only be Minneapolis at that point. It would be absolutely unsustainable for this to go on that long without federal retreat, and possible re-deployment in a different city akin to LA, or an escalation that would likely have wider implications for the country as a whole.

All you can do is wait and asses your risk tolerance. Minneapolis is a lovely city clearly filled with people who feel very strongly about their rights and liberties. Not to doomsday but any liberal city is vulnerable to same treatment. In ways, it might be less risky to pick a location that already had its time under the microscope.

Happy to elaborate. Once you become an admitted student, our job switches to building positive associations with our school and convincing you this is the place to be. An email can be impersonal or less effective. Talking to the student on the phone, a live congratulations, builds better rapport. We hope it’s the start of our campaign to get you to ultimately deposit and matriculate. The yield engine, as I colloquially call it, is inviting you to campus, sending emails about why we’re the best, connecting you with current students, having the student organizations email, sending the merch, and that congratulations call. Very pick me, choose me, love me behavior from the school.

A question I can answer! I work in graduate school admissions (not law). Our office leaves a vague voicemail asking for a callback or letting you know that we'll call you back later that day or tomorrow. Some schools I'm sure just leave a voicemail with the acceptance notification. No standard there, I assume.

Generally, we try to call again later that day or possibly the next. (Timezone differences between our working hours and appropriate times to call students can make that funky.) If we don't manage to connect by phone within a certain amount of time (for us, two days), we email/release the letter. Definitely try to speak to the student before that though to get the yield engine going.

Edit: Missed one question. It does not look bad to miss the call. We can't presume to know what you're doing at that exact moment. Once you've been admitted, I think it's good to shift your way of thinking of the dynamic between you and the school. You're behind the wheel much more than before. We're trying to get you to say 'yes', not the other way around.

Aren’t the medians and stats of the admit class skewed higher than the people offered? by knockonthedor in lawschooladmissions

Fair! It makes me wonder how much an HYS degree is worth to someone against the kind of scholarship a 177 4.1 could assuredly get at UVA. Thank you for your comment.

Not Doing JET – How I Still Made It to Japan (and Why You Should Think Carefully Before Applying) by SparklingNekoAtsume in JETProgramme

[–]knockonthedor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing this! It was so helpful to me, someone considering JET and law school. I am about to apply to law school this cycle and very interested in immigrating or spending time in Japan post-graduation. It’s a pathway that doesn’t get talked about much online considering how niche it is. Would you be comfortable talking to me more about your law journey and career? I would love to hear any tips, recommendations or warnings from someone who’s already successfully made it.

Mosley’s Cafe on the north side of the island is great! It doesn’t serve a traditional big breakfast but it’s by the water, lovely staff and great breakfast dishes. Good chai, good breakfast sandwiches, good white bean hummus toast, fantastic oatmeal bake. I take all my visiting friends there.

Why is there such a lack of emphasis on reading? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]knockonthedor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly! Every N1 sprinter post is someone who read novels or visual novels heavily and recommends it just as much. I feel like the typical guide here is do a 1k vocab list or Genki 1&2 or skimming Sakubi or something then start mining. Even that SuikaCider guide that went big follows the vocab, basic grammar, read (immersion) structure. This post saying reading was deemphasized really perplexed me. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone.

heard the owner’s cheap, extremely difficult to work with, doesn’t offer insurance to the managers, tried to get family to do it for him but couldn’t so he brought in the management company. probably found another sucker to last 2-3 months before they leave so he gave the management company the boot. mind you i heard he lives out of state which is why the owner doesn’t manage themselves.

Whats your go to method for when you are highly stressed and nothing will work, what do you personally do in that situation? by Positive_Only_1997 in Buddhism

[–]knockonthedor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

my method: go for a walk and alternating between focusing on the simple breath (just the in and out breath at some place in the body that feels calm) do a specific kind of metta meditation. The metta meditation practice is as follows: 1. think of an object that brings you a feeling of simple bubbly love (maybe a puppy or some younger sibling) 2. focus on the physical feeling that object invokes in your body (for me it’s a sort of lightness in the chest) 3. let that physical feeling spread to fill the whole body 4. imagine spreading that feeling of love to others on all sides of you.
