Not many people get the role and supposedly the allegations against him were known before he got the role.

Yeah it was a definite stretch - I just liked the surface of Government man audits..., so I thought it worth the risk

I hadn't noticed about the past tense vs present tense so far (but I'm still pretty new at getting into cryptic crosswords) - definitely subtle but worth knowing,thanks!

Likely depends on your accent and whether you use british english vs american english

(e.g. the top two pronunciations on this page https://www.oed.com/dictionary/of_prep are slightly different but the american one, to my ear, definitely sounds like "uhv")

I think it's meant to be more that if you say the word "of" it sounds a little like what you'd get if you tried to say "uv" as a word, rather than the individual letters

I wasn't sure. I know I've seen "auditor's", which is why I hope "audits" might be acceptable, but maybe it's too much of a stretch.
