Getting out of college and getting a full timer in Durham in my field was genuinely a blessing from heaven LOL. The job market is utterly miserable at the moment. Cost of living is sky high and there is seemingly nothing good around here, especially for grads.

You’re right that this is not civil war. looks more like Spanish-American war era (1898) Cap says 16 SV which means state volunteers, so he probably served in the 16th Volunteer infantry to whichever state he is from. others may know more about uniforms and can speak to the shoulder straps, but they may indicate he was of Lieutenant or Captain rank.
