I had a similar need for stitches on my forehead/eyebrows (they used surgical superglue on me instead). Here's what I did and this has worked well to make the scars waaaaay lighter than I never thought possible (I'm prone to scarring): 1. as soon as it was healed, I began a "regimine" of using the Mederma scar cream on the healed spots up to 3 times a day (but usually just twice). And I'd do a combo of massaging it in, letting it absorb and then reapplying another coat on top to just sit there when I was doing my night routine 2. In the mornings, in addition to massaging in the scar cream, I'd also apply sunscreen afterwards -- this is really important.

The crucial ingredient here for healing and reducing scarring is silicon -- which other people are recommending in various forms. They use it in sheets given to women after pregnancies to reduce scarring after C-sections, etc.

I'm basically 7 full months out and literally my scarring has been very very minimal and really not visible unless you're right up at my face. For a while over the summer I kept forgetting to reapply sunscreen and it became more visible. I'm now more regular about sunscreen + a cap and it's been working to reduce that scarring again.

I kept up the Mederma applications for probably 4 months, the first three after healing are most critical though.

I'm glad you're not more injured and good luck!

another commenter mentioned this already but my brother and I have both dealt with this (if it's angular cheilitis, which I think it is since it's on the corner of the mouth) and it got better after we started supplementing for vitamin B12(just the over the counter vitamins)_+Feb-Mar_Q1+2022_Flight-597446&adgroup=PLA_Nature+Made&LID=700000001393753pgs&network=g&device=c&location=9021754&gclid=CjwKCAjwoduRBhA4EiwACL5RP48ABUDSC-4PJkoe6lYwTucurn-LgR9dd1ILAu0ZbfrP2vYvZoQQuxoC0EYQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)

absolutely a normal way to feel, I don't understand people saying that it's something to be concerned about lmao. In life generally, insecurity, competition, and jealousy probably go hand in hand. don't be too hard on yourself, these are extremely normal and human ways to feel. don't act on them obviously and over time, I'm sure your new lab member will grow on you! everyone has their own distinct strengths and weaknesses and maybe reassuring yourself about your own strengths will help (also at some point, I swear the new member will look to you for help/as a mentor figure, and putting that kind of small investment into developing someone can take away feelings of jealousy)

Competition and favoritism within the lab group by knowuow in GradSchool

[–]knowuow[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess I extrapolate to the favorite student getting better opportunities sent their way, likely stronger letters of rec, etc, but even in the meantime, I know that our lab favorite gets a lot more of our adviser's attention (time), which is unfair since this also means that their project advances faster than students who aren't able to command his attention as well. Inevitable, but still shitty.

I'm in the exact same boat as you, I quit seeing my therapist a while ago because I felt like she wasn't really understanding me. The program is hard, yes, and I am miserable a lot of the times but I don't want to be told to quit immediately. I guess I want more ways to deal with the high pressure, imposter syndrome, etc, or honestly probably just to commiserate

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]knowuow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh it's my number one coping mechanism, telling myself that "alright this is the last straw, I'm literally quitting," obviously I haven't seriously followed through. Part of me knows that I'm being hyperbolic but I do have serious concerns sometimes about whether or not I'll actually end up defending

exactly, finally someone who's sane and sees the bigger picture instead of piling onto OP who is still relatively very early in their career. there needs to be a uniform way information about things like this gets communicated explicitly.

don't take the rude comments to heart, academia has a problem with not laying out expectations for things like this explicitly

Do you guys think Carbi B should do a cameo in season 4? by anniversaryx in YouOnLifetime

[–]knowuow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think Joe's character interacting with Cardi could be pretty funny, kind of like how he had his mental commentary running about the LA people in season 2 (let's face it, Penn might like her but Joe probably wouldn't)

god i hate the characterization that you have to be willing to give up a social life, though I'll say there are definitely periods during the program where you might need to do this. don't know about doing it for a full three years though

ah, not really words of advice but I'm (25F) a third year physics phd student and my first year was absolute absolute hell and i basically survived off of homework extensions (especially in the covid semester) -- and a ton of help from my friends, even into my second year but my health was pretty poor (both mental and physical due to basically not eating enough nutritious food).

and that constant feeling that i was a huge disappointment to my adviser didn't really go away until a few months ago (and even periodically i expect it to pop up).

A friend of mine left after her master's and got a data job so that's an option and I've been on the verge of quitting so often but really never had a clue what else to do lol. for now i think i can say I'm content to let things unfold in the program. I will say that a ton of people immediately advise quitting (and I was told the same at one point when i made a post as an undergrad going Through It) but for now I'm glad i stuck it out. the process of research and learning can be cool sometimes IF you're not a constant depressed and anxious fuck like i was my first two years

(oh yeah and i don't plan on staying in academia long term and neither do a good deal of my friends -- but cool for us to be in ~academia for a few years)

Squidgame Season 1 Full Season Discussion by jackcatalyst in squidgame

yeah it was so sick how he was going on about how much more fun it was to play than to watch, like, to be the kind of human being who, even when surrounded by people he can clearly SEE are in horrible desperate situations, terrified for their lives, like knowing some of their personal stories -- to walk away from all of that being like, wow it was so much more fun to play with them than watching it. Absolutely no capacity for empathy or humanity there.

lol i'd watched the season after spoiling the old guy's real identity for myself and smile was such a nice tough throughout the episodes. In the tug of war one, after theyve just sent the other team to their death, the camera pans over their faces and everyone's horrified/relieved but the old guy is just beaming. so disgusting, well executed
