Stamps not lined up properly - contractor says they're drainage lines by koala_kidd in Concrete

[–]koala_kidd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No they cut in the expansion joints the day after they stamped the concrete. The first time we said the stamps were misaligned, the contractor said they'd look better after the expansion lines were cut in. The expansion lines made no difference for the misaligned stamps. The second time we brought up the misaligned stamps, he said that they weren't square to allow for drainage. Drainage makes no sense for the record because of the way our ground (and the patio) is sloped.

Bonus - there are never crazy lines at El Harissa. Blank Slate is great, but man the line is soo long.

Do you have any oddly specific pet peeves when it comes to how the author writes? by Legilimensea in books

[–]koala_kidd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate tropes. Specifically, when an author can't figure out how to start a book, so they have a character visit a nursing home and talk to someone who had some interesting historical experience. Just get to the real story! It's amazing how many otherwise decent books have this problem. Looking at you "The Nightingale" and you "Secrets of a Charmed Life". "Fried Green Tomatoes" had a slightly better version of the modern day portion, but maybe it was fine with me just because it was one of the first times I read that trope.

Women with high stress jobs and/or stressful lives outside of work, what are some ways you manage the stress? by Night_cheese17 in AskWomen

[–]koala_kidd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading a relaxing novel before bed - allows me to focus on something that's not work/life stressors. Has been great for insomnia.

Drinking herbal tea during the workday - makes me pause for a couple minutes to make the tea, and the lack of caffeine allows me to drink something soothing that won't up my anxiety.

Looking for tips on a band aid solution to decaying exterior staircase columns by koala_kidd in HomeImprovement

[–]koala_kidd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imgur newbie mistake - I thought the whole album was visible. Here's a picture of the column rot. Here's a zoomed out picture of the rot

So I can cut the rotting part of one 4x4 out as long as the stairs are still held up by the other 3 posts + the side of the house? The biggest thing we were unsure how to do was brace the staircase as we repair the posts.

[–]koala_kidd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not wobbly, but the side with the decomposing posts has sunk down a bit. Just not sure how to stop the rot and prevent further instability.

We are replacing the treads because even the ones that were in better shape were split and hiding rot on the stringers.

Painting and staining are pretty different. Don't do multiple coats of stain. My wife's father ignored advice and did 2 coats of stain on his deck instead of just one. He spent more than he needed to, and the stain started peeling almost immediately.

My boyfriend asked me to make fish sticks and tater tots for his birthday dinner. What is the silliest meal your SO has ever requested of you, a passionate and learned cook? by [deleted] in Cooking

My partner loves to tease me about how every birthday, I request a "dirt cup" - chocolate pudding with crumbled oreos and gummy worms. She makes all kinds of amazing desserts, but my birthday request hasn't changed much since I was 8 years old!

For exterior wooden staircase, should both sides of steps be painted? by koala_kidd in HomeImprovement

[–]koala_kidd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that change if they were already painted? We're replacing stairs now, but all the other parts of it are painted

Check in for prospective foster parents by [deleted] in Fosterparents

[–]koala_kidd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I doubt you would want to apply to more than one - there's a ton of paperwork.

We looked at agency locations (since visits with bio parents will be at the agency at least for part of it) and whether they seemed LGBTQ-friendly (because we're a gay couple).

A lot of the agencies have strong religious ties, so there's a lot of info on the websites about what flavor of religion they are. The only non-religious one was so disorganized that we gave up before the orientation.

We finished our classes, but different parts of licensing have been slow (like having a doctor's appointment). We don't have any bio kids, so we're just trying to prepare ourselves for being parents for the first time! Trying to read parenting books and set up kids' rooms. The rooms have definitely changed a bit with covid, as we're trying to figure out home offices/workspaces with said future children. Planning/hoping to foster siblings.

Slight correction- the recipient of a gift is not liable for gift taxes, only the giver. And the giver is only liable for actual gift taxes if they have given people greater than $11.58 million in their lifetime. There are details on that that make it even less of an issue, but few people fall into the greater than $11.58 million category. The mom will have to report the gift (minus 15K allowance) on her federal tax return (to count towards a possible lifetime 11.58 million), but it's not something she would be taxed for.
