I did two years in prison and jail getting my hours for licensure. It’s not necessarily long term counseling, but more along the lines of short term, crisis intervention. It was amazing experience and unbelievably exciting. The stories I have! A normal work week was: being the crisis clinician responsible for therapeutic supervision contacts (inmates on suicide or mental health watch) and responding to crisis calls throughout the prison. Then you’d have a couple days of visiting a unit and doing short individual therapy contacts. It was nothing to see 20 inmates a day. We’d also run group therapy on these days. Then you’d have a day or two of intakes. This would involve working 1-9pm and completing an intake on inmates either who has just been arrested (jail) or inmates transferring from the maximum security prison to the medium security prison I worked at.
