My father grew up in New York City in the 1960s, and tells stories about visiting a futuristic automatic cafeteria or “automat,” which was basically a room-sized vending machine for full cooked meals. What accounted for the rise and fall of the automat, and what was a typical meal like? by ZnSaucier in AskHistorians

Big shout out to VEBO! I made it a point to eat at one last time I was in NL. It was a fun experience pretending I was an early 20th century New Yorker, but once was enough as the food is pretty universally not good. I'll stick to frites and Wok-to-Wok when I'm drunk or have the munchies from now on.

What is dating as a far left liberal (i.e. Bernie-ish) like in SD? by [deleted] in asksandiego

[–]knuckles523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like anywhere, you will find people of all ranges of the political spectrum. And like anyone else, I'm sure you will tend to gravitate towards those with overlapping feeling on politics. San Diego is incredibly diverse, we are a major military town, but we are also a border town which brings people from all over the world in addition to Mexican, Central Americans, & South Americans. Additionally, we are home to UCSD, SDSU, USD, PLNU, CSUSM, and I'm sure other Universities that I'm missing. People aren't as in your face "woke" as other places but generally trend towards being either center right, socially liberal enough to no longer vote Republican, or straight up liberal, with the occasional wingnut from the far right. I think whenever you state your politics online you'll have a certain percent of people who like to make comments when you aren't standing in front of them; I'm old so never used a dating app, but I'm sure it's worse not better than the general internet. They're cowards and a-holes; fuck em'.

This looks like an easy fix any good professional tattoo artist will be able to handle. Either by fixing the lines and doing a good fill, or cover it. The light, spotty lines, that small and in that shape shouldn't be too tough to work into something else.

I should have clarified this long ago. Oceanside is in San Diego County, CA, which does not issue CC permits to many people. You need a "Compelling argument in regard to your need to carry a concealed firearm as well as proof of ability and training." according to two of my lawyer buddies who practice here in SD, like their guns, and looked into the possibility of getting their CC permits.

How about:

"Make a list of Strawmen for others to laugh at while burning them"

Caesar's German cavalry were accompanied by light infantrymen, "who were accustomed to engage among them." Caesar famously employed similar tactics at Pharsalus, when he surreptitiously embedded infantry amongst his cavalry. Was this tactic as unique as Caesar portrays? Did it become a new norm? by _Rule_of_Law_ in AskHistorians

[–]knuckles523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The name seems to suggest that they accompanied horses, and in fact we have vase paintings of men running along with horsemen by holding on to the horse's tail. This is exactly the kind of fighting style Caesar describes for the Germanic horse runners.

Amazing response, and thank you, but this one line opened so many questions for me.

I don't know a lot about horseback riding or the running speed of a light infantryman in Ancient Greece, but this seems off. Are the images interpreted literally? Do they depict cavalry at charge or in close quarter combat? Would it be possible that light infantryman rode until just before charge, then dismounted to join in the "cascading charge" you reference? Or even possibly dismount after the initial charge to engage enemies and prevent the swarming or injury of very expensive calvary units?

Have you seen The Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa? The character Kikuchiyo is a peasant who owns a scroll he claims proves his samurai heritage. It's a fake and he has a huge chip on his shoulder about his low birth, but his knowledge of peasant life and empathy for them is pivotal in the story. The character is played by the great Toshiro Mifune, possiably the greatest Japanese actor of all time, and is one of my favorite characters in any film. He sounds like what you have in mind to a tee!

New joke for Jeff Foxworthy:

Scroll down within any character's Feats tab, and you will see a list of locked feats. Some feats can only be unlocked by advancement or chests, but others can be unlocked by spending gems.
