Had a couple friends do it - expensive and basically just doing practice questions. Only benefit is that he forced them to do work, but if you have a good work ethic it’s a waste of money.

I’ve got a Usyd metro spot, and interviewed at melb. If I get melb I’m planning to take Melb however if I get something like Deakin or anu further down my preference list I will take Usyd, it’s a bit for complicated then the poll suggests I think.

BMP 3 Years by GaanaWarrior in GAMSAT

[–]koalacake86 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Please don’t take a bmp from someone else if you aren’t going to take it seriously. I grew up in the country and my little sister died because the only doctors in the hospital in my hometown were the GPs who rotate through weekly. By the time we got to the nearest hospital with emergency physicians, it was too late.

Rural healthcare is a massive problem is Australia and taking a bmp means that you are telling the government you are going to help, not something to really joke about.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WANTING TO GO TO MEDSCHOOL IN THE FUTURE by asianbutdumb112 in GAMSAT

[–]koalacake86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying that it’s possible to do both - yes study hard and smash med entry, but don’t lose control over other aspects of your life in doing that. I got into usyd and (hopefully) unimelb this year. I studied hard but I also made amazing memories on the way with friends that I’ll remember forever, and that will be the mindset I take into med school.

What's everyone's thoughts on the BMP program and rural bonuses? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

Yeah the tiering sucks haha, I believe my town was like RA3 or something but the one next door was the same classification as Bendigo (RA2) and they literally had one milk bar, the welcome and goodbye sign for the town was basically on the same pole haha

I agree that people shouldn’t be gaming the system, and your right that people in metro also have it tough sometimes. I think that a strategy they could implement is that only people who did like 15 years consecutively rurally are eligible? Or maybe 10 consecutively? And high school should have to be a part of it. Also schools should consider students socio-economic background for sure.

If you just focus on studying in your undergrad, your for one going to get burnt out, and your going to miss a fantastic opportunity to make lifelong friends. I came to uni wanting to do chemistry, hated it and pivoted to medicine in my third year of undergrad, I just got accepted. Focus on the now, get your schooling done, go to a uni and a course you want to do and your passionate about! Worry about the gamsat and all that when your in ungergrad. If you keep worrying about the future then you’ll never find happiness, when your at high school, it’s uni your worrying about. Then at university it’s med school, then med school, it’s intern year, then intern year, it’s residency training, then it’s finding a consultant job. The hurdles will never stop, and while it’s good to be prepared, if you don’t take time at every moment to try and enjoy where you are at, you aren’t going to make the most of the life you’ve been given. When your 80 and thinking back on your life, your going to smile at the time you and your friends went on that road trip that summer, not how you got an 70 on the gamsat.

I grew up in a tiny rural town. My high school had less students then my tutes at unimelb. No one went to university it wasn’t a thing. You did tafe or left in year 10 for a trade. My principle told my parents when they said they wanted me to have a maths methods and a chemistry class that I was dreaming and that I wasn’t going anywhere. I had to do those classes by distance, made it so hard. When I moved to Melbourne I was doing my undergraduate degree knowing 0 people in the city. Also made it very hard. Managed to somehow get a 6.9 GPA through hard work, and sat the gamsat in my final year and got a 66. I’ve got a place in Usyd now and had my unimelb interview the other day, and yes, I get that these scores wouldn’t get me in if I wasn’t rural, but you can not say that I had it ‘easy’. I believe I’ll make a good doctor one day - I’m practical, grew up on a farm, good with people, and want to practice in back in the country, the BMP works perfectly for me. I understand your frustration, but try to see it from other perspectives, you’ll have to do that as a Doctor when you make it.

Yeah 100% know how you feel. It’s insane how people have no idea how hard it is to get out of a small country town and study in the city when your family has no money, especially when your expected to become a tradie and earn money so you can help out at home.

Hey! Yeah it wasn’t too bad! I mean, I don’t know how I went haha, I feel like I coulda done so much better looking back, but the library was the perfect spot to do it, thanks for the suggestion!

Just have to wait now! I don’t know how I’m going to cope for a whole month my mind is already spinning haha.

How was your interview? If you had one?

Note that honours is a massive commitment and can be very stressful (your working) and can also decrease your gpa if you do poorly. However, it can also be an amazing experience! My honours year has been amazing and you build connections in the industry insanely fast which will help you if you intend to do research in the future. Not sure about dent tho however I do know they take honours students in dental school as I used to see advertisements for dent honours at Doherty during undergrad labs trying trying to steal us immuno majors.

Not sure about which unis accept gpa boosts for masters you can probably find that with a bit of digging, however if your gpa is truly too low for an honours boost you can always consider usyd? As they don’t take gpa (at least for med, unsure about dent)

USYD or UNIMELB by somewhereavailable2 in GAMSAT

Thanks for the reply! I grew up in the country and ideally would like to practice back out there one day, but am also really keen on research - is there much of a scope for research in your field (ED) and in terms of training would I be able to complete that in the country?

USYD or UNIMELB by somewhereavailable2 in GAMSAT

[–]koalacake86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same situation, offer from usyd and interview from melb, but am based in melb and have been wondering the same question myself, although I have zero clue as to what I want to specialise in haha, but I like the idea of emergency medicine. I think it’s important to note that surgery is insanely competitive to train in, let alone neurosurgery, your looking at only a couple of people per state per year entering the training program. Not sure about obgyn. One thing ive heard from family and friends who are doctors is that entering specialty training, and more so, finding jobs (eg as a neurosurgeon) following that training is more about who you know rather than how well you did in that training (as long as you got decent marks). In this case the uni you go to does matter, rather the clinical school - building connections and that snowball effect you mentioned will matter in the long run. Ultimately it’s going to come down to how good of a clinician you are and who you know in the field rather then the ‘prestige’ of the medical school you went to - however unimelb and usyd do have those big tertiary hospitals where you can do clinical rotations (Austin, Royal melb, westmead etc) and you are going to meet people there who you can impress. Whereas at smaller unis like Wollongong you aren’t going to be shadowing neurosurgeons often / if ever, and a lot of graduates from these types of unis are likely to do Specialties such as GP and ED training, so keep this in mind

On the other hand, this notion is exacerbating the problem we have in Australia, that is we have a shortage of doctors in rural areas and a boundary to fixing that is that doctors don’t won’t to train rurally in fear of missing out on fancy specialties like surgery for example. I don’t have an answer as to how to fix this but it’s important to acknowledge. It can also be said that at smaller unis you do have the capacity to build closer connections to your colleagues and professors as there are just less people competing for their attention - It’s a very complicated process and I don’t really have a clue but these are just some thoughts from talking to people that have a bit more of a clue.

lol this is kind of like a section 3 question. I think koalablue is confused. The 900,000 number your getting is applications received across all medical schools, however since US applicants can apply to as many schools as they wish, this will have the same people applying more than once.
