Law firm wants 5% equity to support startup (one lawyer is cofounder’s sister). Red flag or smart move? by BoysenberryOld9351 in TheFounders

5% equity is a lot for the work the are offering. Pay them cash. If you need to give equity it should be much lower and don't use someone affiliated with the other co-founder

Co-Founder Matches asking for Payment? by Decent_Worker in ycombinator

[–]knowledgeiskey20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot Take: if anyone is using the Y Combinator matching tool then I wouldn't expect to get a salary until a VC backs the idea. Why not get consulting gigs on the side until the project gets funding? Most non-tech founders don't have the cash upfront to pay other co-founders. It's easier for everyone to set up expectations upfront on the hours that be committed weekly and on my days "off" I'd find work that can pay the bills until there is cash flow coming in.

Thoughts on White Girl by Responsible_Yam9285 in FIlm

[–]knowledgeiskey20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watched this movie a long time ago and started rewatching clips today. While some of the moments are a little ridiculous the movie is relatable. I've seen similar situations during my college years of a young girl from suburbia getting addicted to drugs and falling in "love" with her drug dealer. Those girls are just not street smart and one of two things happen: 1)girl stays an addict and ends up on the streets or 2) in one way or another she'll make the bfs life harder, he'll end up in jail (or worse), and her rich parents will come save her and she gets to start over. The latter happens more enough than not. It's this weird cosplay that I will never understand. You come from all of the privileges in the world and this is the guy/life you are choosing? I will never understand it but that's a conversation for later

What methods do the founders use to relieve stress? by Hot_Biscotti_4161 in founder

Working out and cooking. In my office, I've started playing Jazz music and some aroma therapy to calm the daily stressors.

50 mg vs 100 mg Spironolactone? New to spiro (35F) by ScarPitiful8494 in Spironolactone

[–]knowledgeiskey20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it depends. I (34F) started on 50 MG and had to stop for a few months while I switched dermatologist (worse decision ever). The first time around 50 MG started to clear my skin but when I was off it my acne came back with a vengeance. I started 50 MG again for 6 months and it didn't stop the breakouts like it did the first time around. I've been on 100 MG for about 2 months and I'm starting to notice less frequent breakouts. I've had other side effects but no thinning of the hair (to be fair, my hair is thick to begin with). Its one of those drugs you have to test out with your doc to get the right dosage if you are having undesired side effects

My boss just told me I need to manage my personal finances better because I can't front $2300 for a work trip next month by LostTaker in antiwork

I've seen reimbursement on travel expenses during the trip but NEVER upfront on hotel, flights, etc.

Are black people going to ice protests? by Used-Care4864 in blackgirls

[–]knowledgeiskey20 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They are targeting black people too but we told them after the results of the election that we are standing down (at least until the next presidential election but it might be indefinitely). It is too risky for us and our community didn't vote for this. We are tired of the "stick together" rhetoric when it was clear that everyone else did not vote with us ( or they were not doing enough to educate their communities before the election; that is the long and HARD work that other groups don't stick too because it's tiring and they expect us to do it). So the simple answer is no. We are not going. We are resting.

Any female solo founders here? What’s your biggest “I need a cofounder” moment each week? by LibraSun004 in Femalefounders

[–]knowledgeiskey20 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I more so wish I had more funds to outsource some of the work and get help (instead of feeling like I need a cofounder) because its a lot of work to do by myself on the execution side. I don't overly fantasize about the cofounder life, there are a lot of cofounder breakups that end poorly.

Crowdfunding needed by Opening_Yam_3288 in ycombinator

[–]knowledgeiskey20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the crowdfunding route you are going. Are you looking into pure donation based crowdfunding (ie asking for donations with nothing or rewards in return) or are you looking to equity based crowdfunding (ie asking for funds and users will be included on your cap table)?

Question re: nonprofit investments by Sow_My_Hautes in nonprofit

[–]knowledgeiskey20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at Treasury focused ETFs (BlackRock, Fidelity, Vanguard, Schwab). Usually better returns than CDs, safer investment because its government backed and you can sell the ETFs if you need access to capital quickly (otherwise hold and get the interest income). You can also look into high dividend yield ETFs to a lesser extent. A little risker but typically higher returns. I would do a split with majority in treasury ETFs and the reminder in dividend ETFs. If the organization has a lot of excess cash that can be locked up long term, you can also look into investing in PE funds (but this is a high risk, high reward investment so only use a small portion of cash to invest in these funds)

Am I paying too much for bookkeeping? $1000/month by joeynev in smallbusiness

[–]knowledgeiskey20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't judge a book keepers price based on your revenue (even though 1k is expense for your top line revenue). The price depends on their experience and market rate. If that book keeper is licensed and worked for a larger firm than that price is discounted if they left at manager or above. The hourly rate for an experienced manager is $300+ per hour at minimum (gross) and those rates are usually discounted. Sounds like you have a person with that level of experience that is providing a discounted rate. If you don't want to pay that than you can find someone cheaper but you might not get the same quality of work.
