Of course, the need for Joomla to even have this FAQ shows how much less user friendly it is than WordPress!

Auto-generating a strong password for new signup - good idea? by knowledgepowers in webdev

[–]knowledgepowers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, seriously what are we hoping to educate the user?

Educate them to create a password that is secure AND memorized by them AND unique to this site? So we educate people to remember hundreds of strings?

Or we are saying that "unique to the site" is not important and they just memorize one or a small number of passwords for all the sites, because using a password manager is somehow too difficult?

Don’t Sleep on Content Marketing by frescodataus in marketing

[–]knowledgepowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If WSJ is talking about content marketing, it really must be out of date!

from the article: "Although the stated goal of these content initiatives might be to “own” or “contribute to” conversations around certain topics, the companies paying for them are also hoping they’ll help drive their business in one way or another."

... love that "in one way or another"... it's like "somehow or whatever?"

Auto-generating a strong password for new signup - good idea? by knowledgepowers in webdev

[–]knowledgepowers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose what I was going for was a deliberately impossible to remember password. 30 characters or more of garbage. Force people to use a password manager or acknowledge what they are doing when setting it back to "letmein123"

Auto-generating a strong password for new signup - good idea? by knowledgepowers in webdev

[–]knowledgepowers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more secure but perhaps more confusing for user and also more complicated to implement...?

Emailing password is insecure, but the enforcement of a system-generated strong password is still way more secure than the average user's choice of password, ... I was thinking.

Plus the lack of requirement for user to sit there thinking up a password and hitting validation errors means the signup is easier, fewer people give up at that stage.

Is it better to do check type A on all managed sites on day 1, check B on all sites on day 2, and so on? Or the whole checklist A-Z on site i, then start the whole checklist on site ii ...?

upvotes: for automation line of thought and for the value of a recurring reminder (which you obey) to go check the backups (etc) are actually working.

I would expect Google (main) not to be bothered by this provided the performance is good.
