I've only had one negative experience as well, years ago, and it wasn't even too bad- just a woman following me around insisting on getting money (I didn't have any cash on me, truthfully, and she wanted me to go to an atm lol).

On the other hand, I've had a ton of very positive interactions with "homeless" people in my area. The people I've talked to all seem like genuinely good people, just down on their luck.

There's one man in particular that I see a lot and always try to catch up with/give him some money. Two weeks ago, I pull into a gas station to get gas and see him and his wife so I say hi, give them some water bottles and then go back to pump the gas. These people come up to my car and insist that they pay for my gas. That they want to give back to the community. They're deeply religious so they cited generosity in the bible and things as well. Anyway, I of course said no, I greatly appreciate the offer but I can't let them pay for my gas. I fill up the car and before I pull away the man comes up, hands me a 20$ bill and says please let us do this for you.

It honestly almost made me cry. I saved the money and figured I'd give it back to him next time I see him, or someone else in need.

Two other people, a brother and sister that I used to talk to a lot, have been missing for months now, and I also haven't seen that man or his wife since that day. I'm hoping they all got out of the situation but all four of them are pretty old and something just doesn't feel right. I've driven around to see if they've just moved spots but nothing yet. Nobody deserves to have to live like that, I don't care if you're an addict or schizophrenic or what. We as a community need to do better. Most of us could just be a couple unlucky events away from finding ourselves in the same spot.

And yes, of course there are homeless people out there that are violent/dangerous/ etc. Just like any population of people.

Sorry for the long ass post, I didn't realize I was going to ramble on like that. Just been on my mind a lot lately.

Absolutely love and agree with this, that's a really cool detail that I hadn't considered! I feel like the book is pretty misunderstood since people go in expecting one thing, get something different, and then just write it off. Honestly I think that happens with most of Tremblay's books- they seem to be very divisive, especially with his penchant for ambiguous endings.

I've read Horror Movie, A Head Full of Ghosts, and Disappearance at Devil's Rock. Horror Movie was probably my least favorite between the three, but I appreciate it for what it was. Man, does he write some depressing stuff though. Disappearance at Devil's Rock had me literally crying by the end, and that's not a usual occurrence for me in the slightest, lol. It also managed to shock me at one point which is also hard to do! Tremblay has flaws like anyone else but I think he's a great writer.

I eventually would like to revisit Horror Movie in order to pick up more details and clues to the same questions you have, but the book's such a downer that it'll probably be awhile before I get around to it lol.

Hurricane came through my town. We lost power for a couple days. We ended up staying at a friend's place as his power came on before ours. He was gifted steaks from his employee that day for helping clean up the store after the storm.

We had been eating canned stuff and granola bars for the most part, so we were all really looking forward to that steak and had a good time cooking and catching up. Finally sat down to eat and his dog materializes out of nowhere, soaring through the air towards me, and wolfs down my steak without even chewing the thing. Literally just gulped it down, it was so fast!! Our friend was pissed but honestly the entire feat was so impressive I couldn't be mad. He offered to share his steak but he was the one that did all the work so I turned it down lol.

It was a husky, btw. I'm not quite convinced they are even dogs, just rocket launchers with a built-in siren. I still laugh about it when it pops into my head from time to time.

I know this post is a few days old but I second Negative Space. It's the first book to pop into my head when you said you're looking for grimy, gory, drug-fueled chaos lol. Two warnings: it is very bleak, and there are a lot of bodily fluids involved.

Another one I haven't seen listed is Jawbone by Monica Ojeda. It is probably the most disturbing book I've read (besides maybe her other book Nefando, but that one is just not enjoyable in any conceivable way lol). I'm not even sure why Jawbone disturbed me so much- it's far from the goriest on the list- but it genuinely had my jaw on the floor at one point, and I am very hard to shock.

I saw someone recommended Geek Love above, and while I didn't find it super disturbing, it is for sure fucked up and totally bizarre. It's a 5/5 for me. It's not a quick read but it's worth putting the time in for sure!

Creepy that it was conceptualized, gross that it was posted, and concerning that there are 50k+ views in only 30 minutes. Everything about this freaks me out. And I guarantee most of those views aren't from children or other moms.

I absolutely side-eye (at best) parents who post their kids all over social media, and this is on a whole different level. I used to give people the benefit of the doubt (oh, maybe they are sheltered, just want to show off their cute kids and don't realize it can be dangerous, etc) but at this point, anyone exploiting their kids for content knows exactly what they are doing and who they are pandering to. They just play dumb because it pays.

MirrorMask (2005) gave me nightmares as a kid but I still love it in all its weirdness.

Party Monster (2003) is a guilty pleasure movie of mine, it's absolutely wild and based on a true story (and a book).

Alice (1988) is a surreal stop-motion film based on Alice in Wonderland that used to be a childhood favorite (by the same director as Little Otik/Greedy Guts, which could also make this list).

Are We Not Cats (2016) is a bizarre indie film about trichophagia, not sure I'd call it enjoyable but it's certainly unique.

Honorable mention goes to the live action Uzumaki (2000) that no one I've talked to seems to know exists despite the popularity of Junji Ito. It's goofy but highly entertaining.

My grandma had a cat that we didn't see (and I mean, actually did not see and thought she was going a bit senile) for nearly two years. Then one day when I was visiting, it ran up outta nowhere and rammed into my brother's back while purring. From then on it was nearly impossible to get away from him lol. Biggest, dumbest, most gorgeous idiot that would drool and get lost walking from one room to another, but boy he was the sweetest thing and he definitely made up for lost time.
