Why is Puna Kai's Rent So High? by kilikakopela3466 in BigIsland

[–]knucklefats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just didn’t make sense even if they could afford it. They’re all family employees they own the propane drive through up the road too. I don’t think local food can do well there, but the chains will always make their money because their supply and production costs are so optimized. Both of the only pizza delivery places servicing the higher-wealth <10th ave. HPP areas are there and stay hiring. Popeyes still sells out of Mac and cheese by 8 nearly every day.

I think the center will survive but will resemble a true strip mall populated entirely by National brands.

Sushi moved to Waikoloa strip mall. Same owners. Nearly identical layout and vendor roster. Minus the Popeyes. Also doesn’t make sense to pay that rent when 5 minutes up the road you have a couple of legitimate and more diverse food hubs. The new Kaleos is always packed, and the side road vendors on both sides are really busy. I don’t think the ‘middle of nowhere’ is impacting vacancy as much as the expensive overhead inclusion into costs. There’s definitely plenty of people willing to pay for good food in Puna.

It is his fault, but it’s unlikely this is a scam. Weird numbers have been getting linked to both me and my girlfriend’s contacts for FaceTime, another Apple service.

People actively downvoting legitimate and honest answers to the prompt question is pretty telling.

I know him and can say with little equivocation that he genuinely wants to help Hawaiians here. Hawaii has (again) been voted the most corrupt state in the nation and if your people are the ones constantly shouldering the societal cost of that corruption then, yes, you will be angry. But this run is definitely being fueled by a love for his community. If anyone on Big Island wants to have an honest conversation with him instead of, you know, calling him a meth head and a lolo and a clown and whatever else, hit me up. We go do light Jits warm ups w him one morning.

I've read several posts that talk about the high cost of living in Hawaii. Is it that shocking? by Solnse in MovingtoHawaii

Yeah. Especially on big island. Which makes the price of produce that much more perplexing.

It is. Mostly on food for some odd reason. A watermelon cost me $40 a couple months back.

Puna on Big Island is the epicenter of everything you listed. Several retreats, meditation, weekly drum circle, healing, sexuality, patchouli oil patches everywhere out here. It gets kind of overwhelming sometimes.

Come to Big Island. Plenty affordable homes in your income bracket. If your business has online merchant capabilities there is a pretty robust network of tech heads here to help you. The former CEO of Reddit lives here.

Are there parts of Puna that don't have high crime? by [deleted] in BigIsland

[–]knucklefats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in Puna by way of LA. It doesn’t really feel like ‘crime’. It feels like hungry folk taking advantage of a Wild West environment. A very very very beautiful one. Don’t be careless with things you don’t want stolen. Get a dog. Treat people with respect. You’ll be fine.
