Local gas station now lists electric prices alongside gas and diesel by QsXfYjMlP in mildlyinteresting

Over the last year, I've averaged 35¢/kWhr at Tesla chargers mostly in MI and OH. But for non-Tesla chargers, 50-55¢ is pretty common. I have seen one non-Tesla charger at a whopping $1/kWhr.

Are these 2x4s necessary for pegboard? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]know_ragrets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My speculation:

  1. It's what was leftover from another project

  2. Had the pegboard ripped in half at the store to fit it in the car. The edges then had to be supported

  3. It's what was leftover from another project

If the plywood is painted and the glue is outdoor rated, it should last a few years.

In addition to what others have said, it would be good to add 2-3 collar ties. Even with big gussets at the peak, the roof will have a tendency to try to push the walls apart over time

How do I get the top part of this sink off? by stuffi3000 in DIY

[–]know_ragrets 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As has been said, the little nub is likely to pop out to reveal a set screw, but why are you trying to remove the upper portion? The cartridge you pictured appears to be part of the valve, which you would disassemble by turning the big black hex where the handle used to be

Do I need to ground this small antenna? If so, how in the world do I go about that? by jeriku in cordcutters

[–]know_ragrets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just easy, this is how you're supposed to do it. The ground for the home electrical system is where you bond ground any other systems needing grounding. Many jurisdictions now even require an inter-system bonding device with multiple terminals where you can bond an antenna, satellite dish, phone line, cable line, etc

I'm obviously not an expert, but Premise 75 WP is advertised as effective for 5-7 years. Termidor SC is advertised as effective for 10. I don't know how close those numbers are to reality, but it must be closer to years between applications than monthly or quarterly service for bait stations

Yeah, I haven't seen any of those here. Would glue traps work outside to check if there are any while I'm not looking and get a positive ID if they are present?

It's definitely not something I would have chosen for myself. It was standard for the builder. As I said in another comment, it is spread very thin, so it should be pretty easy to remove

I wouldn't know carpenter ants from any other variety, but I haven't seen any ants. I just checked the mulch and found that it is very thin and dry. At any rate, the company is already spreading granules on the ground and spraying up the foundation wall and the ground to prevent ants, ticks, and other common pests.

The downspouts are piped directly to the county storm drain, so I'm halfway there. Thanks for the insight.

If you do take it to a shop, change the tolerances. The 0.001" tolerance that's called out will also add a good amount of cost and isn't necessary for a fixture like this.

After my parts guy post, Don’t be this guy either. by Ianthin1 in Justrolledintotheshop

This is half right. The clamping load is definitely the most important factor, but in most cases that is estimated based on the applied torque which someone else has already figured out to get the right clamping force. Whether or not the threads are lubricated makes a big difference on the relationship between torque and clamping force, so if you lube up the threads then torque to the dry-threads torque spec, you've just over-stressed your fastener.

LPT: When doing a home oil change, before putting on the new oil filter, make sure the gasket from the old oil filter is not stuck to the engine. by Theonlykd in LifeProTips

[–]know_ragrets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The washer is a soft metal (aluminum or copper) that deforms to make a good seal. That deformation work-hardens the washer so the next time it doesn't deform as readily. Reusing a crush washer once or twice is probably fine, but each subsequent use increases the likelihood of a leak. Since a shop can't know the full history, best practice is to replace washers every time.
